However, it soon became clear these servers opened and closed all the time. This left me with a list of servers of which only a few still worked. The only option I had was to try to connect to each server individually to see if it was still alive. As you can imagine - this took quite a while! WinGate 2000 solves this problem by automating the task. You can simply give it a list of wingates (or proxies, or any kind of server really!), and it will find all the servers that are still up and give you the option of updating your list. This leaves you with a fully functional list of servers! To my knowledge this is the only program of its type available - and trust me, it really is useful. When you have found some, record them in a file like this: hostname or IP [:port] The hostname or IP is required, the port option need only be used if the server is NOT on port 23. If Wingate 2000 sees an entry in the text file like: happy.proxy.com It will connect to happy.proxy.com on port 23. If it sees an entry like this: happy.wingate.com:30 It will connect to happy.wingate.com on port 30. So an example file with four entries would be: happy.proxy.net force.darkside.ny:30 cake.com 193.345.53.288 Now you need to set a server 'Timeout'. This is an amount of time in seconds that you want Wingate 2000 to wait before disconnecting from the server it is trying, and going on to the next one. A short time will mean that you may miss some of the servers that are slow or take a while to respond to a connection. A good time would be around 10 seconds. Load your list into Wingate 2000 using the 'Browse' button, and then choose 'Search'. Once all the Wingates have been scanned you will see a list of the active servers and a couple of new options will be shown. 'Update list' will update your Wingate list (ie. take out any void ones) and 'Finish' will finish the session. <a name="nEW"></a>Whats New in Release 2.0 <ul type="disc"> <li>New List reading systems which remove duplicate servers from your server lists </li> <li>Support for larger lists (50+) </li> <li>Manually specified server timeout to allow for slower servers </li> <li>Improved dialogs </li> <li>You no longer have to put ':23' after servers which are on port 23. If no port is specified in the list WinGate 2000 defaults to 23 </li> <li>The active servers are now shown after reading the list, not the inactive ones. </li> <li>Faster list updating / reading </li> <li>WinGate 2000 will now remember the location of your list file and the last timeout you specified. This makes using WinGate 2000 faster than ever! </li> <li>Misc improvements and optimisations </li> </ul> <a name="License"></a>License (Must be agreed to if you plan to use WinGate 2000) By placing/using WinGate 2000 on a computer you are to follow the rules of this license. If you plan to use, or you do use WinGate 2000 for longer than 30 days, then you are required to Register the product. If you do not wish to register after 30 days then you must remove all copies of WinGate 2000 from your computer. WinGate 2000 is freely distributable with the following restriction: 1) All files that came with the original WinGate 2000 package must be distributed together. 2) You may upload WinGate 2000 onto the Internet or any bulletin board system, so long as the only charges for downloading WinGate 2000 are that system's normal connect time charges. 3) You may include WinGate 2000 on any compilations, books, or CD-ROMs so long as those items clearly indicate that the purchase price of that item does not include the cost of registering WinGate 2000. The Software is provided on an "AS IS" basis, without warranty of any kind, including without limitation the warranties ofmerchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. The entire risk as to the quality and performance of the Software is borne by you.
