  56. CHECKING FOR STATUS AND ERROR MESSAGES
  57.  
  58. When ATM for WordPerfect encounters an error condition, it sounds 
  59. a long, low beep and records an internal error message. You can 
  60. display the error message by using the WordPerfect DOS shell to 
  61. run the ATWP program. When you run the ATWP program while ATM for 
  62. WordPerfect is active, it displays a status or error message. The 
  63. error message may help you correct the problem.  If you are using
  64. WordPerfect for Windows, the error messages will be displayed
  65. automatically--there is no need to shell to DOS as you do when
  66. running WordPerfect for DOS to check error messages.
  67.  
  68. The error messages fall into three categories:
  69.  
  70. * Corrupted or missing files--This usually requires a repeat of 
  71.   installation from floppy disk as described in Chapter 1 of the 
  72.   ATM for WordPerfect User Guide.
  73.  
  74. * Internal errors--These shouldn't ever occur. If they do, call 
  75.   your authorized Adobe reseller.
  76.  
  77. * Requirements. These messages let you know that an ATM for 
  78.   WordPerfect requirement, such as a correct version or sufficient 
  79.   hard disk space, has not been met. You can usually correct these 
  80.   problems yourself.
  81.  
  82. Each of the error messages is described in the following list. 
  83.  
  84.  
  85. Follow these steps to read an error message from WPDOS:
  86.  
  87. 1. Press Ctrl-F1 (DOS Shell) and G (Go to DOS).
  88.  
  89. 2. Change to the directory that contains ATM for WordPerfect 
  90.    (usually your WordPerfect program directory).
  91.  
  92. 3. Type ATWP at the DOS prompt and press Enter. The error message 
  93.    is displayed.
  94.  
  95. 4. When you have read the message, type EXIT and press Enter to 
  96.    return to WordPerfect.
  97.  
  98. If you are using WordPerfect for Windows, error messages will be
  99. displayed automatically.
  100.  
  101.  
  102. LIST OF ERROR AND STATUS MESSAGES
  103.  
  104. No Typeface Files (*.DFM) Can Be Found
  105.  
  106. No DFM files were found in the DFM subdirectory of the Type 1 font 
  107. directory specified in ATWP.CFG. If you haven't moved the Type 1 
  108. font files, repeat the installation process described in Chapter 1 
  109. of the ATM for WordPerfect User Guide. If you have moved the Type 
  110. 1 font files, use advanced reinstallation options to tell ATM for
  111. WordPerfect the path name of the new font directory. See "ATM for 
  112. WordPerfect Advanced Reinstallation Options" in the Readme file
  113. ADVANCED.TXT for instructions.
  114.  
  115.  
  116. Rasterizer Error XX
  117.  
  118. XX stands for a two-character code. When a rasterizer error 
  119. occurs, the first thing to try is deleting the ATWP.INF file found 
  120. in your WordPerfect directory. To delete this file you must exit
  121. WordPerfect, delete the file and re-start ATWP.  Then print the
  122. document again. If the problem occurs again, try the following
  123. procedures.
  124.  
  125. There are two classes of rasterizer errors. The first class can 
  126. usually be corrected (as described below). The second class are 
  127. internal errors; these errors cannot be corrected. If one of these 
  128. errors occurs, call your authorized Adobe reseller.
  129.  
  130. Rasterizer errors: 9C, 9A, 99, 91, 90, 8F, FF, FE
  131. Solution: Reinstall your Type 1 fonts and try printing the problem 
  132. file again.
  133.  
  134. Rasterizer error: 9B
  135. Solution: Delete the ATWP.INF file found in your WordPerfect 
