  1. Ergane 2.1 is a multilingual dictionary programme for Windows. It was develop-
  2. ed on a 486 with 8 MByte RAM but it seems that a minimal configuration will
  3. do too.
  4.  
  5. In order to run Ergane needs at least Windows 3.1. The programme does not need
  6. any fonts other than a few of the ones included with Windows 3.1
  7.  
  8. This programme is freeware and the data are free of copyright. There are no
  9. restrictions on the use of either programme or data.
  10.  
  11. The executable file is ERGANE.EXE which must be accessible by Windows; it
  12. needs the following third-party software (included in the ZIP-file) to run:

  14. BRUN300.DLL (Visual Basic 3.0 Runtime module)
  15. CMDIALOG.VBX
  16.  
  17. The most appropriate location for these files would be the Windows system
  18. directory (they may already be installed there for some other Visual Basic 3.0
  19. application).

  21. All other files, containing the necessary data for Ergane can be put in either
  22. the same directory as the programme or in a separate data directory. In case
  23. of a separate directory, the environment table of DOS should contain the va-
  24. riable ERG that indicates the search path.

  28. If this variable is not found the programme looks in the current directory
  29. for the data files.

  33. It's best to keep all Ergane files (except the the aforementioned three) in a
  34. special directory because there are more than 400 of them.

  36. Ergane can do the following things:
  37.  
  38. 1. Translate single words and short expressions from one language to another
  39. by using Esperanto as an intermediate language.

  68. 4. Help with learning foreign languages. It can choose a random words from
  69. language X and the user is then asked to type in the equivalent in language Y.

  72. Ergane 2.0 has the following features:

  74. 1. Vocabularies (varying in size from just a few entries to more than 50,000)
  75. for the following languages:

  77. Dutch, Afrikaans, Frisian, Modern English, Old English, German, Danish, Dano-Norwegian, 
  78. Swedish, Icelandic, Latin, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian, 
  79. Modern Greek, Classical Greek, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Polish, Czech, Serbo-
  80. Croatian, Russian, Finnish, Hungarian, Kurdish (*), Maltese, Turkish, Swahili,
  81. Yoruba, Malay, Indonesian, Maori, Hawaiian, Tahitian, Mandarin (*), Thai, Lao,
  82. Japanese (*), Papiamentu, Sranan and Zulu.

  86. From time to time enlarged vocabularies for these languages and vocabularies
  87. for new languages will be issued.

  89. 2. Additional phonetic transcriptions in IPA for English, Dutch, Thai and Lao.

  91. 3. An export module for generating trilingual (X-Esperanto-Y) dictionaries in
  92. ASCII and several 8 bit character sets (CP 437, Windows International, Latin 
  93. 1 and many others).

  95. 4. Language information (geographical distribution, family tree).
  96.  
  97. 5. Keyboard configuration files that can be modified for use with non-US key-
  98. boards (French, Russian, etc.)
  99.  
  100. 6. A concise user manual (UMANUAL.WRI) and a technical manual (TMANUAL.WRI).
