- BACKGROUND OF THIS PROGRAM:
- ---------------------------
-
- This program, first released in 1989 under the name "Small
- Business Expert," has been updated quarterly each calendar
- quarter since then. It was written, and is researched and
- updated on a weekly basis by Michael D. Jenkins, CPA and
- attorney, with a new version released each calendar
- quarter. In addition to providing frequently updated tax,
- business, and legal information for small businesses, the
- program itself has been under almost constant revision and
- expansion over the years, to make it ever-easier to use and
- more useful to you, the small business owner or adviser.
-
- We hope you have found it useful. We have appreciated all
- the very warm feedback we have received from the small
- business community and agencies and organizations such
- as SCORE, the Small Business Administration, and SmallBizNet.
-
-
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
- -----------------
-
- The author of this program, and content provider for the
- Quicken version, Mr. Jenkins, is a graduate of the Harvard
- Law School, and formerly was a tax attorney with a large
- San Francisco law firm noted for its expertise in venture
- capital matters, Cooley, Godward, Castro, Huddleson &
- Tatum.
-
- Mr. Jenkins is also a Certified Public Accountant, and
- practiced for over 4 years as a tax CPA with two of the
- "Big Six" international accounting firms, in Los Angeles
- and Honolulu, as well as being a manager and later a tax
- partner for several years with a large local CPA firm in
- the San Francisco area. He also spent several years
- practicing as an economics and business consultant in L.A.
- and Washington, D.C., with the consulting firm and private
- "think tank," Economics Research Associates. At present,
- he authors a series of business "how-to" books and runs a
- small software company, Ronin Software, which publishes this
- program and another shareware program, the financial
- takeover game/simulation, "Wall $treet Raider."
-
-
- REVIEWS:
- --------
-
- This program has received very favorable reviews in PC WORLD
- Magazine in a 1993 cover article that selected it as one of
- only 24 "instant payback" software programs, that would more
- than pay for themselves almost immediately. It was again
- chosen and reviewed very favorably in a 1994 PC WORLD cover
- article that selected Small Business Advisor as one of "the
- best of business shareware" programs. More recently, it
- received rave reviews ("...superb all-in-one information
- source...") in a full-page article in the March, 1995 issue
- of The COMPUTER SHOPPER.
-
-
- RELATED BOOK SERIES:
- --------------------
-
- Mr. Jenkins is the principal author of the book "STARTING
- AND OPERATING A BUSINESS IN @STATE."
-
- He is also author or coauthor of 50 other similarly-titled
- books, one for each of the states (plus the District of
- Columbia), all of which are published by Oasis Press (a
- division of PSI Research, of Grants Pass, Oregon -- a
- leading publisher of business books and software).
-
- Most of these 275-to-300-page how-to manuals are partially
- coauthored by local experts in the respective states (the
- local offices of the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, in
- some 30 states), and together have sold nearly a million
- copies nationwide since the initial book in the series,
- "STARTING AND OPERATING A BUSINESS IN CALIFORNIA" (now in
- its 16th annual edition) first appeared in 1981.
-
- We were honored that this book series was chosen in 1994
- by INC. MAGAZINE as one of the 6 "winners," out of all the
- hundreds of small business books INC. reviewed, in a cover
- article entitled, "IN SEARCH OF THE SMALL BUSINESS BIBLE."
- A subsequent review in the NATIONAL PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT (Sept.
- 1994 issue) said that the Starting & Operating a Business
- series of books is: "...probably THE MOST USEFUL small
- business self-help book available on the market...."
-
- Also, in November of 1996, a major article in FORBES
- Magazine concluded that most small business self-help books
- are not worth the paper they are printed on, but mentioned
- 4 such books which they did find to be very useful, one
- of which was the "Starting and Operating a Business" series.
-
- The National Small Business Journal, based in Atlanta,
- noted recently that our Georgia book edition was the number
- one selling small business book in Atlanta, in a monthly
- listing provided by the Barnes & Noble bookstore chain.
