<p class="Paragraph">In this area, specify the fonts for the formula elements you install with OpenOffice.org, i.e. the variables, functions and numbers. A font is also selected here for the texts you have inserted.</p>
<p class="Paragraph">Special characters in formulas are displayed by the font "Starmath.ttf". Starmath.ttf (for formulas) and Starbats.ttf (e.g. for bullets) are installed along with the OpenOffice.org installation. <help:switch select="System" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help"><help:case select="WIN">If you still cannot use these fonts, open the Windows\Fonts folder and double-click both one after the other. Afterwards, the fonts should be available (you may have to restart Windows).</help:case></help:switch></p>

<p class="Paragraph">At the beginning, you only see the fonts given by the program for each area in the list boxes. Behind the <span class="T1">functions</span> entry there is only the <span class="T1">Times New Roman</span> font available. If you want the function display to occasionally or always show a different font, then you can expand the list box with other fonts, so that you can then later choose among them. Use the <span class="T1">Change</span> button to expand the selection offered in the list box.</p>
<p class="Paragraph">If you want to mark individual text segments with a font other than that used for the whole text, then choose the <help:link Id="67328" Eid="font" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">FONT</help:link> command in the command window.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Select the fonts for the variables in your formula.</help:help-text> For example, in the x=SIN(y) formula, x and y will be the variables.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Select the fonts for the names and other function elements.</help:help-text> For example, the variables for the x=SIN(y) formula will be =SIN( ).</p>

<p class="Paragraph">In this area define three fonts with which you can format other text segments in the formula. The three basic fonts <span class="T1">Serif, Sans</span> and <span class="T1">Fixed </span>are available. You can add any other font to each standard installed basic font. Every font installed on your system is available for you to use. Select the <span class="T1">Change</span> button to expand the selection offered in the list box.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><a name="font"/>These custom fonts are used if you set a different font with the FONT command in the command window. As an illustration, copy the following text into the command window:</p>

<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Specify the font to be used for the <span class="T1">font serif</span> format.</help:help-text> Serifs are the small "guides" that can be seen for example, at the bottom of a capital A when the Times serif font is used. Using serifs is quite helpful since it guides a reader's eye in a straight line and can speed up reading.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Specify the font to be used in the formula for the <span class="T1">sans font</span> formatting.</help:help-text> Sans serif fonts such as Arial are commonly used for titles.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Specify the font to be used for the <span class="T1">font fixed</span> formatting.</help:help-text> Non-proportional fonts such as Courier can be used for tables.</p>
<p class="Paragraph"><help:help-text value="visible" xmlns:help="http://openoffice.org/2000/help">Click one of the choices from this pop-up menu to access the <help:link Id="67325">Fonts</help:link> dialog where you can define the font and attributes for the respective formula and for the custom fonts.</help:help-text></p>
