- WELCOME TO "THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS!"
-
- We hope you enjoy THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS and that it
- helps make your Christmas a very merry one.
-
- This README file has some additional information and
- late-breaking news that could not make it into the User's Guide,
- as well as some important technical information that bears
- repeating here (because we know you "techies" never read manuals,
- but always read the README file!).
-
- A BIT OF HISTORY. "The Night Before Christmas" was written in
- the early 1800s by Dr. Clement C. Moore, Professor of Biblical
- Learning at General Theological Seminary in New York. He wrote it
- just for his children, and NOT for general distribution. However,
- a visitor to his home asked for a copy of the poem, and sent it
- anonymously to the Troy Sentinel newspaper of Troy, New York. The
- poem was a hit but Moore was not at all happy. He had written "A
- Compendious Lexicon of the Hebrew Language," a scholarly work, and
- did not want his name associated with a fairy tale. Nevertheless,
- his identity eventually came out and in 1838 he confessed to having
- written the poem.
-
- MEMORY REQUIREMENTS. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS requires
- approximately 500KB of RAM to run. Even when there is adequate
- total RAM to run the program there may be conflicts with other
- programs occupying memory. If you experience difficulty in
- running the program under these circumstances, please remove other
- memory-resident programs from memory.
-
- LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK DISPLAYS. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
- requires a color VGA monitor to display its high-resolution
- images. It will not work on the internal plasma or LCD monitors
- of many laptop PCs. Most laptops, however, have a connector for
- an external monitor, and the program will work fine with your
- laptop hooked to an external VGA monitor.
-
- EGA DISPLAYS. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS requires a VGA color
- monitor and will not run on EGA monitors.
-
- MOUSE SUPPORT. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS takes advantage of
- your mouse if you have one, but it does not require one. There are
- keyboard equivalents listed in the User's Guide to help you to
- enjoy the program without a mouse.
-
- SOUND. Even if you do not have a sound card or other
- specialized sound output device, THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS will
- reproduce its sounds through your computer's speaker on all but
- the oldest machines. In general, if you have an IBM AT-class (286)
- machine or its equivalent, you should be able to hear some sounds
- through the PC speaker. These sounds will not be as loud or as
- clear as from an add-on sound device, but in many cases they will
- still be quite acceptable. Normally the words in the storybook
- will get highlighted as they are read aloud. This will not happen
- however if you are configured to play sound through the PC speaker.
-
- If some sounds appear to be missing, you may not have enough
- RAM memory for them to load and play. Try unloading TSRs or device
- drivers from your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS to free memory.
-
- RUNNING THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN WINDOWS ENHANCED MODE.
- If you run the program in a DOS session under Windows, only high-
- end sound devices will work. If THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS is
- installed for the PC Speaker, a Windows' hardware conflict in
- accessing the PC's timer will prevent the program from running.
- To correct this problem, you must either 1) Run Windows in
- Standard Mode (type WIN/S at your DOS prompt) -OR- 2) Reinstall
- THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS for NO SOUND. To do so, insert the
- program disk in a drive and type INSTALL from the prompt for
- that drive. Choose U (for NO SOUND) during installation.
-
- If you change your sound device, reinstall THE NIGHT BEFORE
- CHRISTMAS as outlined in the previous paragraph.
-
- IF YOU HAVE AN 8086, 8088 OR 80286 BASED MACHINE and THE NIGHT
- BEFORE CHRISTMAS freezes after the initial screen appears, you
- should use the command line parameter "-ts". To do so, type
- TWAS -TS from your TWAS directory DOS prompt.
-
- PLEASE SEE "APPENDIX B: COMMONLY-ASKED QUESTIONS" IN
- YOUR MANUAL FOR ADDITIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION.
-
- PICTURES. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS does not include a
- screen-capture utility or any other method of capturing images
- from the program.
-
- Thanks again for your interest in THE NIGHT BEFORE
- CHRISTMAS and we hope you and your family have a very Merry
- Christmas and a Happy New Year!
