  42. This is a dump of the X server binary that I work with.
  43. It corresponds to MIT pl 14 + X386-1.2E-1.0.1 patches.
  44. This is NOT the very newest stuff you can get (pl16/1.0.2).
  45.  
  46. I just put this out because there was a request for a newer
  47. X than 1.1 and X 2.0 seems to take some time...
  48.  
  49. So, before you get this, think twice! This is *NOT* intended
  50. to be a 'release' and is not 'official' in any sense. I will
  51. also not support this, I'll probably switch to the official
  52. X 2.0 when orst releases it.
  53.  
  54. The server is linked shared with an old version of gcc-2.2.2d;
  55. the libs are included, but I still is not a nice thing.
  56. If you have a version of /lib/libc.2.2.2d, you will have to
  57. replace that with the included one, BUT ANY BINARIES LINKED
  58. WITH YOUR COPY OF /lib/libc.2.2.2d WILL BREAK.
  59. This is not a problem if you have the official release of
  60. gcc-2.2.2d, since the libs are now called /lib/libc.so.*.

  62. The server was compiled with '-O6 -fomit-frame-pointer -m486'
  63. but should work on any 386 as well. All extensions except
  64. PEX are compiled in. That is SHAPE, MULTIBUF, compressed font
  65. and Type1 font support. Compressed font support means that you
  66. can just 'compress -v *.pcf' in your font directory; this
  67. saves a lot of disk space, but it also takes longer to load a 
  68. font--doesn't matter for me, 'cause I got a fast machine.
  69. You need to make a new font dir with the included mkfontdir.

  71. I have used this server for some weeks now and it seems to be
  72. OK; I just noticed that sometimes it grows to some MB and never
  73. shrinks again. I guess that this is due to some clients not
  74. deallocating resources (pixmaps or whatever, I don't know too
  75. much about the inner workings of the server) before they exit.

  77. The server works fine for me, but your mileage may vary :-)

  79. I strongly recommend that you get the color xterm from rutgers.edu
  80. and set the 'xterm*noScroll: true' resource--it makes such a big
  81. difference. Also, you should really get olvwm.
  82. Take these three things together (new server, xterm, olvwm) and
  83. you have a really nice and fast environment.

  85. I used freeze instead of compress on the tar file because it makes
  86. it much smaller (544K vs. 752K, ~ 30% smaller). The binary is
  87. freeze_Linux and requires /lib/libc.2.2.2. See the lemacs
  88. (Lucid GNU Emacs 19.2) README.
