-
-
- DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
-
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
- before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
- using it after a reasonable evaluation period, you are expected
- to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some
- request registration while others require it, some specify a
- maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from
- the simple right to continue using the software to an updated
- program with printed manual.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
- and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
- exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
- programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
- of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
- and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
- distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
- and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
- specific group. For example, some authors require written
- permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
- Shareware.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
- should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
- whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
- fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
- And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
- has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
- product, you don't pay for it.

- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- INTRODUCTION
-
- Over_LAZ is a collection of over 200 image overlay files for use
- with word processing programs, databases, spreadsheets and other
- applications, and a laser printer. Two separate versions are
- available: Over_LAZ HP is for HP LaserJet compatible printers
- (Series II, III and 4) and Over_LAZ PS is for PostScript based
- printers. This documentation is for the LaserJet version. All
- Over_LAZ HP files are designed for 300 x 300 dpi resolution.
- Printers capable of higher resolution (such as the LaserJet 4 at
- 600 x 600 dpi), will print the Over_LAZ files at 300 x 300 dpi.
-
- Many word processing, spreadsheet and database programs are
- capable of downloading direct commands to a printer prior to
- and/or during printing a job. Over_LAZ uses this capability to
- automatically print letterheads, images and/or borders on a text
- page. The overlays are inserted in your document or printout
- when it is printed on a LaserJet printer. The Over_LAZ
- collection includes general office forms (such as 'inter-office
- memo', 'notice of meeting', etc.) in several different styles, as
- well as rubber stamp (or 'watermark') type overlays (such as
- 'DRAFT', 'confidential', etc.) and page frames and borders.
-
- Over_LAZ files are designed to work with a minimally equipped
- 'bare bones' LaserJet series II or compatible printer (i.e. with
- only 512k RAM and no extra font cartridges). Of course, Over_LAZ
- is fully compatible with extra printer RAM, fonts and cartridges,
- as well as LaserJet series III and 4 printers. Over_LAZ will
- print at 300 DPI resolution on the 600 DPI LaserJet 4 printer.
- If you are using the downloaded macro method for printing (see
- page 63) the overlays, we suggest that you have additional
- printer memory.
-
- With Over_LAZ, you only need to keep one kind of paper (normal
- blank paper) in your laser printer. There is no need to juggle
- forms and special letterhead papers each time you want to print!
-
- * * * *
-
- THIS DOCUMENTATION ASSUMES THAT THE READER IS
- REASONABLY FAMILIAR WITH MS-DOS, WORD PROCESSING AND
- LASER PRINTER CONCEPTS. HOWEVER, BY FOLLOWING THE
- EXAMPLES GIVEN IN THE TEXT, EVEN A RELATIVELY IN-
- EXPERIENCED USER CAN CREATE PROFESSIONAL LOOKING
- DOCUMENTS WITH EASE!
- * * * *
-
-
- Because Over_LAZ HP uses LaserJet specific command sequences, it
-
- 1

-
- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide

-
- is not compatible with other types of printers such as PostScript
- based laser printers, dot matrix, ink jet or bubble jet printers.
- A separate version of Over_LAZ is available for PostScript
- printers. Look for the file OVERPS.ZIP or OVERPS.EXE on your
- favourite BBS or shareware retailer.

-
- EXTRACTING AND COPYING FILES
-
- All of the Over_LAZ files are contained in four self extracting
- PKZIP archives: OVER4A.EXE, OVER4B.EXE, OVER4C.EXE and
- OVER4D.EXE. (Note that some BBS systems or shareware
- distributors may have renamed the files to OVER4x.ZIP. In this
- case, you will also need a copy of PKUNZIP to perform the file
- extraction.) The files may be provided on one high density (1.2
- meg or 1.44 meg) disk, or four 360k 5.25" disks. If you have
- downloaded the files from a BBS, make sure you have all four
- files.
-
- The files must be extracted on your hard drive. When extracted,
- the files will occupy approx 5 meg of space and contain over 300
- files.
-
- To install Over_LAZ, create a subdirectory on your hard drive,
- such as:
-
- MD C:\OVER4
-
- Copy the files OVER4A.EXE, OVER4B.EXE, OVER4C.EXE and OVER4D.EXE
- to this directory, then extract the files with:
-
- OVER4A
- OVER4B
- OVER4C
- OVER4D
-
- If the files were obtained as OVER4x.ZIP, you will need to use
- PKUNZIP to extract the files:
-
- PKUNZIP OVER4A *.*
- PKUNZIP OVER4B *.*
- PKUNZIP OVER4C *.*
- PKUNZIP OVER4D *.*
-
- Once the files are extracted, you can delete the original
- OVER4x.* files (make sure you have a copy on a floppy disk for
- safe keeping).
-
- Additional installation instructions for individual application
- programs, if required, are given below under the usage
- instructions for each application.

- WORDPERFECT 4.X
-
- DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ
-
- WordPerfect version 4.x for DOS can only send simple printer
- commands. Therefore, the overlay files (*.HP) must be downloaded
- to the printer as printer macro files prior to being used in a
- document. Downloading .HP files is done with the OVL.EXE utility
- and can be done automatically by inserting the appropriate
- command lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or startup batch file for
- WordPerfect. A typical batch file to start WordPerfect might
- look like:
-
- OVL /D
- WP

- INSERTING Over_LAZ INTO DOCUMENT
-
- With WordPerfect 4.x, all commands to print an overlay must be
- inserted into the document manually. To insert the commands,
- press:
-
- <Ctrl> <F8> A
-
- For (Print Format Menu) Printer Command, then type in the printer
- command sequence, as shown below. The generic command sequence
- is:
-
- <27>&f###y3X
-
- where ### is the macro ID number of the overlay you wish to add
- to your document. Note that the angle brackets < > (or 'less
- than' and 'greater than' symbols) around the 27 are typed as part
- of the command sequence. For example:
-
- <27>&f101y3X
-
- will activate the AGEN.HP overlay, assuming that it has been
- downloaded to the printer. If the file AGEN.HP had not been
- downloaded, nothing will happen when you insert the above command

-
- (but your text will still print out as normal).
-
- Note that the command string is case sensitive (e.g., you must
- use f and not F, y not Y, numeral zero not letter o, and X not
- x). The command sequence can be inserted on a single page, or in
- a header or footer for printing on every page. Multiple overlays
- can be used on a single page or different ones on different
- pages. Multiple overlay commands can be combined into a single
- string.
-
- A list of macro ID numbers can be printed by choosing the PRINT
- option from the main menu of the OVL.EXE program. You can print
- out a complete list, or just the list for the downloaded files.
- The list will contain five sets of values (in different formats)
- for each overlay. For WordPerfect 4.x, use the command sequence
- listed under the column marked WORDPERFECT.
-
- If you wish to confirm that the printer command is included in
- your document, press the <Alt>-<F3> (REVEAL CODES) key. You will
- see a hidden command [Ptr Cmnd: <27>&f###y3X], where '###' is the
- ID number of the Over_LAZ file you have just included.
-
- Note that the overlay will not appear on the screen (other than a
- literal printing of the command sequence). It will only appear
- on the document when it is printed.
-
- For more details about the mechanics of using printer command
- files, consult your WordPerfect reference manual 'Printer

- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- WORDPERFECT 5.X (FOR DOS)
-
- INSTALLING Over_LAZ
-
- WordPerfect 5.x can download printer command files (such as
- Over_LAZ .HP files) to the printer as part of a print job. In
- order to use Over_LAZ, WP 5.x must first be told where to find
- the Over_LAZ files. Note that this initial setup is normally
- only done once. However, if you use multiple printer drivers
- (such as for a Laserjet II and a Laserjet III), then each printer
- driver must be set up individually. All printer drivers can
- share the same files in the same directory. If you are using
- Over_LAZ on a network, each user must be set up individually. In
- order to conserve disk space, the Over_LAZ files may be placed in
- a shared directory on the file server.
-
- The initial setup is easily done by one of the following
- procedures:
-
-
- If You Already Use Downloaded Fonts with WordPerfect
-
- Copy the Over_LAZ *.HP files to your WordPerfect downloaded fonts
- sub-directory. In order to conserve disk space, you need only
- copy the files that you intend to use. The files can then be
- deleted from the original directory. (You should keep the
- original ZIPped archive in a safe place in case you ever need one
- of the files again).
-
- For example, if your downloaded fonts were located in the
- directory C:\WP\FONTS and the Over_LAZ *.HP files were installed
- to C:\OVER4 (see page 5 for initial installation instructions),
- you would use the command:
-
- COPY C:\OVER4\*.HP C:\WP\FONTS
-
- (Alternatively, you can copy your soft font file to the C:\OVER4
- subdirectory, then change the WP soft font directory to the
- C:\OVER4 directory.)
-
- If you do not know which directory contains your downloaded
- fonts, you can check it from within the WordPerfect PRINT
- function menu:
-
- Key Function
- ------------+------------------------------------------
- Press <shift>-<F7> PRINT
-
- S Select Printer (Note: ensure that a

- The current path will be displayed next to the menu item which
- reads "Path for Downloadable Fonts and Printer Command Files".
- Press the <Enter> key several times to return to the main
- document editing screen.
-
-
- If You Do Not Already Use Downloaded Fonts
-
- If you do not already use downloaded fonts with WordPerfect, you
- must set up a sub-directory, copy the Over_LAZ *.HP files to it,
- then tell WordPerfect where the Over_LAZ files are located. If
- you have followed the initial installation instructions on page
- 5, the *.HP files will be in the directory C:\OVER4.
-
- Next, you must tell WordPerfect the full path name of the
- Over_LAZ sub-directory. This is done from within the WordPerfect
- PRINT menu with the following sequence of key strokes:
-
- Key Function
- ------------+------------------------------------------
- Press <shift>-<F7> PRINT

- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- USING THE Over_LAZ WP 5.x MENU MACRO
-
- Release 4 of Over_LAZ HP is provided with a WordPerfect 5.x macro
- which displays a menu to greatly simplify the task of inserting
- an overlay into a document. The macro file ALTO.WPM
- automatically inserts the correct WordPerfect codes into the
- document at the current cursor location and will work with either
- WP 5.0 or 5.1. ALTO can be activated while editing the body of a
- document, or while editing the headers or footers. It cannot be
- accidentally called from other WP non-text editing functions,
- such as the printer setup screen.
-
- Copy the file ALTO.WPM to your WordPerfect Macro Directory. If
- you already have a macro file named ALTO, be sure to rename
- either it or the Over_LAZ macro so you do not erase your old
- macro. If you do not know where your WordPerfect macro files are
- stored, you can locate them with the WordPerfect Setup feature
- (<shift>-<F1> (for SETUP), L (for location of files), then K (for
- keyboard and macro files)). If no location is specified,
- WordPerfect will look for the macros in the same directory as the
- main WordPerfect program files.
-
- To activate the Over_LAZ macro, press the <Alt>-O key
- combination. (Note, if you have renamed the ALTO macro to
- another Alt key combination, you will have to use that different
- key combination). The first menu lets you select the type of
- overlay: form, rubber stamp, border, or personal. For this menu
- and any other Over_LAZ menu, press the highlighted number or
- letter to select an entry. DO NOT PRESS THE ENTER KEY AFTER
- SELECTING AN OPTION. (If you do, a blank line will added to your
- document). You can also press the <Esc> (escape) key to move
- back one menu level. The various Over_LAZ overlay files
- available are described in detail in the file OVERLAZ.DOC.
-
- If you select 1 or f for Form, the second menu which appears will
- ask for the form style. Select 'solid' to get the normal black
- character letterhead forms (such as IOMEMO.HP) or 'outline' to
- get the outline character letterhead forms (such as IOMEMO2.HP).
- After selecting the style, the menu will present a list of the
- available forms. Select the highlighted letter or number to
- insert in the document. 6 or M is always reserved for MORE to
- advance to the next page of the list. MORE on the last page will
- bring you back to the first page.
-
- Select 'custom' from the FORM STYLE menu if you wish to enter an
- Over_LAZ file name directly without choosing it from the menu.
- You will be prompted to enter an 8 character file name. Do not
- enter the .HP extension. This will be added automatically by the

- document, press the highlighted letter or number key. Press 6 or
- M to get the next page of the list, or <Esc> to go back one
- level.
-
- Selecting 3 or B from the main Over_LAZ menu will display the
- BORDER SIZE submenu. Over_LAZ is supplied with page borders
- sized for normal letter (8.5" x 11") paper in portrait and
- landscape modes as well as legal sized (8.5" x 14") paper in both
- orientations. Select the desired border size to match the
- current page size and orientation. Select the desired border
- style.
-
- Select 4 or P from the main Over_LAZ menu for the PERSONAL menu.
- This sub menu lets you choose one of 4 personal overlays, or
- enter an Over_LAZ file name directly. 'Letter 1' will insert the
- file LETTER1.HP; Letter 2 - LETTER2.HP; Personal 1 - PER1.HP and
- Personal 2 - PER2.HP. To make your own personalized list, you
- can rename any of the standard Over_LAZ files to these names, or
- you can use it to access the custom overlay or letterhead we
- create for you when you register your copy of Over_LAZ.
-
- If you change your mind or make a mistake while entering a file

