- 1. COMPATIBILITY WITH FAXMODEMS
- -------------------------------
-
- Intel SatisFAXtion Modem/200, Modem/350 and
- Modem/400
- -------------------------------------------
-
- If you have trouble sending file transfers (not
- faxes) to other FAXability users, you might need a
- new DOWNLOAD.200 or DOWNLOAD.400 file.
-
- To obtain a new file, call Intel's automated fax
- delivery system (800-525-3019 in the U.S.; see the
- inside back cover of the User's Guide for
- international numbers). Request one of the following
- documents:
-
- Product File Document Number
- ------- ---- ---------------
- SatisFAXtion Modem/200 28.EXE 0028
- SatisFAXtion Modem/350 19.EXE 0019
- SatisFAXtion Modem/400 29.EXE 0029
-
- The files are self-extracting files. A READTHIS file
- explains how to extract the DOWNLOAD files.
-
- You can also obtain the files by calling the Intel
- BBS. The telephone number is printed on the inside
- back cover of the User's Guide.
-
- NOTE: The DOWNLOAD.400 file applies only to the
- SatisFAXtion Modem/400, not to the SatisFAXtion
- Modem/400e. If you have a SatisFAXtion Modem/400e,
- you don't need a new file.
-
-
- Intel SatisFAXtion Modem/100, Modem/300 and
- Modem/400e
- ---------------------------------------------
-
- If you have one of Intel's Class 1 SatisFAXtion
- faxmodems such as Modem/100, Modem/300, or
- Modem/400e, you might encounter a conflict between
- the DOS CASMODEM configuration file and the
- FAXability CASMODEM configuration file when you use
- the DOS Setup program (SETUP.EXE). The message notes
- that the files are of different lengths. Both
- SETUP.EXE and FAXability will work without problems
- and you can simply ignore the message.
-
-
- Intel NET SatisFAXtion Fax Server
- ---------------------------------
-
- You can use FAXability 2.0 to send and receive faxes
- through a NET SatisFAXtion fax server if all of these
- are true:
-
- * The fax server runs NET SatisFAXtion version 2.5
- or later.
-
- * You already have a fax user account and
- FAXability Plus version 1.1.
-
- * You are not running Windows from a shared network
- directory.
-
- * You have your own copy of the FAXability 2.0
- software.
-
- * Your fax server does not collect client billing
- information on the faxes you send.
-
- To install FAXability 2.0:
-
- Before running the FAXability 2.0 Install program, be
- sure to exit FAXability 1.1 and Faxbeep.
-
- If your system is set up to use both the DOS and
- Windows software to send and receive faxes on your
- fax server, skip step 2 of this procedure. The DOS
- FAXNODE TSR should run each time you start your
- system.
-
- Be sure the FAXNODE TSR is running on your system
- before you start Install. To do this and install
- FAXability:
-
- 1. Make sure your Windows directory contains a file
- named NETSAT.INI. If not, you or your LAN
- administrator should re-install your Windows fax
- software.
-
- 2. Exit Windows, change to your personal fax
- directory, type FAXSTART and press Enter. This
- loads the DOS FAXNODE TSR.
-
- 3. Restart Windows and run the FAXability 2.0
- installation program. Install will recommend
- copying files to the shared user directory;
- change this path to your personal fax directory
- and ignore any warnings Install issues. If
- asked, select Install for a SatisFAXtion
- faxmodem.
-
- 4. Copy CAS.DLL from the FAXability directory in the
- shared user directory to your Windows directory.
- The CAS.DLL logs you into the fax server when you
- use FAXability. (Or, if you are a fax
- administrator or supervisor, make sure Faxbeep is
- running iconized on your system before you run
- FAXability. This logs you into the fax server
- without copying CAS.DLL to your Windows
- directory.)
-
- 5. Restart Windows. You can now use FAXability to
- send and receive faxes through the fax server.
-
-
- External Faxmodems
- ------------------
-
- Don't turn your external faxmodem off and then on
- again while the CASMODEM program is running. If you
- do, the faxmodem will be unable to receive faxes. To
- correct the problem, restart your computer.
