  16. 1.0.0 *************** CHAPTER 1. - QUICK INSTALLATION ********************
  17.  
  18.  Remove your old UltraSound windows drivers first. You can do this by
  19.  going into your Windows Control Panel, select Drivers and then click
  20.  on the Ultrasound driver then REMOVE.
  21.  
  22.  Once this is done you may click on the ADD button, select 'Unlisted
  23.  drivers' and then type in the path to this directory.
  24.  
  25.  Please read the NOTES sections for possible problems and conflicts. For
  26.  a more detailed explanation on the procedures for adding the updated
  27.  drivers and installing the new UltraSound mixer please refer to
  28.  chapter 3.

  30. 1.1.0 Important Notes
  31.  ---------------------
  32.  
  33.  There are a few things which I KNOW people will miss during this
  34.  installation. Lets try and clear some things up now.
  35.  
  36.  ULTRASND.INI has changed. You will need to manually edit the
  37.   PatchDir= line in this file to point to your UltraSound\MIDI
  38.   directory. Also make sure this file is in your UltraSound directory.
  39.  
  40.  MegaEm V1.0 and previous versions may not work correctly with the new
  41.   ULTRASND.INI format. This has been corrected with newer versions of
  42.   MegaEm.
  43.  
  44.  GRVSULTR.386 - When trying to add the Windows drivers manaully you
  45.   may get the above file duplicated twice in your SYSTEM.INI. Simply
  46.   remove the reference to
  47.  
  48.  All these issues will be resolved once these drivers are incorporated
  49.  into a final product (16 bit Recording, GUS, MAX, etc...).

  51. 2.0.0 ******************** CHAPTER 2. - WHATS NEW ************************
  52.  
  53.  This version of the UltraSound Windows drivers are from the beginning
  54.  of October '93. They have been reviewed by the beta testers and are
  55.  being updated. The decision was made to make this version public for
  56.  two reasons. First, many of the problems people are having with the
  57.  older windows drivers have been corrected. Including MicroSoft Arcade,
  58.  AVI digital audio, After Dark, Laser Master printers and more. Secondly,
  59.  these drivers are stable enough to be released. Most of the changes that
  60.  are being made are cosmetic. Such as the "Debug 0/1" option will be
  61.  changed to "Verify Patchs on Load On/Off".
  62.  
  63.  Some of the new features and bug fixes are:
  64.  
  65.  Linear volume                             <- Option in Control Panel
  66.  Streaming digital audio improved          <- Example AVI
  67.  Patch Banking (Librarian not available yet. You will need to edit)
  68.                (ULTRASND.INI manually)
  69.  Updated Mixer                             <- Mainly usefull for V3.4
  70.                                               UltraSound cards. If you
  71.                                               are running a previous
  72.                                               version of the GUS then
  73.                                               certain options will not
  74.                                               be selectable.
  75.  MIDI notes dropped                        <- Fixed
  76.  Debug Level 1/0                           <- Translation is: Verify

  80. 3.0.0 ********** CHAPTER 3. - DETAILED INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS *********

