  21. The medication of choice for manic depression is lithium.  Lithium is
  22. a form of salt which acts as a stabilizer of erratic emotions.  Science,
  23. as I understand it, has not yet explained why or how lithium works.

  25. If someone is suffering from manic depression, yet is primarily manic,
  26. I would predict that the feeling that lithium gives probably feels like
  27. a deadening of emotions in comparison to the normal state.  The contrast
  28. may also be found for someone on the other end of the spectrum.  If
  29. primarily depressive with infrequent manic episodes, the lithium may
  30. seems like an uplifter or an energizer, yet not stimulating.

  32. Stimulants are often subscribed in conjunction with lithium.  These should
  33. not produce a "dulling" sensation, quite the opposite.  Also, I think that
  34. there is a category of people who have been diagnosed as manic depressive
  35. who have acquired manic behavior in reaction to stimulant medications.
  36.  
  37. Not taking medication may be a form of escape or avoidance behavior.
  38. The side effects, as I understand it, can be unpleasant.
