- Just to poke my oar in on this matter :-)...
-
- One of the good things about access to CDs on a Lan is that ( in
- most cases ) the specification of the machine being used as a workstation
- is largely irrelevent. Granted, CDs that store complex searches onto disks
- aren't as fast and any graphics capabilities are lost. But on the whole,
- most of the services we have available are text-based and a user wih
- patience could use an old CGA XT to get access if they had to. This would
- be useful if a department were short on high-spec machines but wanted a PC
- dedicated for CD access.
-
- Using a menu system ( Aston LIS has a BBS-style system of ansi and
- ascii pages that overlay ) scores over Windows in this respect. If we used
- windows as the interface it would stop the system being text-only ( which
- gives a possible upgrade path to a cross-platform BBS system ) .
-
- Also : I posted a request for information from anyone who was using
- a BBS to give cross-platform access to CD systems. 99% of people who
- replied said they were thinking of the same thing and could I pass on any
- info. I'm talking to some Sysops here in England at the moment and I'll
- post something once I get it. This has taken a back-seat at the moment as
- were upgrading the CD system and installing Adonis before term starts.
-
- Anyone with Adonis experience please let me know what to watch out
- for !
