  30. Font Filenames

  33. The chart below shows the font filenames for the TrueType(TM) 
  34. fonts in the Winter Holiday Font Pack. Each installed TrueType 
  35. font is composed of a TTF file and an FOT file. The Winter
  36. Holiday Font Pack disk contains TTF files which you install in 
  37. Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) 3.1. During installation, Windows 
  38. creates corresponding FOT files.

  50. Bitstream MakeUp(TM)

  53. If you use the Holiday Pi font in MakeUp version 1.0 or 
  54. 1.1, you will probably get one of these error messages: 
  55. "Not a valid TrueType font" or "Divide by zero." 
  56.  
  57. To avoid this problem, you need to obtain several updated
  58. MakeUp files, which are available on Compuserve. To access 
  59. them on Compuserve
  60.  
  61. 1. Log onto Compuserve.
  62.  
  63. 2. At any prompt, type GO DTPVendor and press ENTER.
  64.  
  65. 3. Ater the first menu, enter either (2) Messages or
  66. (3) Libraries and press ENTER.
  67.  
  68. 4. At the next menu, enter (13) Bitstream and press ENTER.
  69. Look for "M.U.T.T. Files" (MakeUp TrueType Files). 
  70.  
  71. You can also get the updated files by faxing your request
  72. to Bitstream Technical Support at 617-354-7954 (U.S. 
  73. and Canada only). If you don't have access to Compuserve
  74. or to a fax machine, call Technical Support at 617-497-7514.

  82. Using the Fonts in Type Manipulation Programs
  83. *********************************************

  85. If you use applications with type manipulation features
  86. such as Bitstream MakeUp, CorelDRAW, or Aldus 
  87. IntelliDraw(TM), we recommend that you apply to the 
  88. Holiday Pi and SnowCap fonts only those special effects 
  89. that change the orientation of a character, for example, 
  90. flipping or rotating.
  91.  
  92. Do NOT apply any special effects that change the shape of
  93. a character, for example, creating shadows, 3-D effects, or
  94. stretching. The image created when you apply these types of
  95. effects may not display and/or print correctly.
  96.  
  97. Here is a list of the effects that you CAN apply without
  98. problems to the Holiday Pi and SnowCap fonts in Bitstream
  99. MakeUp, CorelDRAW, and Aldus IntelliDraw.
  100.  
  101. Bitstream MakeUp (with updated files): Mask, Regular Text
  102. (AUTO), Regular Text (FIXED), Top of Circle, Bottom of
  103. Circle, Around a Circle, Rotate, Duplicate, Flip Horizontal,
  104. Flip Vertical, Color.
  105.  
  106. CorelDRAW 3.x: Use as Straight Text, Rotate, Skew, Mirror, 
  107. Fit to Path, Fit to Curve, Fit to Circle, Fit to Object.
  108.  
  109. Aldus IntelliDraw: Mirror, Slant, Rotate. 
  110.  
  111. NOTE: Harvard Draw and Gold Disk Professional Draw do not
  112. work with the fonts in the Winter Holiday Font Pack. 
  113.  
  114. You may have other applications with type manipulation
  115. features that we did not test. If you do, follow the general
  116. suggestions mentioned above.

  119. information about these applications.

  123. Missing Lines of Text\HP(R) LaserJet(R) Printers
  124. ************************************************

  126. If you find entire lines of text are missing when you print 
  127. the Holiday Pi font to an HP LaserJet printer, try this: 
  128. Save your document and exit the application. Open the 
  129. application and print only the page containing the missing 
  130. lines.
  131.  
  132. If you haven't done so already, you can also try this: Open
  133. the Windows Control Panel and double-click Printers.
  134. Highlight your printer and click Setup, then Options. Click
  135. the Print TrueType as Graphics check box. Try printing
  136. again.
  137.  
  138.

  140. Microsoft Excel and Aldus PageMaker(R)/PostScript(R) Printers
  141. *************************************************************
  142.  
  143. The user guide suggests that when you print the fonts to
  144. a PostScript printer, that you select "Bitmap (Type 3)" in
  145. the Windows Control Panel. This usually solves the problem
  146. of missing characters in print.
  147.  
  148. However, if you make this selection, and then rotate characters 
  149. from any of the fonts in Excel or PageMaker and print to a 
  150. PostScript printer, you may find that the rotated characters
  151. don't print.
  152.  
  153. In order to print rotated characters, open the Windows Control
  154. Panel and double-click Printers. Highlight your PostScript 
  155. printer and click Setup, Options, Advanced. In the TrueType 
  156. Fonts box under "Send to Printer as:", select Adobe Type 1. 
  157. Then try printing fewer pages at a time, reducing the size of 
  158. the rotated characters, or reducing the number of fonts 
  159. or size of the fonts.
  160.

