- MY SUGGESTION IS TO STAY WITH A SPREADSHEET.
-
- People tend to look for specialized programs to do exactly what they want,
- but that's rarely possible unless they hire a programmer. I have found it
- much more productive to teach people to use generic, general-purpose
- applications that they can customize easily.
-
- In the case at hand, almost everyone figures grades a little differently,
- so a "gradebook program" that could accomodate everyone would be almost as
- arcane as Excel or 1-2-3. Most imaginative teachers want to change the way
- they do grades from time to time; most gradebook programs are severely
- limited in their flexibility. I have yet to find a grading scheme that
- can't be handled by a good spreadsheet. The spreadsheets also have better
- graphing tools than any gradebook program I've seen. I've created a grade
- sheet that allows me to change grade cut-offs and automatically updates a
- bar chart of letter grades
-
- Spreadsheets are general-purpose row-and-column manipulators and should be
- used whenever you are working with information that fits into rows and
- columns. If you or your faculty invest in learning one of the spreadsheets,
- they will find many, many more uses for that tool than they ever imagined.
- Time invested in a gradebook program will not help you do anything but
- grades.
-
- (My daughter (6th grade) wanted to do an index to a booklet of
- poems. Not being sure of what an index is, she typed information in
- page-number order. She was devastated when I told her that indeces are in
- alphabetical order. In less than 2 minutes I coaxed her through the process
- of copying her list to Excel, sorting the rows and pasting it back into her
- word processor. She was ecstatic.)
-
- Do yourself a favor and invest your time and money in a good spreadsheet.
- If you want something more like a turnkey system, learn to create macros
- and dialog boxes (they aren't that hard).
