- I know the feeling. Sometimes I feel if I have to deal with Frederick
- Winslow Taylor, Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers, and Henry Ford one
- more time I am going to get into another field.
-
- Try reading some alternative stuff first. Kazantzakis's "Russia,"
- Pasternak's "Zhivagho" and "Safe Conduct" and Rilke/Pasternak/Marina
- Tsvetaeva "Letters 1926" are some alternatives. There is a story in
- here somewhere---what's the story? Take a broader view than what comes
- out of classes and professors. Try coming up with your own synthesis of
- Bolshevism. You might find something worthwhile in the effort.
-
- If you are doing medieval Russia, then you know something about the
- great themes in Russian history, that are now re=emerging in Russia (as
- well as some of the other Russian states). Try examining some of these
- in terms of what went on for seventy years.
-
- I think if you are going to go for a doctorate in history, you are in a
- position to examine and question what everyone has been saying, not just
- to parrot it. Take it on as a challenge.