-
-
- Other Faxmodems
- ---------------
-
- Intel's automated fax delivery system contains an up-
- to-date listing of faxmodem compatibility
- information. To obtain a copy of this document, call
- 800-525-3019 (see the inside back cover of the User's
- Guide for international numbers). Request document
- 4220.
-
-
- ****************************************************
-
- 2. COMPATIBILITY WITH SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS
- -------------------------------------------
-
- Using a DOS Window in Windows
- -----------------------------
-
- This section applies only to Class 1, Class 2, and
- SENDFAX faxmodems (those that use CASMODEM.EXE as the
- CAS Manager).
-
- If your computer is connected to a local area network
- and you access network functions (such as electronic
- mail or printing), you might experience intermittent
- lockups when you open a DOS window. If so, edit your
- SYSTEM.INI file (located in your Windows directory).
- Add the following line in the [386Enh] section:
-
- TimerCriticalSection=500
-
- If the problem persists, Microsoft recommends
- increasing the value up to 10000 (in increments of
- 1000).
-
-
- Attaching Files From Windows Applications
- ----------------------------------------------
-
- To attach application files to your fax, the
- application must be registered for printing in the
- Windows Registration Database. This new technology
- is not available with all current Windows
- applications. For instance, Microsoft Word,
- Microsoft Excel, FileMaker Pro, and Corel Draw
- register in the database. Word Perfect, Quattro Pro,
- and QuarkXpress do not.
-
- If the application is not registered, FAXability does
- not attach the file.
-
- In addition, even if you have the default printer set
- properly in your Windows printer setup, some
- applications override the Windows default and always
- print documents to the printer set in their own Print
- Setup dialogs. Attaching files from such programs to
- a fax you are sending could result in the fax going
- to a printer rather than to your faxmodem. For
- example, in FileMaker, VISIO, Harvard Graphics, Lotus
- 1-2-3, Ami Pro, and PowerPoint, you must set the
- printer to FAXability on FAXMODEM from each
- application's Print Setup dialog before you send the
- fax.
-
- If your application does not register for printing,
- or if it retains control of the printer setting, it
- may be easier to simply open the application and
- print to FAXability on FAXMODEM to fax the file. See
- also the Faxing from Multiple Applications section
- later in this file.
-
-
- Using FAX.EXE
- -------------
-
- FAXability's custom cover page, fax viewing and
- fax annotating features are not compatible with the
- viewing function of Intel's DOS-based faxing software
- FAX.EXE. You cannot use FAX.EXE to view received
- faxes that have been previously viewed with
- FAXability. Nor can you use FAX.EXE to view cover
- pages of faxes that you send with from FAXability 2.0
- from your own system. In addition, FAXability's
- remote retrieval can only retrieve faxes received
- since the last time you closed FAX.EXE.
-
-
- Other Applications
- ------------------
-
- Intel's automated fax delivery system contains an up-
- to-date listing of compatibility issues with
- FAXability and other applications. To obtain a copy
- of this document, call 800-525-3019 (see the inside
- back cover of the User's Guide for international
- numbers). Request document 4056.
-
-
- ****************************************************
-
- 3. CORRECTIONS
-
- The following sections contain corrections to the
- manuals and on-line help.
-
-
- Keeping Copies of the Faxes You Send
- ------------------------------------
-
- When faxing, FAXability creates graphics files that
- it sends across the phone lines. The User's Guide
- states that by default FAXability deletes these files
- once they've been sent. This isn't true. The
- default setting is to save these files so you can
- view the faxes you've sent or forward them to others.
-
- However, these fax files can be quite large and can
- fill up your hard disk over time. To conserve disk
- space, do one of the following:
-
- * Delete entries from your Outbox when you no
- longer need them. This will also delete the
- temporary fax files.
-
- * Turn off the automatic saving of these files. You
- can do this from the Send Fax dialog. Choose the
- Options button. In the Options dialog, choose
- Delete When Successful.
-
- If you turn off automatic saving, you can't use
- FAXability to view fax files after you send them.
- However, you can start the application you used to
- create the document and view the document there,
- just as you would if you had printed the document
- to a printer.
