- 1. In the "mountains" of north Georgia, an area well below the Mason-Dixon
- line, there are many apple orchards (as well as peach orchards, of course).
- My preferred type is Granny Smith--green, crisp, and tart.
- 2. What wonderful names apples have! The list recently posted put me in mind
- of the names W.H. Auden gives for two species of birds, veins of lead in Derbys
- hire ("Friarfold Hush"), and the male and female genitalia ("Stargazer,"
- "Sportsman's Gap") in A CERTAIN WORLD.
- 3. Discussing apples and menus and ciders is a better way of passing the time
- than Didi and Gogo ever discovered in a similar situation.
- 4. This listserv must surely be one of the most erudite, literate, and witty
- of the 600 or so academic listservs now extant. Hurrah for us all.