  136. directory and retry printing the file where the problem occurred. 
  137.  
  138. Rasterizer error: FC
  139. Solution:  You have insufficient memory to print this file. Buy 
  140. more memory or reduce the number of fonts used in the document.
  141.  
  142. Rasterizer errors: 98, 97, 96, 95, 93, 92, 8E, FB
  143. Solution: These are internal errors for which there is no 
  144. solution. Call your authorized Adobe reseller if you receive any 
  145. of the above errors.
  146.  
  147.  
  148. Device Driver Problem
  149.  
  150. An error was encountered while opening, closing, or writing to the 
  151. output driver. Use ATINSTAL /A to check for valid printer port 
  152. mapping. See "ATM for WordPerfect Advanced Reinstallation Options"
  153. in the Readme file ADVANCED.TXT for instructions.
  154.  
  155.  
  156. Can't Create Dot-Matrix Temp Files
  157.  
  158. DOS or network software prevented ATWP from creating temporary 
  159. files required for dot-matrix printing. Use ATINSTAL/A to check 
  160. the directory used for the temporary files. (See "ATM for 
  161. WordPerfect Advanced Reinstallation Options" earlier in the Readme
  162. file ADVANCED.TXT for instructions.) Deleting the directory completely
  163. tells ATWP to use WordPerfect's temporary directory specified with the
  164. WordPerfect /D option.
  165.  
  166.  
  167. Stack Overflow
  168.  
  169. ATWP has used too much internal stack space. This is an 
  170. uncorrectable internal error. However, restarting your computer 
  171. might correct the problem. Please notify your authorized Adobe 
  172. reseller.
  173.  
  174.  
  175. Missing ATWP.OVR or Wrong Version
  176.  
  177. ATWP was unable to find the ATWP.OVR overlay file, or you are 
  178. using a newer version of ATWP. Make sure that ATWP.OVR is in the 
  179. same directory as the ATWP.CFG configuration file. If ATWP.OVR and 
  180. ATWP.CFG are in the same directory, repeat the first-time 
  181. installation process described in Chapter 1 of the ATM for 
  182. WordPerfect User Guide.
  183.  
  184.  
  185. Can't Execute WordPerfect
  186.  
  187. ATWP is unable to run WordPerfect. Use ATINSTAL/A to check for a 
  188. correct WordPerfect directory and file name. See "ATM for 
  189. WordPerfect Advanced Reinstallation Options" in the Readme
  190. file ADVANCED.TXT for instructions.
  191.  
  192.  
  193. Can't Find Configuration File
  194.  
  195. ATWP can't find the ATWP.CFG configuration file. Make sure that it 
  196. is in a directory on the DOS PATH, or change to the ATM for 
  197. WordPerfect directory before running ATWP. (A common cause of this 
  198. problem is that your WordPerfect directory is not listed in the 
  199. PATH command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.)
  200.  
  201.  
  202. Configuration Error
  203.  
  204. ATWP is unable to process a line from the ATWP.CFG configuration 
  205. file. The file might be corrupted. Repeat the first-time 
  206. installation from floppy disks as described in Chapter 1 of the 
  207. ATM for WordPerfect User Guide.
  208.  
  209.  
  210. Insufficient Memory
  211.  
  212. There is insufficient memory to run ATM for WordPerfect. You can 
  213. increase the amount of memory available with any of the following 
  214. techniques:
  215.  
  216. * Use a memory manager such as QEMM, 386Max, or DOS 5.0's 
  217.   HIMEM.SYS to load device drivers in high memory above the
  218.   640 KB memory area.
  219.  
  220. * If you have a 386 processor, you can use the DOS 5 program 
  221.   EMM386.EXE to create expanded (EMS) memory that ATM for 
  222.   WordPerfect can use. 