- WORDPERFECT 6.0 FOR WINDOWS
-
- INSTALLING Over_LAZ
-
- With one important limitation, Over_LAZ can be used with
- WordPerfect v6.0 for Windows:
-
- * * * *
-
- IN ORDER TO USE Over_LAZ WITH WORDPERFECT FOR WINDOWS, YOU
- MUST USE THE WORDPERFECT PRINTER DRIVER. YOU CANNOT USE THE
- STANDARD WINDOWS PRINTER DRIVERS BECAUSE THEY DO NOT
- PROPERLY SUPPORT DIRECT PRINTER SETUP COMMANDS FROM
- WORDPERFECT. (ALTHOUGH THE WP6WIN DOCUMENTATION SAYS IT
- WILL SUPPORT THIS FEATURE WITH STANDARD WINDOWS PRINTER
- DRIVERS, MOST USERS REPORT THAT THIS FEATURE DOES NOT WORK
- PROPERLY IN THE EARLY RELEASES.)
-
- * * * *
-
- To install Over_LAZ in WordPerfect 6 for Windows, from the main
- WPWIN editing screen click the mouse pointer on:
-
- FILE
- SELECT PRINTER (See above warning - make sure the
- WordPerfect printer driver is
- currently selected.)
- SETUP
- PATH FOR DOWNLOADABLE FONTS AND PRINTER
- COMMANDS
-
- A prompt will be displayed in the edit box for "Path for
- downloadable ...". Type in the path (drive and directory) where
- you have stored your Over_LAZ files, such as C:\OVER4. (If you
- use WordPerfect downloadable fonts, do not change the path which
- is displayed in the edit box. Instead, copy the Over_LAZ files
- to the same directory).
-
- After typing in the path information, click on OK or CLOSE to
- close each window in sequence (i.e. SETUP, SELECT PRINTER) and
- return to the main editing screen.
-
- The SETUP dialog box is different for the WordPerfect and Windows
- printer drivers. If you are using a Windows printer driver, the
- 'Path for Downloadable fonts ...' option will not appear in the
- SETUP dialog box.
-
- Commands inserted into the body of a document will only appear on
- that page. To insert an overlay on every page, the command must

- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- WORDSTAR (pre version 6), WS PROFESSIONAL
-
- DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ
-
- Prior to version 6, WordStar could only send simple printer
- commands. Therefore, the overlay files (*.HP) must be downloaded
- to the printer as printer macro files prior to being used in a
- document. Downloading .HP files is done with the OVL.EXE utility
- and can be done automatically by inserting the appropriate
- command lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or startup batch file for
- WordStar. A typical batch file to start WordStar might look
- like:
-
- OVL /D
- WS
- OVL /R
-
- The first line downloads the pre-selected overlays to the
- printer. The second line runs WordStar, and the last line
- removes the overlays and resets the printer. Complete
- instructions are given starting on page 63 in the section
- "DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ AS PRINTER MACROS".
-
-
- INSERTING Over_LAZ INTO DOCUMENT
-
- All commands to use an overlay in a WordStar document must be
- inserted into the document manually using custom print controls.
- The generic command sequence to define a custom print control in
- a dot command is:
-
- .X* 1B 26 66 ## ## ## 79 33 58
-
- where * is one of E, Q, R, or W, depending on which custom print
- control is to be defined, and ## ## ## is the hexadecimal ASCII
- codes for the macro ID number of the overlay you wish to add to
- your document. For example:
-
- .XQ 1B 26 66 31 30 31 79 33 58
-
- will define the AGEN.HP overlay (macro ID # 101) as custom print
- control Q, assuming that it has been downloaded to the printer.
- If the file AGEN.HP had not been downloaded, nothing will happen
- when you use the print control (but your text will still print
- out as normal). Note that normally the custom print control must
- be defined in each document. This gives you the flexibility to
- define different custom controls for different documents. With
- some versions of WordStar, you can also define default printer
- controls by modifying the command strings in the printer driver
-
- 29
-
-
-
- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- file. (Do not attempt to change the printer driver file unless
- you are thoroughly familiar with how the printer driver
- functions!)
-
- To insert a custom print control into a document, the command is:
-
- <Control> P*
-
- where * is the letter of the custom print control to be used (E,
- Q, R, or W). For example, to insert the AGEN.HP print control
- defined in the above example as custom control Q, type:
-
- <Control> PQ
-
- (i.e. hold down the <Control> or <Ctrl> key, then press P
- followed by Q. In most documentation, this key sequence is also
- represented by ^PQ). The command sequence can be inserted on a
- single page, or in a header or footer for printing on every page.
- Multiple overlays can be used on a single page or different ones
- on different pages, by defining (or re-defining) each of the
- custom print controls.
-
- A list of macro ID numbers can be printed by choosing the PRINT
- option from the main menu of the OVL.EXE program. You can print
- out a complete list, or just the list for the downloaded files.
- The list will contain five sets of values (in different formats)
- for each overlay. For WordStar, use the command sequence listed
- under the column marked HEX.
-
- Note that the overlay will not appear on the screen (other than a
- literal printing of the command sequence). It will only appear
- on the document when it is printed.

- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- WORDSTAR (v6 or later)
-
- WordStar v6 or later can download printer command files (such as
- Over_LAZ .HP files) to the printer as part of a print job.
- Overlays are added to documents using the WordStar 'custom print
- control' feature. Overlays can be inserted at any point in the
- document, and can also be included in headers and footers to
- allow printing on every page in a multi-page document. Over_LAZ
- images will not be shown in the on-screen print preview. An HP
- LaserJet compatible printer driver (.PDF file) must be selected
- for printing.
-
- To access the print control menu, press <Control> P (hold down
- the <Control> or <Ctrl> key, then press the P key). Over_LAZ
- files are added as a 'one time custom print control'. Press the
- ! key to access the custom print control dialog box. The dialog
- box can be accessed directly by pressing <Control>P! quickly
- without waiting for the print control menu to appear. (In most
- documentation, this key sequence is also shown as ^P!).
-
- The custom print control dialog box will prompt you to enter
- three items. The first is labelled "Characters to send to the
- printer". On this line, enter the character sequence %F followed
- by the full path name of the Over_LAZ file to be inserted,
- enclosed in double quotes. (Note that the F must be an uppercase
- F. It cannot be a lowercase f). If no path or drive is
- specified with the file name, the current default directory
- and/or drive are assumed. For example, %F"C:\OVER4\IOMEMO.HP"
- will insert the file IOMEMO.HP, located in directory \OVER4 on
- drive C: and %F"DRAFT.HP" will insert the file DRAFT.HP located
- in the current default drive and directory. The remaining two
- items in the dialog box (Characters to display and Inches to
- account for) should be left blank.
-
- To keep things simple in the long run, it is a good idea to put
- all of your Over_LAZ .HP files in a single directory and use the
- full path name in the %F command. ^P! commands should be
- inserted on separate blank lines, preferably near the top of a
- page. More than one ^P! can appear on a single line, if
- combinations of overlays are used. Commands inserted into the
- body of a document will only appear on that page. To insert an
- overlay on every page, the ^P! command must be placed in either a
- header or footer dot command (.he, .h1, .h2, .h3, .fo, .f1, .f2,
- or .f3). For example, .h1^P!%F"C:\OVER4\IOMEMO.HP" will place
- the overlay in the first line of a header.
-
- The custom print control method using the .X* dot commands and
- ^P* custom print control (described on page 29 for older versions
- of WordStar) will also work with newer releases of WordStar.

