- Thank you for buying ALFIE-IT.
- Version 4.02 offers several new helpful features
-
-
- CANNED MESSAGES: To save time typing redundant messages create canned messages.
-
- To use or create a CANNED MESSAGE simply enter ALFIE-IT, select
- a MEMBER or GROUP like normal, and press <ENTER>, to get in the
- MESSAGE Window. Once you are in the MESSAGE Window press the
- <F2> key to bring up the 30 canned messages. To change a canned
- message, place the cursor over the message to be edited and begin
- changing it. To select a canned message place the cursor over the
- desired message and press <ENTER>. This will bring the CANNED
- MESSAGE into the MESSAGE Window, and can be used like any normal
- message you type in manually. The CANNED MESSAGE will OVERWRITE
- any text that you type in the MESSAGE WINDOW before using <F2> and
- you can add text after bringing in the CANNED MESSAGE.
-
- Note: The canned message file is updated only when changes are made
- while exiting from <F2>(CANNED MESSAGES).
-
-
- DIRECT CONNECT: For cellular phones
-
- Now you can send messages from your cellular phone while on the road.
- Set your phone line type in ALMODCON.EXE to CELLU. This selection
- will put ALFIE-IT in the cellular dial mode.
-
- NOTE: While we have tested this mode in fringe coverage areas at
- 2400 baud with good results we suggest setting your
- baud rate to 300 while in the direct connect mode.
-
- ******* PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE AND SEND MESSAGES AT THE SAME TIME **********
-
- HOW IT WORKS.
- 1. Plug your modem into your cellular phone RJ-11 JACK.
- (Not all cellular phones come standard with this option)
- 2. Run ALFIE-IT and enter your messages like normal
- 3. Look in the modem status box and follow the prompts.
- e.g. DIAL 555-1212
- 4. Dial the number on your cellular phone like any other call.
- 5. As soon as you hear the PAGER CENTRAL COMPUTER answer the
- call press the <ENTER> key on your computer or you can
- "BAIL OUT" by pressing the <ESC> key.
- 6. The modem status box will display ESTABLISHING CONNECTION
- 7. Once the computers "CARRIER UP" the message is sent normally.
- 8. When the call is completed the modem status will tell you
- to hang up your cellular phone.
-
- Note: All of the ALFIE-IT features work with direct connect like
- group calls, multiple pager centrals, etc.
-
- AUTO BAUD RATE: (Correction to PAGE 16 for MODEM BAUD RATE)
- Now you can set the baud rate in ALMODCON.EXE to the baud rate of
- your modem instead of the paging central baud rate. ALFIE-IT will
- automatically send the messages at the fastest speed your paging
- company will allow. Setting the baud rate faster will also load
- ALFIE-IT faster.
- NOTE: If you get an E15 or E26 error for any reason try setting
- almodcon to 300 baud and retry. If you still get the
- error read the MODEMS section in this README file
- and locate your modem manual before calling for
- tech support.
-
- FASTER MODEM INITIALIZATION
- Our DEEP modem initialization has made the ALFIE-IT line of products
- VERY DEPENDABLE, However, We wanted to speed-it-up too! So we did.
- If you need to send special commands to your modem you can use the
- secondary init string from command line. Many communication programs
- send commands to the modem and expect that the modem is there. It is
- possible that your communications/terminal program will run with your
- modem and yet ALFIE returns an E15. This is usually due MNP hardware
- compression of todays modems. SEE MODEMS in this README file.
-
-
- SECONDARY INIT STRING
- To send a secondary modem init string USE the following
- e.g. ALFIE-IT /ATxxxxxx Where xxxxx is your init string.
- DO NOT LEAVE ANY SPACES AFTER THE AT.
-
- COMMAND LINE PAGING
- If you want to speed page you can enter data directly from the
- COMMAND line using the following format:
- e.g ALFIE-IT [ACCOUNT_NUMBER] [MESSAGE]
- This option uses the default pager central set in ALMODCON.
-
-
- <NOTES>**********************************************************************
-
- ACCOUNT NUMBER: Just what is it?
-
- There is no industry wide used standard for this term yet.
- ACCOUNT NUMBER = PIN NUMBER = GHOST NUMBER = ID NUMBER
- = ALHPA NUMBER = PAGER NUMBER
- This number can be a 1 to 7 digit number
- If you have any further questions on this please call us.
-
-
- ALFIE-IT:
- When in the Member/Group window you can find your member or group by
- using our "DUCK HUNT" by pressing the first letter of the name A-Z.
- Want to send the same message to several members?? Use <ALT><L>.
-
- ALMODCON: (System SETUP)
- Now you can automatically personalize all your pages with MESSAGE ID.
- Great for multiple locations, where did my page come from ?? EVTEK?
- MONO MODE If the programs do not present well on your mono, LCD, or plasma
- display then run ALMODCON /M to turn on MONO mode and then <SAVE>.
-
- ALMEMBER: (Adding Members/Building Groups)
- Group building made even easier in Member Assembler. The <TAB> key
- works from both the GROUP WINDOW or MEMBER WINDOW so assemble away.
- Want to sort your groups and/or members?? No problem, use <ALT><S>.
-

- <MODEMS>**********************************************************************
-
- A NOTE ON MODEMS:
- Not every Duck is the same. This is also true in modems.
- Many 9600/14.4 baud modems power up in a MNP hardware compression mode as
- a power up default and you may have to set the modem to run in asynchronous
- mode. We have added a secondary Modem INIT string to allow you to adjust
- alfie for your modem. If you are not sure where your modem is SEE <TEST>
-
-
- I GET THIS ERROR Exx: WHAT SHOULD I DO.............. WRITE IT DOWN (Exx:)!!
-
- E15: E15a,b,c,d...
- Your paging company or one you are trying to connect with may not
- support The MNP mode. ALFIE does and eventually all modems will.
-
- 1) Your modem may be in a MNP mode.
- A. Set your modem baud rate to 300 and try paging again.
- If your page goes through and your paging company supports
- a faster baud rate then your modem is probably using MNP
- Exit out and restart program by typing alfie /MNP, this will
- send down a &Q0 to your modem to turn off MNP for most modems.
-
- B. Look in your modem manual for the code to turn off
- MNP, and any other COMPRESSION, and to set the modem in a
- asynchronous mode, and try using them one at a time
- Exit out and restart program by typing alfie /ATxxxxxxxxx
- use the codes from your modem manual in place of the xxx's
- This code is sent as a second modem init string to your modem.
-
- NOTE: Not every modem uses the same codes even though they are
- Hayes compatible modems. IF THE ABOVE SUGGESTIONS DO NOT SOLVE
- YOUR PROBLEM THEN locate your modem manual and Give us a call.
- We will be happy to help you with MNP.
- E26: E26a,b,c,xx
- A time out condition exists. ALFIE was waiting for data to come in
- and no data came in from the modem, or pager central.
-
- E28: The central failed to accept your message for the following reasons:
- A) Check for incorrect ACCOUNT# (PIN) number.
- B) Check the ACCOUNT# (PIN) number correspond with CENTRAL NUMBER.
- C) Check your message length, is it to long?
- D) It is possible that there was a noisy phone line corrupting data.
- Try sending a short message e.g."HELLO" before calling tech support.
-
-
- <TEST>************************************************************************
-
- Find your modem:
- ALFIE has a TEST program on the 3-1/2 720k disk to find and test
- your modem:
- To use the test Type COMQUAK2 and the test will find your modem.
