- Some time ago, while I was away, someone asked why a person with
- Bipolar Disorder would discontinue taking lithium. As I understand
- it, the lithium doesn't always even out the swings all the time.
- The lithium has to be monitored carefully for toxic effects and
- therepeutic level in the bloodstream, which can vary. When the
- patient moves into a somewhat manic phase despite taking the
- medication, he/she decides he/she doesn't need it anymore because
- of the great high and sense of well-being and acceptance. Once
- they stop taking it, of course, then the swings really become
- extreme.
- Some may discontinue because of the side effects, but that's a
- separate issue with almost all psychoactive drugs.
