-
- Precisely. While it would be *nice* to have TDD be modern and advanced,
- the fact of the matter is that the majority of equipment was donated,
- starting many years ago. Which is why TDD tends to be 300 baud modems
- with Baudot code (aka Murray code. NOT ASCII) teletypes, or equivalents.
- Old teletype (telex) equipment such as ASR or KSR 15s are available by the
- thousands, and are virtually indestructable, and are easy to repair.
-
- While Baudot is slow (47.5 baud comes to mind) and rather restrictive
- (no lower case), it's sufficient for the needs of most.
-
- When a member of the deaf community is interested, on the other hand, with
- computing or electronic communications (as opposed to a simple telephone
- replacement) then it makes sense for something more grandiose than a KSR15
- and 300 baud modem. But in order to talk to others, or the standardized
- access provided by TDD service, they still need the compatibility with the
- old stuff.
-
- [When I donated my KSR15, I wasn't even able to obtain a charitable donation
- slip - my contact person said that Revenue Canada had determined that the value
- of such equipment was zero.]