-
-
- Phone Numbers Displayed in the Group List
- -----------------------------------------
-
- When sending a fax or file transfer, you can pick a
- name from the Address Book and add it to the Send
- dialog's Group List. The User's Guide, page 47,
- states that the number in the Group List will be the
- exact number to be dialed.
-
- However, there is one exception. If you've included
- an extension with the number when you added it to the
- Address Book (see the Address Book User's Guide for
- information about extensions), the extension may not
- be listed in the Group List, and it will not appear
- on the cover page. The extension will be dialed; it
- just won't appear.
-
- This helps keep sensitive credit card information
- (which might be in the extension) from appearing in
- your outgoing faxes.
-
-
- Actual Size/Full Size
- ---------------------
-
- Pages 74, 75, and 130 of the User's Guide refer to
- Full Size view of cover pages; the View menu item is
- Actual Size. The terms are equivalent.
-
-
- Accelerator Keys in Word for Windows
- ------------------------------------
-
- Page 146 of the User's Guide says that the
- accelerator key will be N when you enter Sen&dFax for
- your menu item; this is incorrect. The accelerator
- key is D when you enter Sen&dFax.
-
-
- ****************************************************
-
- 4. ADVANCED FEATURES
- --------------------
-
- The following sections describe features of
- FAXability and Address Book that aren't fully covered
- in the User's Guide.
-
-
- Faxing from Multiple Applications
- ---------------------------------
-
- FAXability allows you to print to the FAXability on
- FAXMODEM printer driver from several applications and
- send all of the documents as part of the same fax.
- This is especially convenient if you want to send
- just a few pages from each document. To print from
- multiple applications:
-
- 1. Open the first application and print to
- FAXability's driver.
-
- 2. When the Send Fax dialog appears, instead of
- filling it out and choosing the Send button,
- open another application and print to
- FAXability's driver. The second document is
- added to the same send.
-
- 3. Continue printing as many documents as you
- like. When you finish, fill out the Send Fax
- dialog and send the fax.
-
- When you combine documents into a fax in this manner,
- the list of attached documents on the Send Fax dialog
- won't indicate how many documents are combined. To
- see the list, choose the Options button and check the
- Preview Outgoing Fax box. Then, whenever you send
- the fax, FAXability will display a list of documents
- and give you the option to view each.
-
-
- Using the Bookcase Window in Help
- ---------------------------------
-
- Included with FAXability's help system is an
- application called Bookcase. Bookcase shows an
- outline of help files for both Address Book and
- FAXability.
-
- To display the Bookcase window, open the help window
- and click on the Bookcase button.
-
- Expand and collapse items by double-clicking titles
- with a book icon. On titles with a page icon,
- double-click to jump to the topic. You can search
- across all help files from the Bookcase Search.
-
-
- Scanning and Faxing
- -------------------
-
- FAXability uses the TWAIN interface to support
- scanners. More and more scanner vendors are offering
- Windows drivers to provide TWAIN support. If your
- scanner didn't come with a TWAIN driver, contact your
- scanner manufacturer to see if there's one available
- now.
-
- Even if your scanner doesn't have a TWAIN driver, you
- can still fax scanned images by printing them to the
- FAXability on FAXMODEM printer driver. See Chapter
- 12 in the User's Guide for details.
-
-
- Viewing in Pixel per Pixel Mode
- -------------------------------
-
- If you need precise control when designing cover
- pages or need to see EXACTLY how your fax will look
- before sending it, view the fax or cover page in
- actual size mode and then zoom in to 400%. In this
- view, every pixel (dot) on the fax appears as a pixel
- on the screen.
-
-
- Turning Off the Address Book's Short Form
- -----------------------------------------
-
- By default, whenever you choose the Address Book's
- Add button to add a person to your Address Book file,
- the Add Individual-Short Form dialog appears. This
- abbreviated form lets you enter just the basic
- information about that person. To add more
- information, you need to choose the Long Form button
- (or edit that individual later).
-
- If you find that you're always entering more than the
- basic information, you can turn off the short form.
- In this case, the long form appears whenever you add
- an individual.
-
- Follow these steps to turn off the short form.
-
- 1. Make a copy of ICOMMAB.INI, located in your
- Windows directory. Then, with a text editor, edit
- ICOMMAB.INI.
