- Call for Papers
- IAAI-93
-
- The Fifth Annual Conference on Innovative Applications
- of Artificial Intelligence will be held July 11-16, 1993,
- in Washington, D.C. The conference, collocated with
- AAAI-93, is sponsored by the American Association for
- Artificial Intelligence. IAAI-93's purpose is to showcase
- and promote AI applications of the highest caliber. The
- conference will highlight approximately twenty
- applications that represent the most innovative deployed
- AI applications world-wide.
- In addition to these case studies, IAAI will include
- "meet the author" sessions allowing people to talk
- directly with the award-winning authors, and AI-on-
- Line, a series of panels which focus on the critical
- issues involved in successfully deploying AI applications.
- Focusing directly on business uses of AI, IAAI is
- complementary to the National Conference on Artificial
- Intelligence which emphasizes AI research results.
- IAAI-93 format will include IAAI plenary sessions,
- meet the author sessions and the AI-on-Line panels.
- Program Chair
- Philip Klahr, Inference Corporation
- Program Cochair
- Elizabeth Byrnes, Banker's Trust Company
-
- Requirements for Submission
- Papers must describe deployed applications with
- measurable benefits. We encourage authors to submit
- papers describing deployed applications that highlight
- any area of AI technology. Papers should be 10-15 pages
- in length, plus figures.
-
- Timetable
- Submit five (5) clearly legible complete copies of papers
- (hard copies only-we cannot accept computer files) to
- the AAAI office by January 15, 1993. Papers received
- after this date will be returned unopened. Notification of
- receipt will be mailed to the first author (or designated
- author) soon after receipt. All inquiries regarding lost
- papers must be made by January 22, 1993.
- Papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee on
- February 20, 1993. Notification of acceptance or
- rejection will be mailed to the first author (or
- designated author) by February 26, 1993. Final paper
- version is due on April 2, 1993.
-
- Content
- Papers should cover the following topics:
-
- Task or Problem Description
- Describe the task the application performs or the
- problem it solves. State clearly the objectives of the
- application. Explain why an AI solution was important for
- this application. If other solutions were tried and failed,
- outline these solutions and the reasons for their failure.
-
- Application Description
- Describe the application. Give technical details about
- design and implementation. State what AI technology is
- used, why this technology was chosen, and why more
- traditional approaches are inadequate. What key aspects
- of AI technology enabled the application to succeed?
- If applicable, describe how AI technology is integrated
- with other technology. If an AI shell or product is used,
- explain the decision criteria used to select it. Describe
- any insights you may have gained about the application of
- AI technology.
- Explain what makes this application unique and why
- you consider it innovative. Does it demonstrate a new
- technology? Apply an existing technology to a new
- domain? Apply an old technology to an old domain in an
- innovative way? Demonstrate a novel integration of
- different technologies?
-
- Application Use and Payoff
- State how long the application has been deployed. Explain
- how widely the application is being used, how often it is
- used, and by whom.
- Describe the application's payoff. What measurable
- benefits have resulted from its use? What additional
- benefits do you expect over time?
- Quantify the benefits (e.g. in terms of financial return
- or time saved or earned).
-
- Application Development & Deployment
- Describe the development process. How long did
- application development take? How many developers
- were involved? What was the cost of development and
- how was this cost justified?
- Explain how the application was validated before
- deployment.
- Describe the deployment process. How long did
- deployment take? What was involved in deployment (e.g.
- transfer to a new hardware platform, reimplementation
- with a different shell, development and delivery of a
- user training program, distribution to geographically
- distant sites)?
- Quantify the costs of development and deployment (e.g.
- in terms of money or person-years).
-
- Maintenance
- Describe your experience with and plans for maintenance
- of the application. Who maintains the knowledge base
- (e.g. original developers, domain specialists, less-
- experienced maintainers)? How often is update needed?
- Is knowledge in this domain expected to change over
- time? How does the design of the applications facilitate
- update? Have you automated knowledge-base update in
- any way?
-
- Presentation
- The authors of each successful submission will have
- forty (40) minutes to present the application at the
- conference. We encourage presenters to employ audio-
- visual media (such as videotape or live computer
- projection) to demonstrate their applications.
-
- Publication
- Successful authors will receive the Annual Innovative
- Applications Award and will be highlighted in a
- subsequent issue of AI Magazine.
- The proceedings on the conference will be published as
- a book, Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence
- 5. Authors will be required to transfer copyrights of
- their papers to AAAI.
