- Here goes a real flame-elicitor:
-
- Speaking of tests with cultural bias--seems to me that if
- folks applying for programs in this country, where the Ivory Tower
- set is dominated by white middle class (or higher) men who speak
- American English and eat at McDonald's occassionally, then those
- folks OUGHT to learn the "language" that they are going to HAVE to
- know to make it through the current academic system. It's just
- another language, like Esperanto, or Espanol, or assembly language,
- fer cryin' out loud. To live in South Central LA, you need to know
- a particular language. To navigate the New York mass transit
- system, you need to know another. And to get through academia, you
- need to know a third.
- 'Course, once you're there, you have the power to make the
- changes from within to help those that are still on the outside get
- inside.
- Ok, folks--I'm sittin' here with the first aid kit, waiting
- for the rips and tears.