  223.  
  224. * Reduce the amount of conventional memory used by 
  225.   Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) programs. TSR programs are 
  226.   usually started with commands in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  227.  
  228. * Purchase more memory for your PC.
  229.  
  230.  
  231. Requires DOS Version 3.0 or Later
  232.  
  233. ATM for WordPerfect will not work with versions of DOS prior to 
  234. version 3.0. Adobe recommends you upgrade to DOS 5 or later.
  235.  
  236.  
  237. ATM for WordPerfect Already Loaded
  238.  
  239. You have tried to load ATM for WordPerfect in TSR mode, but it has 
  240. already been loaded.
  241.  
  242.  
  243. Conflict with Some Other TSR
  244.  
  245. Some other Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program is preventing 
  246. ATM for WordPerfect from running. Unload your other TSR programs 
  247. one at a time to determine which one is causing the conflict. If 
  248. your TSR programs do not provide a way of switching them off, 
  249. remove the commands in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file that starts them.
  250.  
  251.  
  252. Unable to Locate DOS ErrorMode
  253.  
  254. ATM for WordPerfect is incompatible with the version of DOS you 
  255. are using. ATM for WordPerfect requires DOS version 3.0 or higher. 
  256. Adobe recommends you upgrade to DOS 5 or later.
  257.  
  258.  
  259. Unable to Remove ATM for WordPerfect from Memory
  260.  
  261. You have used the /U option with the ATWP command to remove ATM 
  262. for WordPerfect from memory, but some other memory resident 
  263. program has been loaded that prevents ATWP from unloading. Remove 
  264. the program causing the problem first, or restart your computer.
  265.  
  266.  
  267. Loaded Version Is Different
  268.  
  269. You have run a version of ATWP that is different from the one you 
  270. initially loaded. Check for multiple copies of ATWP.EXE in the 
  271. directories on your hard disk and delete all but the most current 
  272. version.
  273.  
  274.  
  275. EMS Unavailable
  276.  
  277. ATWP is unable to access expanded memory. You might be able to 
  278. resolve this by increasing the number of handles or buffers in 
  279. your EMS driver.
  280.  
  281.  
  282. You Have Less Than 1.5 MB Left on Your Hard Disk. If You Don't 
  283.   Have Enough Room for Dot-Matrix Temporary Files, Part of the 
  284.   Printing Will Be Blank. Cancel ATWP? (Y/N)
  285.  
  286. The dot-matrix temporary files typically require as much as 1.5 
  287. megabytes (MB) of hard disk space, depending on the printer's 
  288. resolution and the amount of black on the page. Delete unused or 
  289. unnecessary files on your hard disk to create more space. (See 
  290. "Technical Requirements for Dot-Matrix and Inkjet Printers" later 
  291. in this Readme file for more information about the dot-matrix page 
  292. buffer.)
  293.  
  294.  
  295. ATWP Still Printing. Ctrl-C to Cancel
  296.  
  297. You have exited from WordPerfect, but ATM for WordPerfect is still 
  298. sending output to the printer. Either wait for it to finish or 
  299. press Ctrl-C to cancel the print job.
  300.  
  301.  
  302. Insufficient Room on Hard Disk to Build Page Image
  303.  
  304. ATM for WordPerfect has run out of room for the dot-matrix 
  305. temporary files. Delete unnecessary files from your hard disk and 
  306. try again. See "Technical Requirements for Dot-Matrix and Inkjet 
  307. Printers" later in this Readme file for more information about the 
  308. dot-matrix page buffer.
  309.