- LOTUS AMI PRO
-
- DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ
-
- Lotus Ami Pro for Windows can only send simple printer commands.
- Therefore, the overlay files (*.HP) must be downloaded to the
- printer as printer macro files prior to being used in a document.
- Downloading .HP files is done with the OVL.EXE utility (or
- OVLWIN.EXE in Windows 3.x, or through the Over_LAZ Ami Pro menu
- macro) and can be done automatically by inserting the appropriate
- command lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Complete instructions are
- given starting on page 63 in the section "DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ AS
- PRINTER MACROS".
-
- More than one overlay can appear on a single page, and different
- pages can have different overlays. Commands inserted into the
- body of a document will only appear on that page. To insert an
- overlay on every page, the command must be placed in either a
- header or footer.
-
-
- INSTALLING THE Over_LAZ AMI PRO MENU MACRO
-
- Release 4 of Over_LAZ HP is provided with an Ami Pro macro which
- displays a menu to greatly simplify the task of inserting an
- overlay into a document.
-
- To install the Ami Pro macro, copy the file OVERLAZ.SMM to your
- Ami Pro macros directory and the file OVERLAZ.BMP to your Ami Pro
- icon directory. If you do not know what your macro or icon
- directories are, choose:
-
- TOOLS
- USER SETUP
- PATHS
-
- from the Ami Pro main menu. The directories will be displayed in
- the 'Default Paths' dialog box.
-
- Next choose:
-
- TOOLS
- MACRO
- PLAYBACK
-
- then select OVERLAZ.SMM. The first time the Ami Pro macro is
- run, it will ask you to enter the directory names for the
- OVLWIN.EXE and OVL.TAG and *.HP files, and select whether you
- want to assign the macro to the tool bar, 'Tools' menu, and/or a
-
- 32

- function key combination. (Normally the directories will both be
- the same, such as C:\OVER4, but they do not have to be if you
- have the different files stored in in different loactions).
- These directories are saved in the [OVL] section of your WIN.INI
- file. The assignment to the tools menu will be automatic (as
- OVERLAZ...). The function key assignment will open a second
- dialogbox which lets you choose F1 to F12, with any combination
- of <Shift>, <Control> and <Alt>.
-
- The tool bar assignment option will open the Ami Pro Tool Bar
- Edit dialog box. You must edit the tool bar manually. If you
- have copied the OVERLAZ.BMP file to your Ami Pro ICONS directory,
- the Over_LAZ icon (a 'rubber stamp' on a yellow background) will
- be the last one in the list of AVAILABLE ICONS on the left.
- Click on the icon and drag it over to the desired location on the
- TOOL BAR (on the right). Type in OVERLAZ.SMM for the macro to
- run, then press OK.
-
- Once the installation is complete, the macro will activate the
- OVLWIN program. If you do not wish to insert an overlay command
- at this time, press the CANCEL button to return to Ami Pro.
-
-
- USING THE Over_LAZ AMI PRO MENU MACRO
-
- The Ami Pro menu macro is a short program which activates the
- OVLWIN.EXE program, then automatically inserts the proper 'power
- field' codes for the chosen overlay file into the document. The
- OVLWIN.EXE program is also used by the menu macro for Microsoft
- Word for Windows. Complete instructions for using OVLWIN.EXE can
- be found on page 68.
-
- To run the Over_LAZ menu macro, choose the macro from the TOOLS
- menu, smart icon, or key combination. If you have not installed
- the Over_LAZ macro as a menu item, key, or smart icon, you can
- run it from the main Ami Pro menu with:
-
- TOOLS
- MACRO
- PLAYBACK
-
- then select OVERLAZ.SMM from the list box.
-
- To insert an Over_LAZ file into an Ami Pro document, run the
- OVERLAZ macro. Select the desired overlay from either the 'Quick
- List' (list of overlays that have been downloaded to the
- printer), or from the individual menus for forms, stamps,
- borders, or custom overlays. If you change your mind before
- inserting the command, just press the "CANCEL" button on the

- Microsoft Word (v4.x or later for DOS) can only send simple
- printer commands. Therefore, the overlay files (*.HP) must be

- used in a document. Downloading .HP files is done with the
- OVL.EXE utility and can be done automatically by inserting the

-
- OVL /D
- WORD
- OVL /R
-
- The first line downloads the pre-selected overlays to the
- printer. The second line runs Word, and the last line removes

-
-
- INSERTING Over_LAZ INTO DOCUMENT
-
- Microsoft Word for DOS has a relatively simple macro language.
- Thus all commands to print an overlay must be inserted into the
- document manually. The generic command sequence is:
-
- <Esc>&f###y3X
-
- where <Esc> is the 'escape' character (ASCII code decimal 27),
- and ### is the macro ID number of the overlay you wish to add to
- your document. To input the <Esc> character with Word, hold down
- the <Alt> key, then press 0 2 7 on the numeric keypad and release
- the <Alt> key. The character will appear on the screen as a left
- pointing arrow '<-'. Type in the remainder of the command
- sequence normally. For example:
-
- <Esc>&f101y3X
-
- will activate the AGEN.HP overlay, assuming that it has been
- downloaded to the printer. If the file AGEN.HP had not been
- downloaded, nothing will happen when you insert the above command
- (but your text will still print out as normal).
-
- Note that the command is case sensitive (e.g., you must use f and
- not F, y not Y, numeral zero not letter o, and X not x). The

- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- MICROSOFT WORD (for WINDOWS)
-
- DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ
-
- Word for Windows can only send simple printer commands.
- Therefore, the overlay files (*.HP) must be downloaded to the
- printer as printer macro files prior to being used in a document.
- Downloading .HP files is done with the OVL.EXE utility (or OVLWIN
- in Windows 3.x, or through the Over_LAZ Word for Windows menu
- macro) and can be done automatically by inserting the appropriate
- command lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Complete instructions are
- given starting on page 63 in the section "DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ AS
- PRINTER MACROS".
-
- Release 4 of Over_LAZ HP is provided with a Word for Windows
- macro which displays a menu to greatly simplify the task of
- inserting an overlay into a document.
-
-
- INSTALLING THE Over_LAZ WORD FOR WINDOWS MENU MACRO
-
- Word for Windows stores macros in document 'templates' which it
- associates with each document. In order for a macro to be usable
- in all documents it has to be saved as a 'global' macro in the
- default template file (NORMAL.DOT). The installation procedure
- for the Over_LAZ macro has been automated through the use of
- another macro. Two versions of the installation routine are
- provided: one for Word 1.x and a one for Word v2.x or later.
- (The Over_LAZ menu macro is the same for all versions of Word.
- Only the installation procedure is different.)
-
-
- WORD v1.x
-
- Unfortunately, earlier versions of Word for Windows (v 1.x) had a
- fairly cumbersome procedure for transferring a 'template' macro
- to the NORMAL.DOT file.
-
- To install the Over_LAZ macro for Word v1.x, copy the
- OVERWRD1.DOC file to your normal Word document directory. (Note
- that this file is in Word for Windows v1.x document format, not
- straight ASCII text like the rest of the .DOC files on this
- disk). Run Word for Windows, and open the OVERWRD1.DOC as a
- document. OVERWRD1.DOC contains an AUTOOPEN macro, which runs
- automatically when you open the file, and copies the macro to the
- NORMAL.DOT global template. The installation macro will
- optionally assign the OVERLAZ macro to a Word menu for easy
- access (under 'Utilities' for Word 1.x or 'Tools' for Word 2.x.
- If you have redefined the default Word menus or menu names, you
-
- 37
-
-
-
- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- may have to assign the OVERLAZ macro manually). You can also
- assign the macro to a key. For Word 1.x, use:
-
- UTILITIES
- MACRO ASSIGN TO KEY
-
-
- During the installation process, you will be asked to enter the
- name of the directory where the OVLWIN.EXE program is located,
- and the directory where the OVL.TAG file (and all of the *.HP
- files) is located. Normally these will be the same, but they do
- not have to be. The *.HP files must be located in the same
- directory as the OVL.TAG file. The directory names are saved in
- a section of the WIN.INI file called "OVL", along with other data
- needed by OVLWIN. (The WIN.INI is also used by OVLWIN to return
- data to Word).
-
- Once the OVERLAZ macro has been installed, you can delete the
- OVERWRD1.DOC file from your Word document directory.
-
- * * * *
-
- IF YOU ARE USING WORD VERSION 1.X, MAKE SURE ALL OTHER
- EDITING WINDOWS ARE CLOSED FIRST BEFORE OPENING
- OVERWRD1.DOC.
-
- * * * *
-
-
- WORD 2.x or later
-
- To install the Over_LAZ macro for Word v2.x, copy the
- OVERWRD2.DOC file to your normal Word document directory. (Note
- that this file is in Word for Windows v2.x document format, not
- straight ASCII text like the rest of the .DOC files on this
- disk). Run Word for Windows, and open the OVERWRD2.DOC as a
- document. OVERWRD2.DOC contains an AUTOOPEN macro, which runs
- automatically when you open the file, and copies the macro to the
- NORMAL.DOT global template. The installation macro will
- optionally assign the OVERLAZ macro to the Word 'Tools' menu for
- easy access. (If you have redefined the default Word menus or
- menu names, you may have to assign the OVERLAZ macro manually).
- You can also assign the macro to a key:
-
- TOOLS
- OPTIONS
- KEYBOARD
-
- With Word 2.x or later, you can also assign the macro to an icon

-
- Once the OVERLAZ macro has been installed, you can delete the
- OVERWRD2.DOC file from your Word document directory.
-
-
-
- USING THE Over_LAZ WORD FOR WINDOWS MENU MACRO
-
- The Word for Windows menu macro is a short Word BASIC program
- which activates the OVLWIN.EXE program, then automatically
- inserts the proper control codes for the chosen overlay file into
- the document. The OVLWIN.EXE program is also used by the menu
- macro for Lotus Ami Pro. Complete instructions for using
- OVLWIN.EXE can be found on page 68.
-
- To insert an Over_LAZ file into a Word for Windows document, run
- the OVERLAZ macro. Select the desired overlay from either the
- 'Quick List' (list of overlays that have been downloaded to the
- printer), or from the individual menus for forms, stamps,
- borders, or custom overlays. If you change your mind before
- inserting the command, just press the "CANCEL" button on the
- OVLWIN menu. If you change your mind after inserting the
- command, highlight the entire field command sequence in the Word
- document, including the { and } symbols (such as {Print
- 27"&f101y3X"} ), and press the <Delete> key on the keyboard.
-
- The command sequence can be inserted on a single page, or in a
- header or footer for printing on every page. Multiple overlays
- can be used on a single page or different ones on different
- pages. Note that the overlay will not appear on the screen
- (other than a literal printing of the command sequence, if the
- View Fields option is turned on). It will only appear on the
- document when it is printed.

-
- MANUALLY INSERTING Over_LAZ INTO DOCUMENT
-
- The printer command sequence to use an overlay printer macro is
- added to the document with a "FIELD" command, specifying a
- printer command field. With Word, this is done with the menu
- sequence:
-
- INSERT
- FIELD
-
- Select "Print" from the 'Insert Field Type' list box, then enter
- the printer code string in the 'Field Code' edit box:
-
- 27"&f###y3X"
-
- where ### is the ID number of the overlay, such as 101. Note
- that the 27 (the ASCII <Escape> code) is outside of the quote
- marks. If you have 'View Fields' turned on, you will see a code
- similar to:
-
- {Print 27"&f101y3X"}
-
- inserted into the text. A list of ID numbers can be printed by
- choosing the PRINT option from the main menu of the OVL.EXE
- program (or the OVLWIN program when operated in stand alone
- mode). You can print out a complete list, or just the list for
- the downloaded files. The list will contain five sets of values
- (in different formats) for each overlay. For Word for Windows,
- use the command sequence listed under the column marked ASCII,
- but don't forget to include the quote marks as shown above. If
- you change your mind after inserting the command, highlight the
- entire field command sequence in the Word document, including the
- { and } symbols (such as {Print 27"&f101y3X"} ), then press the

- PC-WRITE
-
- PC-Write is a shareware word processing program produced by
- QuickSoft. No special installation procedure is required to use
- Over_LAZ with PC-Write. Overlays are added using the 'include
- unprocessed file' dot command. Overlays can be inserted at any
- point in the document, but they cannot be included in headers and
- footers for printing on every page in a multi-page document. To
- print on every page, a separate command must be included on each
- page. An HP LaserJet compatible printer driver (.PDF file) must
- be selected for printing.
-
- To insert an Over_LAZ file into a PC-Write document, the .TI
- command is used. On a blank line, press <Alt>-G (hold down the
- ALT key, then press the G key. This is the standard prefix for
- PC-Write dot commands). Type the command .TI: followed by the
- path and file name of the Over_LAZ file to be included. For
- example, <Alt>-G.TI:C:\OVER4\IOMEMO.HP will insert the IOMEMO.HP
- file located in C:\OVER4 into the current document.

-
-
- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- If the drive and/or path are not specified, PC-Write will assume
- the current default drive/path. For example, <Alt>-G.TI:DRAFT.HP
- will insert the file DRAFT.HP from the current default drive and
- directory.
-
- To keep things simple in the long run, it is a good idea to put
- all of your Over_LAZ .HP files in a single directory and use the
- full path name in the .TI command.
-
- .TI commands should be inserted on separate blank lines,
- preferably near the top of a page. More than one .TI can appear
- on a single page, if combinations of overlays are used, but each
- must be on a separate line. Commands inserted into the body of a
- document will only appear on that page. To insert an overlay on
- every page, the .TI command must be placed specifically on each
- page. Always check the locations of the commands after making
- any changes to the document to ensure that the command has not
- been pushed to a different page.

