  1.             Thank you for playing the Demo Version of
  2.               FREDDY PHARKAS, FRONTIER PHARMACIST!

  4. There are one or two things you should know before you play.
  5. Actually more like five or six.  Okay, nine.
  6.  
  7. 1.   Got a problem?  Blame your hardware.
  8.  
  9. 2.   The requirements to install and run the demo:
  10.  
  11.      A 286/16mhz MS-DOS compatible machine w/VGA or EGA display,
  12.      and a hard drive.  We recommend at least a 386/16mhz or
  13.      faster.
  14.  
  15.      A hard drive with approximately 1.8 megabytes of free space.
  16.  
  17.      At least 570K of free low memory.  (This translates to about
  18.      583,000 bytes.  No, we don't know why.) The more memory you 
  19.      have, the better the demo will run.  If you're having trouble 
  20.      freeing up this much low memory, let the Install program 
  21.      create a boot disk for you.
  22.  
  23.      We also highly recommend a Microsoft-compatible mouse.
  24.  
  25. 3.   To install the demo, from whichever directory or floppy
  26. contains the demo files, simply type the word INSTALL and hit the
  27. <ENTER> key.  Follow the menus and select the optimal display and
  28. sound devices.  (This demo contains digitized sound samples, so if
  29. you have a sound device that supports digitized output, be sure to
  30. use it!)  The INSTALL routine will copy the necessary files to the
  31. default directory or to the directory of your choosing.

  33. 4.   The demo will run in Windows only as a DOS application.  For
  34. maximum speed and to prevent errors from occurring with sound 
  35. devices, we highly recommend that you play this demo from DOS, 
  36. not in a DOS window.  The full FREDDY PHARKAS game, when released, 
  37. will run as a true Windows application with sizeable windows 
  38. and stuff like that there.
  39.  
  40.       If, for some inexplicable reason, you feel compelled to run
  41. this demo in a DOS Window, we have supplied an FPDEMO.PIF file and
  42. a FREDDEMO.ICO icon file for your convenience.  Consult your Windows
  43. documentation for instruction on installing a DOS application with 
  44. Windows, being sure to use the FPDEMO.PIF file.
  45.  
  46. 5.   Each cursor has what's called a "hot spot."  This hot spot 
  47. is the active portion of the cursor and needs to be used to "aim" 
  48. your action while you're playing.  The icon bar cursors (boot, 
  49. hand, glasses, etc.) each have a SMALL RED DOT to show you where 
  50. the hot spot is.  With the inventory item cursors, you'll have to 
  51. experiment.  Let it be a challenge to you!
  52.  
  53. 6.   The demo doesn't allow you to save or restore games.  The real
  54. game does. 
  55.  
  56. 7.   The interactive portion of the demo is on a TIMER.  If you do
  57. not give any commands to the demo for TWO MINUTES, it will
  58. automatically go to the BALLAD without saving your position or
  59. anything!  Surprise!
  60.  
  61. You can, however, pause the interactive portion of the demo simply by
  62. placing the cursor at the top of the screen so that the icon bar is
  63. activated.  The timer turns off when the icon bar is active.
  64.  
  65. 8.    The RIGHT MOUSE button can be used to skip conversations or 
  66. text.  But be careful; the text, including dialogue, can contain 
  67. crucial information or clues.
  68.  
  69. 9.    If you successfully complete the demo, Whittlin' Willie 
  70. (the narrator) gives you 49 out of 50 points.  THIS IS A JOKE!  
  71. There are NO points in the demo, and subsequently there's no 
  72. way to get 50 out of 50.
  73.      
  74. Why did we tell you this?  Simple.  Because there's a saying:
  75. "Nobody reads the README file."  Well, obviously YOU are the
  76. one glorious exception to the rule, so we're rewarding you by 
  77. saving you the trouble of hunting endlessly for the missing 1
  78. point.
