  15. What is Crime Stoppers?

  17. Crime Stoppers is the most effective law enforcement program to come 
  18. along in twenty-five years.
  19.  
  20. The program is based on the simple principle that for every crime 
  21. committed someone other than the criminal has information that would 
  22. solve it.

  24. Crime Stoppers relieves the fear of involvement or retaliation by 
  25. offering anonymity, and reduces apathy by offering a reward.

  27. How Does it Work?

  29. Crime Stoppers encourages people to call with information to solve crimes 
  30. already committed, those about to occur, and/or the whereabouts of wanted
  31. persons.  The identity of the informant is never known.

  33. Cash Reward

  35. All persons offering information are eligible for a cash reward, also 
  36. paid anonymously.  The rewards run from $50.00 to $1000.00 depending upon 
  37. the weight of the information.

  39. Unlike other reward programs which stipulate 'arrest and conviction', 
  40. Crime Stoppers pays upon arrest only.  The waiting time for the pay-out 
  41. is drastically reduced.  The reward is passed on, at a pre-arranged 
  42. location.

  44. Anonymity Guaranteed

  46. When the informant calls the direct line for Crime Stoppers they will be 
  47. assigned a special code number which will identify them in all future 
  48. dealings.  The call will not be traced nor recorded.  No one will know 
  49. who the informant is!

  51. How is Crime Stoppers Organized?

  53. Crime Stoppers is a non-profit program relying on co-operation between 
  54. the police force, news media and the citizens of our community.

  56. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors which establishes 
  57. and administers policies.  It raises funds, determines methods and amount 
  58. of payments and oversees the program.

  60. How is Crime Stoppers Funded?

  62. The reward funds are not tax dollars.  Instead, monies are raised from 
  63. the private sector by members of the Board.  Since Crime Stoppers is 
  64. incorporated as a charitable organization, all donations are tax-exempt.

  66. Is Crime Stoppers Successful?

  68. Crime Stoppers Incorporated began in New Mexico in 1976.  Today there are 
  69. more than 900 programs throughout the world.

  71. Since 1980, more than 2 billion dollars in stolen property and narcotics 
  72. has been recovered and Crime Stoppers' tips have led to more than 80,000 
  73. convictions.

  75. In Canada, Crime Stoppers has helped to solve more than 67,000 cases 
  76. since 1982 and has recovered almost 75 million dollars in property and 39 
  77. million in narcotics.  More than 40,000 arrests have been made as a 
  78. result of the program.