-
- Q-Edit is a shareware text editing program produced by SemWare.
- Printer commands can be inserted into Q-Edit documents with the

-
- <Alt> 027
-
- on the numeric keypad (you cannot use the number keys at the top
- of the normal alphabetic keys), followed by the remainder of the

- SPREADSHEETS
-
- A number of spreadsheet programs also support the use of Over_LAZ
- to varying degrees. All rely on embedded printer commands or
- printer setup strings, and require that the Over_LAZ first be
- downloaded to the printer as printer macros. Complete
- instructions for selecting and downloading overlay files are
- given starting on page 63 in the section "DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ AS
- PRINTER MACROS". Many other spreadsheet programs, such as 'As
- Easy As', follow the Lotus 1-2-3 convention for printer setup
- strings and embedded printer commands. (If your favourite
- spreadsheet program is not listed here, but you think it can work
- with Over_LAZ, send us the details and we will include the
- instructions in later releases.)

- LOTUS 1-2-3
-
- Printer commands can be inserted either as setup strings, or as
- embedded printer commands. Lotus 1-2-3 has a very simple macro
- language. Thus all commands to print an overlay must be inserted
- into the document manually. The generic command sequence is:
-
- \027&f###y3X
-
- where ### is the macro ID number of the overlay you wish to add

-
- \027&f101y3X

- BORLAND QUATTRO PRO
-
- Quattro Pro supports two printing modes: Draft print mode and
- Graphics mode. (The printing mode is selected from the Print
- Destination menu selection). Draft mode relies on default built
- in printer fonts (it will give a simple print out without
- enhancements such as font changes and graphics, while Graphics
- print mode uses Quattro Pro soft fonts and can scale a
- spreadsheet to fit a page ("Print to Fit"). Quattro Pro can send
- embedded printer commands in either mode (although the Quattro
- Pro documentation states that the process only works in draft
- mode).
-
- Draft Mode
-
- Printer commands can be inserted either as setup strings, or as
- embedded printer commands. Quattro Pro has a very simple macro
- language. Thus all commands to print an overlay must be inserted
- into the document manually. The generic command sequence is:

- by <Shift> \ and is sometimes referred to as the DOS 'pipe'
- character.) For more information, consult your Quattro Pro
- manual under the heading "Embedded Printer Command Strings".
-
- The second way to embed printer commands in a Quattro Pro
- spreadsheet is using the @CHAR function, as outlined below.
- Using the @CHAR function allows commands to be embedded anywhere
- in the spreadsheet (i.e. you do not need a special blank row) and
- it also works in graphical output (WYSIWYG) mode.
-
-
- Graphics Printer Mode
-
- Setup strings and normal embedded printer commands will not work
- in graphics printer mode. However, printer commands can be
- embedded in Quattro Pro spreadsheet files using the @CHAR
- function. The syntax is:
-
- @CHAR(27)&"&f###y3X"
-
- where ### is the macro ID number of the overlay you wish to add
- to your document. Note the & symbol right after the @CHAR(27).
- This tells Quattro Pro that the remainder of the line belongs to
- the same command string. Note also that quote marks are required
- around the remainder of the command string. For example:
-
- @CHAR(27)&"&f101y3X".
-
- In text display mode, the screen will show a left pointing arrow
- for the @CHAR(27), followed by the remainder of the string,
- without the first & or the quote marks:
-
- <-&f101y3X
-
- 55
-
-
-
- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- In WYSIWYG display mode, the @CHAR(27) appears on the screen as a

-
- The second part of the embedded command process (required for
- printing in Quattro Pro graphics printer mode) is to select a
- built in printer font for the cell containing the command.
-
- * * * *
-
- THE PROCESS WILL NOT WORK IF YOU DO NOT SELECT A BUILT
- IN PRINTER FONT FOR THE CELL WHICH CONTAINS THE
- EMBEDDED COMMAND.
- * * * *
-
- To select a font, use:
-
- / S F
-
- for (menu) Style Font. Next select Laserjet courier (10 point or
- 12 point). If this font does not appear in your font list, you
- will have to add it with the Edit font selection. (Make sure you
- pick a Laserjet courier font (any character set)! The process
- does not work properly with the Quattro Pro soft fonts.)
- Finally, select the range to format (normally just the cell
- containing the printer command).

-
- DATABASE PROGRAMS
-
- Over_LAZ files can be used with dBase, PC-FOCUS, Fox Pro, Clipper
- and most other database programs. The overlay will appear only
- on the printed copy and will not be shown on the screen.
-
- For dBase and similar software (referred to below as xBase), the
- simplest method is to use the RUN (or !) command to copy the file
- to the printer. This command can be used either from the xBase
- command prompt, or within a xBase program.
-
- For example, RUN COPY C:\OVER4\DRAFT.HP LPT1: will copy the file
- DRAFT.HP directly to the printer. (The 'TYPE filename TO
- PRINTER' command cannot be used for this purpose because it will
- filter and distort the binary data in the Over_LAZ file).
-
- Other database programs use similar techniques to execute an
- external DOS command.
-
- For PC-FOCUS, the equivalent command is:
- DOS COPY C:\OVER4\DRAFT.HP LPT1:
-
- When using the Over_LAZ technique with a database printout, the
- overlay should be printed before printing the data. If the
- overlay is required on each page of a multi page printout, it
- must be specifically copied to the printer for each page. More
- than one overlay may be used on a page, and different overlays
- can be used on each page of a multi page printout.
-
- Over_LAZ can also be added using printer macros, if the files
- have been previously downloaded. Complete instructions for
- selecting and downloading overlay files are given starting on
- page 63 in the section "DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ AS PRINTER MACROS".
-
- The procedure for inserting printer macro overlays into xBase
- type report programs is:
-
- SET TALK OFF
- SET PRINT ON
- ?? CHR(27)+"&f###y3X"
- SET PRINT OFF
-
- where ### is the macro ID number of the desired overlay. Note
- that the command is case sensitive (e.g., you must use f and not
- F, y not Y and X not x). Multiple overlays can be used on a
- single page or different ones on different pages.
-
- A list of macro ID numbers can be printed by choosing the PRINT
- option from the main menu of the OVL.EXE program. You can print
-
- 57
-
-
-

- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- out a complete list, or just the list for the downloaded files.
- The list will contain five sets of values (in different formats)
- for each overlay. For xBase and similar software, use the
- command sequence listed under the column marked ASCII, but ignore
- the initial <- character.
-
- For more information on embedding printer commands in your
- particular xBase software, consult your database software manual.

