  18. Surprised to see your name on the Net this AM. Wanted to thank you for
  19. the info on First Search you faxed to me -- very helpful -- and
  20. perhaps return the favor by responding to your question.

  22. The MIT Libraries conducted a Information Study of faculty and
  23. graduate students this year in three disciplines: Brain & Cognitive
  24. Science, Management, and Materials Science. One of the information
  25. gathering techniques used was the focus group. We hired a professional
  26. consultant, who also trained the library staff participating in the
  27. Study (including yours truly). So far, two FG's have been conducted,
  28. both with graduate students; one was led by a member of the
  29. professional focus group staff, while the other was led by the Study's
  30. project leader (a librarian). One of the sessions was videotaped, the
  31. other recorded. We expect to do one or more FG's in the fall, when the
  32. Study is expected to be completed.

  34. The Study was done to provide information on how MIT faculty & grad
  35. students find information -- their procedures, methodology, etc. We
  36. also used one-on-one interviews and a survey instrument.

  38. Our project leader is out of the country for the next six months, but
  39. if you seek additional information, you might contact our Associate
  40. Director for Public Services, under whose auspices the Study is being
  41. conducted. His name is David Ferriero & can be reached by email
