- I Introduction
-
- Paranoid is a high-grade game in the style of Arkanoid. To play
- Paranoid, you will need the following kit:
-
- Colour EGA / VGA display;
- MS-DOS v3.00 or later.
-
- The release disk should contain the following files:
-
- Paranoid.COM - the game itself;
- BitMaps.PAR - pictures file;
- Levels.PAR - levels file;
- Fonts.PAR - fonts file;
- Paranoid.DOC - the file you are reading.
-
- If any of the top four files is missing, Paranoid will not run.
- There is also a high score table file, HiScores.PAR. If this is
- missing, Paranoid will create a new one. To reset the high scores,
- delete this file.

- III Installing Paranoid
-
- To install Paranoid you will need to copy the files listed above
- into a new directory on your hard drive. If you are running from a
- floppy system, then ensure that the disk is not write-protected as
- Paranoid needs to be able to modify the high score table.
-
-
-
-
-
- IV Running Paranoid
-
- To use paranoid, move to the directory which contains the files and
- type
-
- PARANOID
-
- followed by Return. The game will then load and run. Should any of
- the files that Paranoid needs be missing, a list of missing files
- will be displayed so you can re-load them from the release disk.
-
- Paranoid can also be used in a special quiet mode which allows the
- game to be run without the sound effects. To achieve this, invoke
- Paranoid with the command line
-
- PARANOID /Q
-
- and the sound will be disabled.
-
- Before running, Paranoid checks that you have an appropriate video
- card installed. However, there may be problems with some cards, in
- that Paranoid will not run even though an EGA card is present. If
- you are sure that your video system is suitable, but Paranoid will
- not run, then the auto video-detect may be disabled with the command
- line
-
- PARANOID /V
-
- and Paranoid will run without checking that the video system is
- suitable.
-
- Both command line switches may be used at once if you wish to skip
- the video auto-detect and run in quiet mode. To achieve this, type
-
- PARANOID /Q /V
-
- as the command line.
-
-
-

-
- V Playing Paranoid
-
- The idea of the game Paranoid is to demolish the bricks at the top
- of the screen by hitting a ball at them with a bat. To allow great
- precision in deciding which bricks to destroy, hitting the ball with
- the left hand edge of your bat will make the ball bounce to the left;
- if, on the other hand, you hit the ball with the right hand edge of
- your bat, the ball bounces to the right. The nearer the edge of your
- bat the ball strikes, the steeper the angle at which the ball bounces
- off. This will become clear after a few minutes' play.
-
- Once you have destoyed all the bricks, you will go on to another
- screenful of ball-bouncing fun. To make your task easier, you will
- be awarded an extra ball every four thousand points.
-
- Some of the bricks are tougher than others and require two or more
- hits to destroy. On each hit, they change their appearance until
- finally they disappear. Also, some bricks contain icons which are
- released when the brick is hit. These then float gently down the
- screen until they reach the bottom, where they can be caught by your
- bat. To catch an icon, simply run into it with the bat. Most icons
- are useful, but others are best avoided.
-
- More instructions are available from the game - press F1 to peruse
- them.