  311.  
  312. HOW ATM FOR WORDPERFECT SUPPORTS PRINTERS
  313.  
  314. This section provides a technical overview of how ATM for 
  315. WordPerfect prints Type 1 fonts on LaserJet, dot-matrix, and 
  316. inkjet printers. The section also describes how ATM for 
  317. WordPerfect makes Type 1 fonts available for PostScript printers.
  318.  
  319.  
  320. LaserJet Printers
  321.  
  322. ATM for WordPerfect lets you print PostScript language Type 1 
  323. fonts on LaserJet printers without having to buy an expensive 
  324. PostScript cartridge or extra memory. ATM for WordPerfect runs 
  325. special LaserJet font management schemes designed to print as fast 
  326. as possible, while avoiding printer memory overflows. Using your 
  327. printer's memory as a font cache, ATM for WordPerfect sends small 
  328. and medium fonts as bitmapped soft fonts. Larger characters are 
  329. sent as graphics. ATM for WordPerfect keeps track of the fonts it 
  330. has downloaded and swaps fonts efficiently when needed, shortening 
  331. print times dramatically and reducing printer memory overflow 
  332. errors (Error 20).

  334.  
  335. Dot-Matrix and Inkjet Printers
  336.  
  337. ATM for WordPerfect prints characters on dot-matrix and inkjet 
  338. with a quality approaching laser printer output. ATM for 
  339. WordPerfect also lets you print landscape (horizontal) pages on a 
  340. dot-matrix or inkjet printer.
  341.  
  342. When you use ATM for WordPerfect with dot-matrix and inkjet 
  343. printers, fonts are cached on your PC system (meaning that 
  344. individual characters are generated in the size you want and 
  345. stored for subsequent use in your PC's memory or on your hard 
  346. disk).
  347.  
  348. Pages are transmitted to the printer as graphics data (pictures) 
  349. at the resolution you specify with the Text and Graphics Quality 
  350. settings in WordPerfect's Print Menu.
  351.  
  352.  
  353. PostScript Printers
  354.  
  355. Just as ATM for WordPerfect handles the font management for non-
  356. PostScript printers, the WordPerfect PostScript printer driver 
  357. handles font management for PostScript printers. When you use ATM 
  358. for WordPerfect with a PostScript printer, ATM for WordPerfect 
  359. installs Type 1 fonts into WordPerfect's PostScript printer 
  360. driver. When using a PostScript printer, you don't have to load 
  361. ATM for WordPerfect with WordPerfect with the ATWP command--just 
  362. run WordPerfect as you always have.
  363.  
  364.  
  365. Technical Requirements for Dot-Matrix and Inkjet Printers
  366.  
  367. Users of dot-matrix and inkjet printers need to have a significant 
  368. amount of free space on their hard disks for ATM for WordPerfect 
  369. to create a page buffer file. This file holds a copy of each page 
  370. before it is sent to the printer. If you do not have sufficient 
  371. disk space available for your print job, ATM for WordPerfect 
  372. sounds a long, low beep. If you hear the long, low beep, while 
  373. printing to a dot-matrix or inkjet printer, clear some space on 
  374. your hard disk or choose a lower Text Quality setting and print 
  375. again.
  376.  
  377. Here are our recommendations to users who print standard, letter-
  378. sized documents:
  379.  
  380. * If your printer has a high resolution of 360 dots per inch 
  381.   (dpi), you'll never have a problem if you maintain 1.5
  382.   megabytes (MB) of free disk space, and you'll probably do fine 
  383.   with 1 MB. Many 24 pin dot-matrix printers fit in this 
  384.   category.
  385.  
  386. * If your printer has a high resolution of 300 dpi, you'll never 
  387.   have a problem if you have 1 MB of free disk space, and 750 KB 
  388.   are likely to suffice. This category of printer includes DeskJet 
  389.   printers and many dot-matrix printers.
  390.  
  391. If you will be printing large signs and banners on your printer, 
  392. we recommend that you
  393.  
  394. * Stick with draft or medium text quality. At draft quality, 750 
  395.   KB of free disk space will be sufficient to print almost any 
  396.   job. 1.5 MB is enough free disk space to print at medium 
  397.   quality.
  398.  
  399.  
  400. Built-in font limitation
  401.  
  402. The ATM for WordPerfect dot-matrix and inkjet printer drivers 
  403. support only PostScript language Type 1 fonts. Use your regular 
  404. (non-ATM for WordPerfect) printer driver to use your printer's 
  405. built-in fonts.
  406.  
  407.  
  408.  
  409. ATM FOR WORDPERFECT FILES
  410.  
  411. This section lists and briefly describes the files that ATM for 
  412. WordPerfect creates on your hard disk. ATM for WordPerfect 
  413. installs files in the following directories:
  414.  
  415. * The WordPerfect program directory (usually c:\wp5 or c:\wp51)
  416.  
  417. * The WordPerfect printer directory (usually the same as the 
  418.   program directory)
  419.  
  420. * The PostScript (Type 1) font directory (usually c:\psfonts)
  421.  
  422. * The directory you choose for the sample files
  423.  
  424. * The WordPerfect macros directory  (usually the same as the

