- Can IRC be used as a medium for work group communication?
-
- As part of my Masters Degree I want to look at how students can take more
- control of their learning environments by estalblishing collegiate work
- groups or network amongst themselves.
-
- At the moment I am conducting a case study amongst 30 Graduate Social Science
- students at the University of Tasmania. As part of this study I am looking
- at the differences between how groups perform on a given task (in this case
- the development of a data base) under different communication conditions.
-
- Ten individuals make up the first group that use conventional methods to
- communicate (i.e talking face-to-face, memos, groups meetings) Group two
- consists of ten individuals who will use strictly computer mediated
- communication (i.e E-mail, Talk, IRC) amongst themselves. The final ten
- people will work by themselves as individuals and as such they can use
- whatever method of communcation they wish to 'talk' with each other.
-
- I want to discover if there are any major differences in productivity and
- group dynamics when conventional communication methods are used and when
- computer mediated communication is utialised.
-
- I am also hoping to discover if there are any problems with either method.
- If so what they are how they can be overcome, and if there is an effective
- way that these methods can be combined to produce an effective work group
- organisation that is not only productive but collegiate as well.
-
- To add to the case study that I am looking at here at utas I would also like
- to hear from any people who regularly use IRC as a way to communicate with a
- work/study partner of group, or who would be interested in using IRC as a
- communication medium in a future project to be completed soon.
-
- If there is anyone interested in being involved in a case study of this
- nature would they contact me and I will send them more information on my
- Thesis and what I would like them to do as part of the study I am conducting.
