- THE WAY I UNDERSTAND IT...
- The medication of choice for manic depression is lithium. Lithium is
- a form of salt which acts as a stabilizer of erratic emotions. Science,
- as I understand it, has not yet explained why or how lithium works.
-
- If someone is suffering from manic depression, yet is primarily manic,
- I would predict that the feeling that lithium gives probably feels like
- a deadening of emotions in comparison to the normal state. The contrast
- may also be found for someone on the other end of the spectrum. If
- primarily depressive with infrequent manic episodes, the lithium may
- seems like an uplifter or an energizer, yet not stimulating.
-
- Stimulants are often subscribed in conjunction with lithium. These should
- not produce a "dulling" sensation, quite the opposite. Also, I think that
- there is a category of people who have been diagnosed as manic depressive
- who have acquired manic behavior in reaction to stimulant medications.
-
- Not taking medication may be a form of escape or avoidance behavior.
- The side effects, as I understand it, can be unpleasant.
