When you select a COM port for your faxmodem, Install will test that port to see if there actually is a working faxmodem there. Otherwise FAXability wouldn't work once it was installed. Unfortunately, this test can have unpredictable consequences that might force you to restart your computer. Don't worry, it won't cause any other problems.
This situation could occur when the COM port you've chosen uses the same IRQ as another device on your computer, such as a network card. This is called an IRQ conflict. You must resolve this conflict before you can use your faxmodem. You can do this by selecting another COM port or by changing the IRQ that the other device uses.
If you are not sure which COM port to select, there is a DOS program called COMSTAT on the FAXability Install Disk 1 that you can use to see which COM ports you have available. We recommend that you exit from Install, exit from Windows, and run this program now if you aren't sure which COM port to choose.