  435. ATWP.CFG       ATM for WordPerfect configuration file containing 
  436.                information about your ATM for WordPerfect setup. 
  437.                This file can be read with a text editor.
  438.  
  439. ATWP.INF       Initialization file for ATM for WordPerfect that 
  440.                lists available Type 1 font files. This file is 
  441.                created the first time you load ATM for WordPerfect 
  442.                and is updated when you add Type 1 fonts.
  443.  
  444. ATWP.EXE       ATM for WordPerfect program file.
  445.  
  446. ATWP.OVR       Overlay file used by ATM for WordPerfect (ATWP.EXE).
  447.  
  448. ATWP.PDB       ATM for WordPerfect's database of dot-matrix and 
  449.                inkjet printers.
  450.  
  451. ATINSTAL.EXE   ATM for WordPerfect installation program (when run from
  452.            from the floppy disks) and reinstallation program (when

  540. MODIFICATIONS MADE TO WINDOWS FOR WORDPERFECT FOR WINDOWS

  542. This section describes two topics:

  544. * How ATINSTAL modifies the WIN.INI file

  550. How ATINSTAL Modifies the Windows WIN.INI File
  551.  
  552. When you install ATM for WordPerfect for WordPerfect for Windows, 
  553. ATINSTAL adds the following line to your Windows WIN.INI file:
  554.  
  555.   load=ltools
  556.  
  557. If you already have a load line in your WIN.INI file, ATINSTAL 
  558. adds ltools to that line.
  559.  
  560. The load line invokes LTOOLS.EXE, the LaserTools loader. 
  561. LTOOLS.EXE performs the function of loading ATM for WordPerfect's 
  562. Windows DLLs.
  563.  
  564.  
  565. Switching ATM for WordPerfect On and Off with the Windows Control 
  566.   Panel
  567.  
  568. ATM for WordPerfect includes a Windows Control Panel you can use 
  569. to switch the ATM for WordPerfect program on and off.
  570.  
  571. Follow these steps to activate the ATM for WordPerfect Windows 
  572. Control Panel:
  573.  
  574. 1. Start Windows.
  575.  
  576. 2. Choose New from the File menu. The New Program Object dialog 
  577.    box appears.
  578.  
  579. 3. Choose OK. The Program Item Properties dialog box appears.
  580.  
  581. 4. Choose Browse. The Browse dialog box appears.
  582.  
  583. 5. Locate the ATWPWIN.EXE file. If you installed for both

  601. USING ATM FOR WORDPERFECT FONTS WITH OTHER APPLICATIONS

  603. Because the typefaces you get with ATM for WordPerfect are 
  604. PostScript language Type 1 fonts, you can use them with many other 
  605. applications. In general, you need Type 1 font installation 
  606. software for the application with which you want to use your Type 
  607. 1 fonts. This section offers advice for using the Type 1 fonts 
  608. with OS/2 and Microsoft Word, Ventura Publisher, and other DOS 
  609. applications.

  614. The ATM for WordPerfect package includes ATM for Windows. You can 
  615. use ATM for Windows to install Type 1 fonts for use with Windows 
  616. applications. See Chapter 3 in the ATM for WordPerfect User Guide 
  617. for instructions on how to use ATM for Windows.

  622. OS/2 version 2 includes Adobe Type Manager. You can use ATM 
  623. to install Type 1 fonts directly into OS/2. See your OS/2
  624. documentation for instructions.