  163. WordPerfect(R) for Windows/Dot Matrix Printers
  164. **********************************************
  165.  
  166. If you use Holiday Pi from 96 to 103 point in WordPerfect
  167. for Windows and your printer is a dot matrix with an
  168. Epson(R) 24-pin driver (Epson24.drv), you get this error
  169. message when you print: "System Error Divide By Zero or
  170. Overflow Error." 
  171.  
  172. To solve this problem, change the point size to above or
  173. below 96 to 103 point. Or, if your printer emulates another
  174. dot matrix printer other than the Epson 24-pin, set it up
  175. for that printer.
  176.  
  177.

  179. Harvard Graphics(R) for Windows
  180. *******************************
  181.  
  182. In some versions of Harvard Graphics for Windows, the fonts
  183. in this package may not appear in the Font menu. If this
  184. problem occurs, contact Software Publishing Corporation (SPC)
  185. for an update to Harvard Graphics.
  186.  
  187.

  189. CorelDRAW
  190. *********
  191.  
  192. If the Holiday Pi font is installed, this message may appear
  193. when you exit CorelDRAW 3.x: "General Protection Error." 
  194. The message appears if you opened the Font List, whether 
  195. or not you actually select the Flintstones font. You can 
  196. ignore this message and continue to exit the program: 
  197. It will not cause any other problems. (Always save your 
  198. CorelDRAW document before exiting.)
  199.  
  200. If you type more than five characters of the Holiday Pi or
  201. SnowCap fonts in CorelDRAW 3.x, you get this message: "String is
  202. too long for desired font. Text may be truncated." To solve
  203. this problem, try setting the text as "Paragraph Text" instead
  204. of "Artistic Text."
  205.

  208. Missing Characters
  209. ******************
  210.  
  211. The Holiday Pi and SnowCap fonts do not have characters
  212. assigned to every key on the keyboard. If one of these fonts
  213. is selected, and you press a key that does not have a
  214. character assigned to it, a blank space or a blank box may
  215. appear on the screen. (Blank boxes appear in Microsoft
  216. Word for Windows when you select Options from the Tools menu, 
  217. and then select any of the items under NonPrinting Characters. 
  218. Blank boxes may also appear when you select similar features 
  219. in Ami Pro(TM), PageMaker 4.0, and other applications.)
  220.  
  221. When you print your document containing these blank spaces
  222. or blank boxes, the spacing is not correct.
  223.  
  224. To solve these problems, select only keys that have characters 
  225. assigned to them. Check the character set charts for the 
  226. Holiday Pi and SnowCap fonts to see which keys have characters 
  227. assigned to them.

  231. Font Conversion Programs
  232. ************************
  233.  
  234. We recommend that you do not use font conversion programs to
  235. convert the fonts in this package to other font formats, such
  236. as PostScript Type 1. Although you may be able to convert the
  237. fonts, they will not print correctly.
  238.

  241. Kerning
  242. *******
  243.  
  244. All the fonts in the Winter Holiday Font Pack support kerning,
  245. except Holiday Pi. However, at the time this file was written, 
  246. most Windows applications did not support kerning with any 
  247. TrueType fonts. Contact your application vendor for 
  248. information on the application's support for kerning
  249. TrueType fonts.

  253. Screen Fonts at Small Point Sizes
  254. *********************************
  255.  
  256. Font sizes of 7 or 8 point and below appear as Windows
  257. resident fonts instead of the selected fonts on the screen.
  258. However, the fonts print correctly.
  259.  
  260.

  262. EGA Display Monitors
  263. ********************
  264.  
  265. EGA monitors have fewer pixels than VGA monitors. This means
  266. that fonts do not appear as precise on EGA monitors as on VGA
  267. monitors. However, the fonts print correctly.

  271. Removing the Fonts
  272. ******************
  273.  
  274. To remove the fonts
  275.  
  276. 1. Open the Windows Control Panel and double-click Fonts.
  277.  
  278. 2. Select a font to remove. You can select several fonts at
  279. a time.
  280.  
  281. 3. Click the Remove button. A message appears, asking you to
  282. confirm your decision to remove the font.
  283.  
  284. 4. If you want to remove the font completely from your system,
  285. click the Delete Font File from Disk check box.
  286.  
  287. 5. Click Yes. If you selected several fonts, click Yes to All.
  288.  
  289. 6. Click Close to exit the Fonts dialog box. The fonts are
  290. removed.