- OTHER APPLICATIONS
-
- The Over_LAZ files may be used with other word processing
- programs and custom applications. If you find Over_LAZ
- compatible with other commercial or shareware applications, write
- to us with the details.
-
- In order to use Over_LAZ, the word processing program or other
- application must be able to embed the contents of a disk file,
- without changing or re-formatting, in the document when printing,
- or be able to copy a file to the printer before it prints its own
- output. This can be done either by chained printing (i.e. the
- ability to retrieve and print a disk file while in the midst of
- printing the document, but ONLY IF THE PROGRAM DOES NOT RE-FORMAT
- THE CHAINED FILE BEFORE PRINTING IT), or if the program supports
- it, direct downloading of the Over_LAZ file to the printer during
- the printing process.
-
- The procedure for chain printing and/or embedding printer
- commands varies greatly for different word processing programs.
- We suggest that you consult the appropriate sections of your
- software manual.
-
- Over_LAZ files can be printed from DOS batch files by adding a
- line similar to: COPY filename.HP LPT1: to the batch file.
-
- When using Over_LAZ with your own applications written in a high
- level language such as C or BASIC, you must read the Over_LAZ
- file from disk as a BINARY file and print it as a binary file.
- If you do not treat it as a binary file, some languages, such as
- BASIC will automatically add line feeds and carriage returns to
- various parts of the file with disastrous consequences (i.e. the
- Over_LAZ file will not print correctly). With most versions of
- Microsoft (and compatible) BASICs, the procedure would be similar
- to:
-
- OPEN "LPT1:BIN" FOR OUTPUT AS #1 ' THE BIN IS VERY IMPORTANT
- WIDTH #1,255 ' TURNS OFF THE BASIC LINEWRAP
- OPEN "DRAFT.HP" FOR BINARY AS #2 ' FILE TO READ
- X$=INPUT$(LOF(2),2) ' READ FILE
- PRINT #1,X$; ' PRINT FILE
- CLOSE 1 ' CLOSE FILE AND PRINTER
- CLOSE 2
-
- Note that for overlay files longer than the maximum BASIC string
- length (normally 32k bytes), you will have to read and print the
- file in smaller chunks. In addition, program line numbers may be
- required with some versions of BASIC.

- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- USING Over_LAZ ON A NETWORK
-
- General
-
- Local Area Networks (or LANs) are quite common in most business
- environments. Among other things, LANs let users share a few
- printers amongst many workstations. The network print server
- normally runs software which spools and queues print jobs, resets
- the printer and configures it for each print job.
-
- A Novell LAN has two basic printer modes: text and bytestream.
- In bytestream mode, all data received from a user is passed
- directly to the printer. In TEXT mode, the data is filtered
- first. The filtering process converts TAB characters (ASCII code
- 9) to a series of spaces. For straight text, this is normally
- OK. However, Over_LAZ contain bit-mapped graphic images. If the
- network printing software is configured for TEXT mode, the
- graphics may become scrambled by the well meaning print server
- which will convert any ASCII 9's to spaces. The scrambling
- effect will only occur if the graphics data happens to contain an
- ASCII 9.
-
- If you find that some of the Over_LAZ files are not printing
- correctly on your LAN, ask your LAN administrator to convert your
- default printing configuration from TEXT to BYTESTREAM mode. For
- example, on a Novell network, this is done by specifying NT (for
- no tabs) on the CAPTURE options.
-
- When using the downloaded printer macro overlay method, LAN
- administrators should control who has rights to download the
- macros and/or edit the ID numbers in the .TAG file. Allowing
- blanket use of downloading can quickly clog the printer memory.
- Allowing users to assign their own ID numbers may lead to
- conflicts when several users have assigned the same number to a
- different macro. (In this case, the previously downloaded macros
- with a given ID number will be replaced by the new one each time
- someone downloads a macro with a duplicate ID). A network user
- station version OVLWIN is included in the LAN/Site license
- package of Over_LAZ. This version does not allow users to
- download or edit .HP files (it is used strictly as a menu for the
- Word for Windows and Ami Pro macros).
-
- In order to save disk storage space, the .HP files can located in
- a shared directory.

- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- For WordPerfect Users
-
- When Using Over_LAZ with WordPerfect 5.0 or later on a network,
- the *.HP files should be in a shared directory on the file
- server. In addition, each user must have his/her "Path for
- downloadable fonts and printer command files" set up individually
- to point to the shared directory.
-
- If individual single user copies are used instead of network
- copies of WordPerfect, the *.HP files can still be in a shared
- directory. Again, each user must be set up individually.

- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- DOWNLOADING Over_LAZ AS PRINTER MACROS
-
- OVL for DOS
-
- OVL is a stand-alone program for DOS which lets you create and
- edit lists of overlays (.TAG files), download .HP files to the
- printer as printer macros, unload printer macros, and print lists
- of printer command codes required to access the downloaded
- macros. OVL operates in two modes: command line and menu.
-
- * * * *
-
- ALL OVL PRINT AND DOWNLOAD ROUTINES ASSUME THAT THE
- RECEIVING PRINTER IS HP LASERJET COMPATIBLE. DO NOT
- ATTEMPT TO PRINT ANYTHING FROM OVL TO A NON HP
- COMPATIBLE PRINTER. PRINTING OR DOWNLOADING TO A NON
- HP COMPATIBLE PRINTER WILL PRODUCE UNPREDICTABLE
- RESULTS.
-
- * * * *
-
- Command Line Mode
-
- OVL command line mode allows access to the download and printer
- reset functions from the DOS command line. This allows these
- functions to be performed automatically from within a DOS batch
- file, such as the AUTOEXEC.BAT startup file.
-
- The command line syntax is:
-
- OVL /D /T:{filename} /R"
-
- where, /D = download tagged macros from tag file directly to
- printer.
-
- /T: = specify tag filename to download from or to use
- with tag editor mode, e.g. /T:LIST2.TAG will use
- the tag file LIST2.TAG. If no /T: is specified,
- the default file named in the OVL.CFG file is
- used.
-
- /R = reset printer (unload previously downloaded
- macros). If /R is used alone, all macros in
- printer RAM will be unloaded. If /T: is also
- specified, only the tagged macros will be
- unloaded.
-
- All parameters are optional. For example,
-
-
- 63
-
-
-
- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- OVL /D
-
- will automatically download the tagged files in the default .TAG
- file (normally OVL.TAG) to the default printer. Both the default
- .TAG file and printer can be changed using the 'Configure' option
- from the OVL main menu.
-
- To automatically download files to the printer each time you
- start up your computer, insert the OVL /D command in your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file. To download files on an 'as required' basis
- for a given application, you can create a short batch file such
- as:
-
- OVL /D
- WORD
- OVL /R
-
- The first line downloads the files, the second line launches your
- application (Microsoft Word for DOS in this case) and the third
- line removes the macros from the printer memory.

