  2. INSTALLATION NOTES FOR PAGEMAKER 5.0

  5. The following information was not available when the
  6. PageMaker 5.0 installation instructions went to press.
  7. Please read these notes before installing PageMaker.
  8.

  11. STREAMLINING INSTALLATION PERFORMANCE
  12. ============================================
  13.  
  14. A low BUFFERS setting in your CONFIG.SYS file can
  15. substantially increase the time it takes to install
  16. PageMaker. For that reason, the Aldus Setup program will
  17. alert you if the BUFFERS setting in your CONFIG.SYS file is
  18. less than 20. For optimal installation performance, consider
  19. increasing the BUFFERS statement in your CONFIG.SYS to 50.
  20. (IMPORTANT: make a system diskette that contains a backup
  21. copy of the CONFIG.SYS before editing it, as an editing
  22. error can cause your system to function improperly. If you
  23. do edit CONFIG.SYS, you will need to restart your computer
  24. for the changes to take effect. Refer to your Windows or DOS
  25. documentation for details on CONFIG.SYS.) Disk-caching
  26. software, such as Windows SMARTDrive, can supplement the DOS
  27. file buffering system. If your caching program is set up to
  28. cache the reading of files from your floppy drive, you wilI
  29. not need to change your buffers setting. In general, using
  30. SMARTDrive or another disk-caching program helps ensure
  31. optimal installation. Windows is typically setup to run
  32. SMARTDrive automatically. If for some reason SMARTDrive is
  33. not installed on your system, or if you want to change its
  34. settings, refer to your Windows documentation for
  35. instructions.

  39. MAKING SURE HARD DRIVE SPACE IS AVAILABLE
  40. ============================================

  42. You will need approximately 2MB more free space on your hard
  43. drive than the Aldus Setup program informs you during
  44. installation.

  48. PREPARING TO INSTALL PRINTER DRIVERS
  49. ============================================
  50.  
  51. The HP LaserJetIII driver included with Windows 3.1 does not
  52. support the newer universal driver technology required by
  53. PageMaker 5.0. To install the HP LaserJet III driver
  54. included with PageMaker, follow these steps:
  55. 1)  When Aldus Setup opens the "Printers" Control Panel,
  56. remove any HP printer listings from the "Installed Printers"
  57. list box.
  58. 2)  Follow the steps with the heading "To install a printer
  59. driver in Windows," beginning on page 6 of the PageMaker 5.0
  60. Getting Started manual.
  61. 3)  When finished installing, use the File Manager to delete
  62. the files HPPCL5A.DRV and HPPCL5A.HLP from your
  63. Windows\System directory. (Note, if you receive an error
  64. message, restart Windows and try deleting these files
  65. again.)

  67. Also note that if the "Printers" module is suppressed in the
  68. Windows CONTROL.INI file, you can encounter minor problems
  69. with the Control Panel icon during PageMaker installation.

  72. USING PAGEMAKER 5.0 WITH OTHER ALDUS PRODUCTS
  73. ============================================

  75. If you have Aldus IntelliDraw 1.0 or the Aldus
  76. PhotoStyler/Gallery Effects Accessory Pack installed on your
  77. system when you install PageMaker 5.0, you will have
  78. conflicts between versions of the ALDVM.DLL and ALDVMRES.RSL
  79. support files required by these applications. PageMaker
  80. installs a utility that resolves the conflict by updating
  81. the files so that the applications can share them. After
  82. installing PageMaker, take the following steps:
  83. 1)  In File Manager, open the ALDUS\USENGLSH\UTILITY
  84. directory.
  85. 2)  Double-click the IDUPDATE.EXE file.
  86. 3)  For each file update message, click "OK" as prompted, or
  87. follow the instructions on screen.
  88. 4)  When the utility notifies you that the update process is
  89. complete, click "OK." You can then run your Aldus
  90. applications as usual.

  93. NETWORK INSTALLATION AND NETWORK COPY DETECTION
  94. ============================================

  96. The PageMaker 5.0 license agreement permits one person to use
  97. a purchased copy of PageMaker at one time. However, if you
  98. purchased a ten-user license package, up to ten stations may
  99. use the same copy of PageMaker at once. Refer to the license
  100. agreement card in the PageMaker 5.0 box for details.

  102. You are responsible for ensuring that PageMaker is used in
  103. accordance with the software license agreement. If you have a
  104. Novell Netware network (version 2.15 or later), PageMaker's
  105. built-in Network Copy Detection helps you ensure legal usage
  106. at your site.
  107. Each copy of PageMaker has a unique identification number that
  108. identifies it on a Novell network. (Copies of PageMaker
  109. installed from the same disk set have the same network
  110. identification number.) When a copy of PageMaker licensed for
  111. a single-user is started, its network identification number is
  112. broadcast over the network in a semaphore. Users starting an
  113. additional copy of PageMaker with the same network
  114. identification number will be required to exit PageMaker
  115. immediately.

  118. Copy Detection, read the file NETWORK.WRI (installed in the
  119. PM5 directory) after installing PageMaker.

  123. LAUNCHING PAGEMAKER 5.0 AFTER INSTALLATION

  126. If you launch PageMaker from the File Manager, be sure to
  127. click the file "pm5.exe" as opposed to "pm5app.exe."
