  11. Could any phone/modem gurus give me an idea of just how different
  12. phone network characteristics are worldwide with regard to modem
  13. compatibility and safety?

  15. And how really different are modems approved for different countries?

  17. Are the differences simply to satisfy bureaucrats, or do they affect
  18. how the modems operate in a significant way?

  20. I am really in the dark about all this, and I find it a handicap in
  21. negotiations with a particular modem manufacturer who says my troubles
  22. stem from using a U.S. model in Japan.
