- Release Notes - PowerChute plus for Windows NT v4.2.3
-
- General Information
-
- 1. UPS Communications
-
- The versions of NTDETECT.COM and NTLDR which ship with Windows
- NT version 3.1 will prevent PowerChute from to establishing
- communications with the UPS, and may cause anomalous UPS
- behavior. This problem is corrected in Service Pack 2; the
- versions of NTDETECT.COM and NTLDR included with PowerChute will
- also correct the problem. If you already have customized
- versions of either of these files, do not use the PowerChute
- versions. Instead, contact Microsoft for versions for your
- system and which are compatible with APC UPSs.
-
- During installation, you may be asked if you wish to replace the
- NTDETECT.COM and NTLDR files on your system. You will be asked
- this question only if you are using Windows NT version 3.1. If
- you do have Service Pack 2, or have customized versions of
- NTDETECT.COM or NTLDR, then answer NO to this query; if you do
- not have Service Pack 2, then answer YES.
-
- 2. PowerChute Password
-
- The password protection associated with the PowerChute client has
- been disabled in this version of PowerChute plus. If you wish to
- enable PowerChute password protection for a server, you must make a
- change to the PWRCHUTE.INI file in the PowerChute directory. Using a
- text editor, open the PWRCHUTE.INI file and locate the [ Server ]
- section. Change the line which reads SECURITY=NO to say SECURITY=YES:
-
- [ Server ]
- Security=Yes
-
- With this parameter set to Yes on a server, when a the PowerChute
- client is invoked and the server is selected to monitor, the user
- will be prompted for a password. The default password is APC; this
- can be changed by modifying PWRCHUTE user through the Windows NT
- User Manager.
-
- If Security = Yes, the password may not be recognized if the user
- has existing connections to the server to be monitored. Use one of the
- following methods to avoid this problem:
-
- i. When you wish to use PowerChute to monitor servers, log in
- to Windows NT as the PWRCHUTE user. When the PowerChute client is
- invoked, the password must be entered; since a new connection does
- not need to be established, the password will be validated properly.
-
- ii. Before invoking the PowerChute client, disconnect any
- existing connections to the server that you wish to monitor.
- This can be done through File Manager by selecting Disk,
- Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnecting from the server
- to be monitored through PowerChute.
-
- 3. PowerChute Mail
-
- PowerChute can send E-Mail messages using Windows NT Mail. For
- PowerChute to send mail, a path to a post office must be defined in
- the system profile. Accomplish this by performing the following
- steps:
-
- i. Using the Mail function, set up a Post Office
-
- ii. In the Administrative Tools group, select User Profile Editor
-
- iii. Select FILE, SAVE AS SYSTEM DEFAULT.
-
- Note: You must be saving a user profile that already has mail
- configured. Typically, this is done by setting up mail for the
- Administrator and saving the Administrator's profile as the system
- default.
-
- 4. Diskettes
-
- This package contains 3.5" diskettes instead of a CDROM. Select
- the appropriate disk for the type of processor that you are using:
- Intel, MIPS, or DEC Alpha. PowerChute functionality is
- identical on each of these processors. If you wish to obtain the
- PowerChute CDROM, contact APC customer service.
-
- 5. Compatibility
-
- The software in this package can only be run under Windows NT.
- The PowerChute client for Windows NT cannot be run under Windows or
- Windows for Workgroups.
-
- 6. Control Panel UPS Icon
-
- As part of the PowerChute installation, the UPS icon is removed
- from the Control Panel group. This icon cannot be used with
- PowerChute; access PowerChute through the PowerChute icon, which is
- placed by default in the PowerChute group.
-
- 7. Removing PowerChute plus
-
- If you wish to remove PowerChute plus from your system, a utility has
- been provided called REMOVE.EXE. This utility is located in the
- PowerChute directory, but must be moved to another location in order
- to completely remove the PowerChute installation. Relocate REMOVE.EXE,
- then execute it, and all PowerChute software will be removed and the
- native Windows NT UPS monitoring will be restored.
-
- If you wish to remove PowerChute manually, perform the following steps:
-
- a. If the PowerChute client is running, close it.
-
- b. From the Main group, select Control Panel, Services.
- Scroll to the UPS service, and select Stop. You may also wish to
- change the Startup attributes for the UPS service to Manual.
-
- c. Using File Manager, delete the PowerChute directory.
-
- d. Using File Manager, select Disk, Stop Sharing, and remove
- the PWRCHUTE share.
-
- e. Using File Manager, locate the SYSTEM32 directory; this is
- usually under WINNT, off the root. Locate the file called
- UPSCPL.BAK, and rename it to UPS.CPL. This will restore the UPS
- icon in the Control Panel group.
-
- f. Using File Manager, locate and execute the file called
- REGEDT32.EXE. In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE group, select System,
- ControlSet001, Services, UPS. Select the ImagePath line, and then
- select Edit, String. Delete the path name of the PowerChute
- directory, and enter the path name to UPS.EXE in the SYSTEM32
- directory. The image path should look like this:
-
- C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\UPS.EXE
-
- g. Also in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE group, select System, CurrentControlSet,
- Services, EventLog, System, UPS. Select the EventMessageFile line, and
- then select Edit, String. Delete the path name of the PowerChute .dll
- file, and enter the path name to NETMSG.DLL in the SYSTEM32 directory.
- The image path should look like this:
-
- C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\NETMSG.DLL
-
- h. Exit File Manager.
-
- i. Using User Manager, delete the PWRCHUTE user.
-
- j. Delete the PowerChute icon and the PowerChute group.
-
- k. Reboot your system.
-
-
- 8. Using PowerChute PLUS with Microsoft Systems Management Server
-
- PowerChute PLUS for Windows NT supports Microsoft Systems Management
- Server. PowerChute PLUS generates a UPS MIF file that contains basic
- UPS information. This file is generated any time communication is
- established with the UPS, and can be viewed in graphical form in the
- Personal Computer Properties window of the SMS Administrator.
-
-
- If you are using SMS, which is determined by looking for the SMS.INI
- file in the root directory of your C: drive, the UPS.MIF file is
- generated. You can overide the generation of the MIF file with the
- PWRCHUTE.INI setting below:
-
- [ Server ]
- GenerateMifFile = No
-
-
- The UPS.MIF file is automatically generated by PowerChute plus and
- placed in the SMS ISVMIFS directory as defined by the MachineISVMIFPath
- entry in the system's SMS.INI file. Once placed in this directory, SMS
- takes over and gathers the information from the MIF file and stores it
- in the SMS site database.
-
-
- The UPS.MIF information can be viewed within SMS by viewing the Personal
- Computer Properties window for the system the UPS is attached to. An APC
- UPS group icon will show up in the left hand column under the groups
- heading. Selecting the APC UPS group icon displays the UPS MIF values.
- The format of the display (columnar vs. row) can be controlled by SMS.