  83. 3.1.0 Manually Adding UltraSound Windows 3.1 Drivers
  84.  ----------------------------------------------------
  85.  
  86.     The following are instructions to manualy install the UltraSound
  87.     Windows drivers. If you are new to Windows, the following procedures
  88.     may look daunting, but it's actually quite easy. Please follow
  89.     along step by step.
  90.  
  91.     *   Note: If you have previously installed any other sound cards
  92.         or other MCI midi devices in your system, you must 'remove' them
  93.         using Window's Control Panel==>Drivers applet; See below.
  94.  
  95.   - The Windows driver installation will overwrite your current
  96.     Midimap.cfg file with a new one created specially for
  97.     UltraSound. If you wish to retain your current Midimap.cfg
  98.     file (it's in the \windows\system sub directory), you can
  99.     copy it with a different name or extension to the same
  100.     directory. e.g.:
  101.  
  102.     c:\windows\system> copy midimap.cfg midimap.sav.
  103.  
  104.   Installing the Drivers
  105.   ----------------------
  106.  
  107.   - First, start Windows by typing <WIN> <enter> at the DOS
  108.     prompt and in your Windows directory.
  109.  
  110.   - Open the DRIVERS applet located in the CONTROL PANEL
  111.     (in the MAIN group).
  112.  
  113.   - The normal installation of Windows 3.1 should have already
  114.     installed: MIDI Mapper, TIMER, {MCI} Midi Sequencer, {MCI}
  115.     Sound  drivers. These drivers must be there for UltraSound to
  116.     work. If any of these drivers are missing, please install
  117.     them now by clicking on the ADD button. You will be prompted
  118.     for certain disks from your Windows 3.1 disk set, so have
  119.     them handy. During this installation you will be prompted to
  120.     'Don't Restart Now' or 'Restart Now'. You should select
  121.     'Don't Restart Now' your new drivers have been selected.
  122.     Restarting Windows will effect the changes.
  123.  
  124.   - One final note before installing the UltraSound driver;
  125.     If you are upgrading from a Sound Blaster, Media Vision,
  126.     or other sound card, you must first remove their associated
  127.     drivers. Select each driver to remove and click on the
  128.     'Remove' button. You can 'remove' several drivers, if you
  129.     like, before restarting Windows to effect the changes.
  130.  
  131.   - Now you must install the UltraSound Windows driver.
  132.     Click on the 'ADD' button, and select the 'Unlisted or
  133.     Updated Driver' in the drivers list box, and click 'OK'.
  134.     A new dialog box will appear in which you must enter the
  135.     path to your UltraSound Windows driver.
  136.     e.g.:  c:>\ultrasnd\windows (assuming you installed UltraSound
  137.     to drive c:)
  138.  
  139.   - The 'Ultra Wave and MIDI Synth' driver description should appear
  140.     in yet another dialog box. Click on it and then 'OK'. The
  141.     UltraSound driver and associated files will install in the
  142.     appropriate directories automatically.
  143.  
  144.   - You will then see ANOTHER dialog box, this one called
  145.     UltraSound Setup. Click on the appropriate boxes and change the
  146.     setup parameters if needed to match your UltraSound configuration.
  147.     Refer to the Set-Up Record you filled in on page 22 of this manual
  148.     (see... it did come in handy!). Click on 'Restart Now' to effect
  149.     the changes.
  150.  
  151.   - If you have your UltraSound output hooked up to a stereo
  152.     or headphones, you should hear a start-up .Wav sound played
  153.     (the default one sounds like 'Ta Da'...) when Windows starts.
  154.  
  155.   - To further test .Wav file playing, open the Windows Sound
  156.     (in the Control Panel, or Sound Recorder (in the accessories
  157.     group) applets, and experiment.
  158.  
  159.   - To test MIDI file playing, open the Media Player applet in
  160.     the Accessories group, and look for the 'CANYON.MID' MIDI file
  161.     which is supplied in Windows 3.1. Press the 'triangle' play
  162.     button and you should hear a rendition of the song.
  163.  
  164.   - You are now ready to use any Windows based MIDI sequencer of
  165.     MIDI player to create or hear songs with UltraSound's full
  166.     16 bit digitized instruments. Consult the manual for your
  167.     software application or the MS Windows 3.1 manual for an
  168.     explanation of the Midi-Mapper applet in the Control panel.
  169.     If you are using UltraSound as your only output device, the
  170.     current Midi-Mapper settings should do nicely.
  171.  
  172.     Note: If you are upgrading from a Sound Blaster and you have no sound
  173.           or Windows Sartup crashes after installing UltraSound drivers,
  174.           you may have an reference to an old Sound Blaster driver.
  175.           Edit your \Windows\system.ini and look for a line near the
  176.           bottom of the [386enh] section that reads 'DEVICE=VSBPD.386'.
  177.           Remove or REM out this line, save the edited SYSTEM.INI file,'
  178.           and re-start Windows.
  179.  
  180. 3.1.0 Installing and Using the UltraSound Mixer Applet
  181.  ------------------------------------------------------
  182.  
  183.     We have included a Windows applet to allow volume control
  184.     output on/off, and selection of line and/or mic input.
  185.     Here's how to install it:
  186.  
  187.   - Select the group you would like the Mixer applet to reside
  188.     in, then pull down Program Manager's File menu and select 'NEW'.
  189.  
  190.   - With the 'Program Item' radio button on (the default), click
  191.     on 'OK'. A dialog box will open called 'Program Item Properties'.
  192.     In the 'Name' text box, call the item 'US_Mixer', or 'UltraMix' or
  193.     whatever you like. in the 'Command Line' box enter the path:
  194.     c:\ultrasnd\windows\mixer.exe (assuming you installed the Ultrasound
  195.     files in your c: drive). Then click on 'OK'. The Mixer Applet's Icon
  196.     will then appear in the group you selected.
  197.  
  198.   - You can then open the applet by double clicking on it and
  199.     experiment with the level control, and the input and  output
  200.     check boxes. When recording using the line out of a CD or tape
  201.     player, be sure to have the mic input turned 'off' to avoid
  202.     recording noise from the unused input. The same goes for
  203.     recording with the mic input (turn 'line input' off.)
