  13. "Treblinka, sixty miles northeast of Warsaw, was set down in a dense pine
  14. forest, isolated by a nine-foot electrified barbed wire fence. It was hard
  15. to imagine that behind the always freshly painted railway station, adorned
  16. with geraniums in neat window boxes, a death toll of 840,000 was being
  17. exacted, using highly mechanized extermination techniques. No planes,
  18. friendly or otherwise, were permitted to fly over it or near it. There were
  19. two camps. Treblinka I, created in 1941, was used to punish political
  20. prisoners who were assigned slave labor duties as part of their
  21. `regeneration.' The Poles among them were usually released when their terms
  22. of punishment were completed. The Jews were either worked to death or
  23. transferred to Treblinka II, which became on of the main Nazi murder
  24. centers. At Treblinka II, 300,000 Jews, uprooted from Warsaw, were executed
  25. during the three summer months of 1942.<12> The historian of the Warsaw
  26. Ghetto uprising, Emmanuel Ringelblum, referred to it in his diary notes as
  27. `the slaughter house of European Jewry.'

  29. The term `mechanized' for Treblinka must be taken literally. The technical
  30. appointments of its gas chambers and crematoria were unsurpassed until Hoess
  31. added refinements at Auschwitz that won back for that camp the trophy for
  32. lethal ingenuity. The enterprising directory of the C.N. Kori Company, when
  33. he submitted the bid for equipment at bargain prices, boasted: `We guarantee
  34. the effectiveness of the crematoria ovens as well as their durability, the
  35. use of the best materials and of course, our faultless workmanship.'<13>