  627. Microsoft Word, Ventura Publisher, and Other DOS Applications
  628.  
  629. You can use the Type 1 fonts included with ATM for WordPerfect 
  630. with Microsoft Word for DOS and Ventura Publisher, GEM version. 
  631. You need the Adobe Font Installer and Font Foundry software to 
  632. install the typefaces and make screen and printer fonts for these 
  633. applications. The Adobe Font Installer supports PostScript and 
  634. LaserJet II and III printers. The Adobe Font Installer and Font 
  635. Foundry are included in each Adobe typeface package. To order a 
  636. typeface and get these programs, call your authorized Adobe 
  637. reseller. (Phone numbers for authorized Adobe resellers are 
  638. included with your ATM for WordPerfect package.)

  642. USING CARTRIDGE FONTS, ADDITIONAL INTERNAL FONTS, AND SOFT FONTS
  643.  
  644. As with other font products, there's an easy way and a hard way to 
  645. use ATM for WordPerfect with cartridge fonts, your LaserJet 
  646. clone's additional internal fonts, or soft fonts.  This information
  647. applies to laser printers only.
  648.  
  649. The easy way: use separate printer drivers
  650.  
  651. You can have one printer driver set up to use your cartridge, 
  652. internal, or soft fonts and another for ATM for WordPerfect. 
  653. Select one or the other depending on the fonts you want to use.
  654.  
  655. The harder way: copy font information
  656.  
  657. If you want to use both ATM for WordPerfect and your cartridge, 
  658. internal, or soft fonts in the same documents, you must copy the 
  659. font information from your old .ALL file to the new ATM for 
  660. WordPerfect .ALL file.
  661.  
  662. WordPerfect 5.1 users use the PTR program to copy the font 
  663. information. WordPerfect 5.0 users use the COPYFONT program that's 
  664. available from WordPerfect and from CompuServe's WordPerfect 
  665. support forums. (Instructions for copying fonts with COPYFONT are 
  666. similar to those that follow for the PTR program.)
  667.  
  668. NOTE: Both WordPerfect and Adobe Systems strongly recommend that 
  669. you back up a copy of all *.PRS files and *.ALL files before 
  670. running the PTR program. See the WordPerfect manual under Printer 
  671. Program and PTR for more information.

  673. Follow these steps to copy your fonts using PTR:
  674.  
  675. 1. Type PTR followed by the exact name of the .ALL file you were 
  676.    using (probably PTR WPHP1.ALL), and press Enter.
  677.  
  678. 2. Select the printer you are using from the list that is 
  679.    displayed and press Enter.
  680.  
  681. 3. Highlight Fonts from the list and press Enter. Highlight the 
  682.    font set you want to copy. 
  683.  
  684. 4. Press 4 (Copy). You are asked for the name of the .ALL 
  685.    file into which the fonts are to be copied. Enter the ATM for 
  686.    WordPerfect .ALL name (ATWP51.ALL) and press Enter. (Be sure to 
  687.    do this for each font set you want to use.) PTR updates the 
  688.    .ALL file.

  690. 5. Press F7 (Exit) at each screen and answer N (No) when asked if 
  691.    you wish to Save File. Answer Y (Yes) when asked if you wish 
  692.    to exit the PTR program.

  694. You now need to select the fonts you copied into the ATM for 
  695. WordPerfect .ALL file. Do this by running the PTR program for the 
  696. ATWP51.ALL file as follows:

  698. 1. Type PTR ATWP51.ALL and press Enter.
  699.  
  700. 2. Select the printer you are using and press Enter.
  701.  
  702. 3. Highlight Fonts and press Enter. A list of available fonts 
  703.    appears. Highlight the new font(s) (cartridge, soft, or 
  704.    internal) one at a time and put an asterisk (*) next to each
  705.    font.

  707. 4. Press F7 (Exit) at each screen to exit and press Y (yes) to 
  708.    save changes.

  710. 5. Press Y (Yes) to exit the PTR program.
  711.  
  712. 6. You now need to update your printer driver. Start WordPerfect 
  713.    and press Shift-F7 (Print), S (Select Printer), and U (Update).
