  19.         EXCITING NEWS!  There is now a project which will motivate
  20. students to solve open-ended math word problems and use modems to
  21. write their solutions.  MATHMAGIC is a project which accomplishes
  22. this as well as bring students from around the world together in a
  23. collaborative effort.
  24.         Working from each individual school (site), students team
  25. with groups from other sites to solve problems which have been
  26. posted by MATHMAGIC.  These problems are discussed and solved
  27. through communications between teams.  After working the problems,
  28. MATHMAGIC teams submit one solution format which requires that
  29. they state the problem, discuss the various strategies, and
  30. explain the solution.
  31.         Once solution formats are received, evaluators examine the
  32. final submission.  Teams are not ranked, but achievement is
  33. recognized.  The results are posted on the MATHMAGIC board and in
  34. a newsletter published by MATHMAGIC headquarters on a six-week
  35. basis.
  36.         This project provides an answer to the common problems
  37. math teachers around the world encounter.  It provides the
  38. motivation for students to write and solve word problems in math.
  39. In addition,  students develop needed skills in the use of a
  40. computer and modem while expanding their world through
  41. communication with other students.
