- Command line parameters:
-
- There is only one command line parameter, which is for VGA users who wish to
- run the game in EGA (for whatever reason, I don't know, but if you ever want
- to, you can...!), which is simply (case insensitive):
-
- WAR-8}! -EGA
-
- General information:
-
- The program only runs on an EGA or VGA monitor. If you try to run it on
- another monitor, it should just give you an error message. The graphics drivers
- are included in the .EXE file.
- The program was created and compiled using Turbo Pascal version 5.0,
- Copyright (c) Borland International, 1987, 1988.

- Instructions
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- War-8}! is a game of hand-eye coordination and also involves some strategy
- and intuition. Each side starts off with five tanks. Player 1 controls the
- tanks on the left side, and Player 2 controls the tanks on the right side. The
- objective of the game, quite simply, is to survive - to be the side with tanks
- remaining.
-
- When you start the game, you will see the terrain drawn (as the terrain is
- randomly generated, each game is different), and then the tanks will "fall"
- to their positions on the playing field. Then, either player 1 or player 2
- goes first (it's random).
-
- When it is your turn, you are prompted to choose a tank. By pressing a
- number between 1 and 5, you change the current "choice" of tank, which is
- shown on the terrain as white, instead of green. You may change your choice
- as often as you wish, and it will only be "chosen" when you press return. If
- a tank has been destroyed, you won't be able to choose that number (and it
- won't show up at the top of the screen).
-
- You will then be prompted to choose a type of weapon, of which there are
- three:
-
- Rocket propelled grenade: This is essentially like throwing a rock, and the
- path of the projectile is parabolic in nature. There are two things you need to
- specify: Direction and Power. First, direction - you will see a white arm
- turning around in a little circle near the top of the screen. There's also a
- larger white arm on the actual playing field. When it's pointing in the
- direction in which you wish to shoot the grenade, press return. You will then
- be prompted to specify the power - at the top of the screen, a circle will be
- filled and unfilled by a line - the more area is filled, the more power the
- grenade will be shot with.
-
- Amplified light pulse: This is basically a laser. You only have to specify
- direction, and it goes in that direction until it hits something. However, as
- it travels, it gradually loses its energy, until it eventually just "dies". It
- has to travel quite a distance to die out, though.
-
- Pyrotechnic missile: This is the most destructive of all the weapons, but
- also the hardest to use. You must specify direction, then power, then Fuel.
- The fuel in no way affects the destructive power of the missile, and acts only
- to propel it. The more fuel there is, the more propulsion there will be. Since
- there are three variables you have to specify, the pyrotechnic missile is the
- most difficult weapon to use.
-
- The Pyrotechnic missile is a special missile designed to be detonated
- on command. When you press 'd' (for detonate), it will begin the detonation
- process. As it takes some time for the missile to build up its explosive
- power, you will need to practice pressing 'd' at the right time. If you press
- it too early, it will result in a very large (but not particularly strong)
- explosion. If you press it too late, it will result in a small and also not
- particularly strong explosion. However, if you press it at the right moment,
- and the missile hits a tank head on, the chances are the tank will be totally
- destroyed.
-
- If a tank is inaccessible due to a lot of dirt being in the way, the
- pyrotechnic missile serves well to rid an area of dirt with its large
- explosion. Also, if your pyrotechnic missile is off-course and will miss the
- tanks, you should press 'd' a little earlier to set off the big explosion, for
- while the explosion isn't as deadly as the direct hit explosion, it will
- probably cause the tank to be damaged (if the tank is touched by the
- explosion), and if used correctly can destroy the tank.
-
- WHITE LINES: All three weapons "bounce" off the white borders. This can be
- used to your advantage to get a missile/RPG/laser over a "mountain" of dirt,
- and can be very useful in other ways too.
-
- BROWN: Everything that is brown is dirt - when any weapon hits it, the
- weapon will explode, removing some of the dirt.
-
- GREY: The buildings can be destroyed by your weapons (and collapse with
- enough damage). They are just there for scenery, and do not "belong" to
- either side (...but it's sure fun to watch them crumble!).
-
- All in all, practice makes perfect, and although it may be hard to get the
- weapons to work in your favor at first, it will get easier as you get used to
- the game.
-
- I hope everyone enjoys the game.....!
-
- SUPPORT SHAREWARE to keep the concept going!

- By the way, if you're wondering what the 8}! extension is, that's so I can
- tell my "war" game from the countless other programs called "war", and is also
- a personal logo - a sideways happy-face! <grin>