-
- 2. In the [Address Book] section, add the line:
-
- AlwaysUseLongForm=1
-
- 3. Save the file, then close the Address Book if
- it's running and restart it.
-
-
- ****************************************************
-
- 5. OPTIONS AND PREFERENCES
- --------------------------
-
- There are several places in FAXability where you can
- set options and preferences that will remain in
- effect even after you restart your computer.
- Generally, preferences can be set when you choose:
-
- * The Cover Page and Options buttons when Sending
- a fax
-
- * The Options Menu in the FAXability Manager
-
- * Preferences in the Edit Menu for Address Book
-
-
- The most common options and preferences include:
-
- * Turning off the Beep (and setting other
- ways to notify you of received faxes).
-
- * Setting how to handle files created when
- you send a fax.
-
- * Turning previewing on or off.
-
- * Turning on the menu in the Send dialog's
- Note window.
-
- * Displaying the markup tools in the Viewer
- window.
-
- * Address Book font size, double-click
- behavior, and sorting.
-
-
- ****************************************************
-
- 6. TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION
- ------------------------------
-
- Most troubleshooting information is available in
- FAXability's on-line help. From the FAXability
- manager, open the Help menu and choose
- Troubleshooting.
-
- The following sections provide additional
- troubleshooting tips and list some situations to
- watch out for.
-
-
- Modifying Your AUTOEXEC.BAT File
- --------------------------------
-
- If you have a Class 1, Class 2, or SENDFAX faxmodem,
- you must run a program called CASMODEM.EXE for
- FAXability to work correctly. CASMODEM.EXE is the CAS
- manager that FAXability needs to send and receive
- faxes.
-
- If you have a SatisFAXtion Class 1 faxmodem, your
- faxmodem's setup program adds a CASMODEM command line
- to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you have a different
- model or brand, FAXability's INSTALL program adds the
- command line. If you edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
- yourself, make sure the CASMODEM line appears:
-
- * After command lines for disk caches
- * After command lines for network drivers
- * Before command lines to run menu or shell
- programs (such as Windows)
- * Before command lines to run application programs
- or batch files
-
- Do not load CASMODEM high. Instead, provide at least
- 64K bytes of EMS memory for CASMODEM to load into.
- Refer to Advanced CASMODEM Options in Help for more
- information on EMS memory.
-
- If you have an Intel SatisFAXtion faxmodem that
- doesn't support Class 1 faxing, run your faxmodem's
- installation program before installing FAXability.
- If there's an option, make sure to include CAS in the
- installation. Also, let the installation program
- update your AUTOEXEC.BAT file if it needs to.
-
-
- Sending Address Book Files
- --------------------------
-
- Although you can use FAXability to send Address Book
- files as file transfers to other FAXability users,
- don't send the Address Book files that are listed in
- the File menu (the last four files you opened). If
- you try, an error might occur and cause the Address
- Book to stop functioning.
-
- If you need to send one of the active Address Book
- files, make a copy of the file and send the copy.
-
-
- Viewing Text Objects in Viewer and Cover Page
- Designer
- ----------------------------------------------
-
- With some video drivers, text objects can appear
- wider than they actually are when printed or faxed.
- This happens because at small sizes, the characters
- sometimes don't resize properly. This problem isn't
- unique to FAXability; it's evident in all programs
- that display and resize characters.
-
- If you notice problems when annotating a fax or
- designing a cover page, zoom in to the largest view
- possible. The closer the image is to actual size,
- the more accurate the character sizes will be.
-
-
- If a Grid Appears on Color Images when Faxed
- --------------------------------------------
-
- If you include color images in your documents and
- print them to the FAXability on FAXMODEM printer
- driver, the resulting fax might sometimes have a fine
- grid printed on top of the image.
-
- To prevent this, examine the application's Print
- Setup dialog. Turn on any options that cause the
- application to use the printer's resolution or half-
- toning, such as:
-
- Use Printer's Resolution
- Use Printer's Halftoning
- Use Printer's Dithering
- Use Printer's Scaling
-
- This ensures that FAXability (and not the
- application) will convert the image to the proper
- format and size.
