  22. RELEASE NOTES
  23.  
  24.     This is an early, experimental Beta.  Minimal testing has been
  25.     done on Intel hardware running 4.2 User with a SupraSonic modem.
  26.     Building the source distribution requires NS 3.2/3.3 Developer.
  27.     It should work with NS 3.2->4.2 User.  This release is self
  28.     contained and will not affect prior releases of GateKeeper or
  29.     PPP if you install it in a different folder.
  30.     
  31.     In this release GateKeeper and the integrated PPP daemon
  32.     communicate in a peer to peer fashion as necessary via Mach
  33.     RPC (prior releases parsed the PPP log stream).  This allows
  34.     GateKeeper to dynamically alter the behavior of the running
  35.     PPP daemon.  The current Beta only implements a subset of the
  36.     planned RPC so many things require the user to stop and start
  37.     the PPP daemon (from GK) in order for changes to take effect.
  38.  
  39.     Central to the operation of this release is "Dial on demand"
  40.     which I have enabled in the PPP daemon.  In fact this release
  41.     has no "Connect" button beyond it's Manual Dial mechanism.  
  42.     This allows GateKeeper and the PPP daemon to provide the
  43.     functionality of previous releases while operating independently
  44.     of each other.  For example, if GateKeeper is restarted while a 
  45.     PPP daemon is active it will contact the daemon and resume the
  46.     peer to peer relationship.  
  47.  
  48.     The integrated PPP package is based on the NeXT 2.3.1 release
  49.     of the free PPP as ported by Steve Perkins and others.

  54.         Architecture has been extensively reworked to support the
  55.         new model of operation.
  56.         Preferences now consists of dynamically loaded bundles.

  90.     stable release (2.1) running on your system.  During the Beta
  91.     period I will provide support without charge to those testing

  98.           of FSF GNU or other freeware work for the UNIX community

  134. BUGS
  135.  
  136.     A local nameserver is required for proper operation of
  137.     dial on demand.  A caching only configuration is ideal.
  138.     If you are using the GK 2.1 stable release you must switch
  139.     the PPP log from a FIFO to a file in GK 2.1's preferences.
  140.     If you want old Gate docs to report connection speed you
  141.     must add a line to your pppup file like: "REPORT CARRIER".

  143.     The documentation does not reflect this Beta release.
  144.     German localization has been removed from this Beta.
