- Subject: Re: Signatures
- Lines: 40
-
- Not that I am saying either is the final word but
-
- ZEN AND THE ART OF THE INTERNET says in it's chapter on 'Netiquette'
- in section 4.13.1 -
- "Four lines will suffice-more is just extra garbage for Usenet sites to
- carry..."
- and in reference to ASCII drawings (such as: space shuttles or handwritten
- signatures) it says, "This is NOT cute, and will bother people to no end."
-
- NURSIG - The NorthWestNet User Services Internet Resource Guide (an
- excellent 300 page reference guide to the internet, pointed out to me by
- [another talked to death subject] a forwarded message) says-
- on page 30
- "Keep your sig short, fewer than five lines is enough."
- "Don't include a lot of grahics made of letters and characters, lists of
- all possible telephone numbers, postal and e-mail addresss at which you can
- be contacted, or your favorite quotes."
-
- Personally, I like signatures but some are annoying (cute pictures) but I
- figure it is at the end of the message and if you don't want to read it,
- DON'T!
- Mine is longer than 4 lines BUT since it is all left justified (and not a
- little on the left and some on the right, with lots of spaces in between) I
- probably take up less bandwidth than most signatures (how is that for a
- rationalization??)
-
- And we (EDTECH) have wasted so much bandwith on this and the forwarded
- messages stuff, it is completly defeating the purpose (IMHO).
-
- See ya!