- with different overlays in each, or different ones tagged for
- download (for example if you use certain overlays with a
- particular application, you can create a .TAG file with just
- those records in it). To open an existing .TAG file, select:
-
- FILE
- OPEN
-
- from the main OVLWIN menu. Select the file you wish to open from
- the list box (only .TAG files will be listed), then press the
- OPEN button. You can change the directory by clicking on the
- directory drop down list box. If you want to set the new
- directory and file name as the default, check the 'save as
- default' box. (Both the directory and file name will saved be
- saved in the WIN.INI file if the 'save as default' box is
- checked). Press CANCEL if you do not wish to open a new file.
-
- To create a new .TAG file, or to edit the contents of a .TAG
- file, start OVLWIN in stand alone mode, as described on page 68.
-
- OVLWIN has a built in help facility. To access the OVLWIN help
- screens, select:
-
- HELP
-
- from the main OVLWIN menu. Select the desired help screen from
- the HELP dropdown sub menu topic list. Once a help screen is
- displayed, you can page back and forth through all help screens
- by pressing the PREV and NEXT buttons. Press OK to return to the
- main OVLWIN screen.
-
- To access help from the other dialog boxes (like the 'Download'
- dialog), press the HELP button. The appropriate help screen will
- be displayed. You can then use PREV and NEXT to access other

-
-
- Using OVLWIN In Your Own Windows Applcations
-
- OVLWIN can be used in other Windows 3.x applications that support
- embedded printer commands, provided that the macro language for
- that application can read and write information in the WIN.INI
- file and can launch an external Windows program (OVLWIN.EXE).
- The command line to start OVLWIN in menu macro mode is:
-
- OVLWIN *
-
- If the * parameter is not included, OVLWIN will start up in
- stand-alone mode.
-
- OVLWIN communicates with the calling application through the
- WIN.INI file. A section labelled "OVL" will be created in the
- WIN.INI with the following fields:
-
- OVLDir is the directory that contains the .TAG and .HP
- files.
-
- OVLPath is the directory that contains the OVLWIN.EXE file
- (normally the same as OVLDir). This can be used
- by the calling application to locate the OVLWIN
- program.
-
- App is the name of the calling application:
- WW = Word for Windows
- AP = Ami Pro
-
- OVLTag is the name of the current .TAG file.
-
- ID is the ID number of the selected overlay, or -1 if
- none was selected (returned to the calling
- application by OVLWIN for use by Word and Ami
- Pro).
-
- Fname is the file name of the selected overlay (returned
- to the calling application by OVLWIN for use by
- the calling application).
-
-
- When developing your own macro routines for other applications,
- it is up to your macro to read the returned values from the
- WIN.INI file and insert the appropriate command codes in your
- application. The generic command string to activate a downloaded
- macro in the printer is:

-
- <Esc>&f###y3X
-
- where <Esc> is the ASCII code 27 (decimal) escape character, and
- ### is the overlay macro ID number in ASCII string format. Note
- that with many applications, you cannot enter an ASCII 27 <Esc>
- character directly from the keyboard, because the <Esc> key is
- often used as a cancel key (especially for Windows applications).

-
- TIPS AND HINTS
-
- For best results in using Over_LAZ, consider the following:
-
- o All overlays files are designed to work with standard 8-1/2"
- x 11" letter sized paper. The letterhead and rubber stamp
- type overlays will also work acceptably with metric A4 sized
- paper. The border overlays have been designed to work for
- letter, or legal in portrait or landscape mode, depending on
- the file name.
-
- o The letterhead (form) overlays are designed to be used in
- portrait mode only (i.e. like a regular typed letter with
- the long edge of the paper along the side and the short edge
- across the top). A top margin of at least 1.25 inches is
- required in order to provide sufficient room at the top of
- the page to print the letterhead.
-
- o The rubber stamp overlays are designed to be used in
- portrait mode only. Using them in landscape mode will cause
- the image to be printed not centred on the page. Some
- printer drivers (such as the LaserJet III driver for
- WordPerfect 5.x) will severely distort the image if printed
- in landscape mode, due to the method used by the driver to
- rotate a page. Switching to a 'less sophisticated' driver
- (such as the LaserJet series II) will often solve this
- problem if you do not need the extra fonts of the LJ III
- driver.
-
- o Separate border overlays are provided to be used in portrait
- or landscape mode for letter (8.5" x 11"), and legal (8.5" x
- 14") paper. Please make sure that you use the correct one
- for your page size and orientation.
-
- o If possible, always insert the printer commands at the very
- beginning of a document or page. The location of where the
- overlay is printed on a page is predetermined in the printer
- command file or macro itself and is NOT determined by where
- you insert the printer command into your document. For
- example, even if you insert a letterhead overlay in a footer
- command, the letterhead will still be printed at the top of
- the page in its correct location. However, if you insert
- the command in the middle of a paragraph or line, it may
- disturb the formatting of some wordprocessing programs
- during printing.
-
- o If you must include a printer command file in the middle of
- a page, always put it on a separate line and include at least
- one hard return or end of paragraph marker after it.
-
- 79
-
-
-
- Over_LAZ HP (v4) Users' Guide
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Failure to do so may interfere with the formatting of the
- remainder of the line or paragraph which contains the
- command.
-
- o If you wish an overlay to be repeated on each page of a
- multi page document, insert the printer command file at the
- beginning of a header or footer command, if your word
- processing program supports this. Otherwise, you will have
- to manually insert the command at the top or bottom of each
- page. If using a header alters the page layout (some word
- processing programs will automatically insert several blank
- lines after a header, whether it contains 'printable' text
- or not), try putting the overlay command in a footer.
-
-
- o Blank letterheads (and other images) can be printed directly
- using the DOS copy command, such as:
-
- COPY IOMEMO.HP LPT1:
-
- Several images can be combined such as:
-
- COPY IOMEMO.HP/B+DRAFT.HP LPT1:
-
-
- However, when printing the images manually, you must use a
- manual page eject when you are done to actually receive the
- printed page. This is normally done by pressing the
- 'ONLINE' button of the printer, then the 'FORMFEED' button.
- Remember to press the 'ONLINE' button again when you have
- ejected the page so that the printer is once again ready to
- accept data. (The /B switch tells the COPY command to
- treat the files as BINARY and not text. This is only
- required when combining two or more files with the + option
- of the COPY command).

-
- All single user registrations include one FREE personalized
- letterhead overlay with registration. All LAN/Site Licenses
- include two free custom overlays. Simply send us a PCX or TIFF
- file (on a 5.25" or 3.5" MS-DOS format floppy disk) with your
- corporate logo and we will convert it to an Over_LAZ printer
- file! If you do not have a logo, send us the text you wish
- printed (along with details of the preferred font, size, etc) and
- we will create a letterhead for you. Additional personalized
- Over_LAZ can be created for only $15 (US), $17 (CDN) plus $2
- postage and handling. Use the handy order form included in the
- REGISTER.DOC file when specifying details. We have more than 250
- standard and decorative fonts to choose from. If you do not know
- the name of a particular font that you like, send us a sample and
- we will try to match it. We can also import graphics files
