- I am running SuperStor version 1.3 on a 12 MHz 286 under MS-DOS 5.0 and
- 4DOS 4.01 to compress a 38 Mbyte partition of a 40 Mbyte hard drive. The
- SuperStor partition crashes every few days by giving me the following
- message on booting up (paraphrased, sorry):
- SuperStor drive d: disk structure error -- mounting readonly
- attached
-
- Sometimes I can delete a few files and be able to write to d: again, but
- usually I have to delete the SuperStor partition and restore all the data.
- Also, sometimes filenames become corrupted in the crash, but sometimes they
- do not.
-
- It is somewhat mysterious to me why this is happening. I was running
- SuperStor on the same drive with different partitioning up to a few weeks
- ago and encountered no problems except that a number of sectors at the end
- of the drive were marked 'bad.' To try to fix this, I reformatted the
- drive using MSDOS5.0 (it had previously been formatted with 3.3, I believe)
- and repartitioned. Formerly (i.e. when SuperStor was working), the drive
- was partitioned with 32Mbytes in C: (about 1 Mbyte of this was in an
- uncompressed partition E:) and 8Mbytes in D: .
-
- I talked with my brother about this problem and he suggested that I inquire
- about it here. He also suggested that one of the following might be the
- problem:
- 1. The drive was formatted using MSDOS5.0, which could be incompatible with
- this version of SuperStor.
- 2. I am not running DR-DOS.
-
- Some ideas I had (which may be ridiculous -- I'm grasping at straws here):
- 1. The 38 Mbyte partition is perhaps too large for SStor to handle well.
- 2. I started using some of the DOSNIX utilities recently; maybe some of
- them are incompatible with SStor.
- 3. I upgraded from 4DOS4.00 to 4.01 at about this time as well.

- Any suggestions would be appreciated, even if they involve recommending
- another disk compression program. I hear that MSDOS6.0 will include its
- own disk compression program -- does anyone have any information on its
- quality or when it will be available?
-
-
- Thanks--
