- HOME RUN DERBY
- An MVP Software Production
- By Dan Hilton
- copyright 1995 Dan Hilton
-
-
- HOME RUN DERBY is an exciting simulation of an all-time home run
- hitting contest. It takes a good eye and a lot of practice to be
- able to hit the long ball consistently. Good Luck.
-
- Home Run Derby is shareware. The few dollars you paid for this
- shareware version goes does not go to the author. It is simply the
- modest fee you pay to try the software. You are free to evaluate
- this software. If you like it or find it useful, you must register
- with MVP Software by purchasing the Home Run Derby Trilogy. When
- you purchase the trilogy you will receive the latest version,
- including all three stadiums, 30 players from all time periods in
- baseball history, a printed manual, and a free offer on all other
- MVP shareware games.
-
- Thanks for playing Home Run Derby and for supporting shareware.

- INSTALLATION
- ------------
- If you downloaded this file from a BBS, you don't need to run
- Install. If you purchased an evaluation disk from a shareware
- vendor or the story, follow these directions.
-
- To install Home Run Derby, place the diskette into the A drive and
- type A:, or into the B drive and type B:. When the A> or B> prompt
- appears on the screen, type INSTALL. Follow the directions to
- install the software.
-
- To begin the game type Derby.
-
- NOTE TO WINDOWS USERS
- ---------------------
- Home Run Derby might run as a DOS application, spawned under
- Windows, but you may encounter sound card conflicts. The best
- solution if you run into conflicts is to completely exit from
- Windows before starting Home Run Derby. Clicking on the DOS prompt
- is NOT exiting Windows. You must actually close your Windows
- session.
-
- We strongly recommend that you terminate Windows completely before
- running Home Run Derby and run the game directly from DOS.
-
- MAKING A CLEAN BOOT DISK
- ------------------------
- If you encounter problems running Home Run Derby there may be a
- conflict between it and a program resident in memory. Here's a way
- to avoid the conflict.
-
- Place a blank, unformatted diskette into drive A of your computer.
- Then type
-
- FORMAT A:/S/U
-
- and press enter. When the computer is finished formatting the disk
- and copying the system files to it, press the RESET button on your
- computer or the ALT-CTRL-DEL keys at the same time. After your
- computer has rebooted, go to the Home Run Derby directory and play
-
- the game. If it runs, there is a conflict between a resident
- program loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file. Whenever
- you want to play Home Run Derby, simply reboot your computer with
- the boot disk you have created.

-
- MAIN MENU
- ---------
- The main menu has four options.
-
- HOME RUN DERBY - begins the home run hitting tournament.
- PRACTICE - gives you the chance to test your skills in a
- practice round.
- HALL OF FAME - displays the all time greats.
- SETUP - allows you set the time number of outs for each round,
- set up the system speed, and specify the sound options.
- EXIT - exit the game.
-
- SETUP
- -----
- The SETUP option allows you to change game settings. Move the
- flashing box to the desired menu item with the arrow keys. Press
- <ENTER>. The arrow keys will now cycle through available options.
- Press <ENTER> to accept the displayed option. OUTS PER ROUND is the
- number of outs you get per round. SPEED determines the running
- speed for the game. The number represents percentage maximum
- running speed. On faster computers, you will need to set the SPEED
- percent to 80 percent or so. This will slow down the game to where
- it is playable. If your computer is not particularly fast, you may
- want to set SPEED at 100 percent. Experiment until you find the
- speed that is right for your computer. The sound option allows you
- to turn the sound and music on or off. With the sound off there
- will be no sound at all. When the game is setup the way you like
- it, move to the DONE box and press <ENTER>. You will be returned to
- the MAIN MENU.
-
- PRACTICE
- --------
- It is said that hitting the pitching of a major leaguer is the
- toughest thing to do in all sports. So it can take some practice to
- be competitive in HOME RUN DERBY. Choosing the practice option
- allows you to take a few cuts in the batters box. The pitcher will
- throw all the pitches he's got, so you will have to be on your toes.
- Every pitch could potentially be hit out of the park. All you need
- to do is swing the bat to the right portion of the strike zone, at
- the right time. This can be more difficult than it sounds. The
- pitcher throws the ball to one of 9 positions in the strike zone
- (for a right handed hitter):
-

-
- Press the key on the number keypad which corresponds to the pitch
- position, and at the right time, and the ball will be long gone.
-
- HOME RUN DERBY
- --------------
- Well, this is it. Your chance at fame and immortality. I know it
- can make you nervous to know that you'll have to go up against the
- likes of JUNIOR GRIFFIN JR., BARTY BUNDS, and HURT THOMAS. Just try
- to get a hold of yourself. And even if you can beat them, you'll
- still have to face the all time greatest hitters.
-
- After you have taken the HOME RUN DERBY option from the main menu,
- you will go to the player setup screen. Use the arrow keys to move
- the flashing box to highlight the option you wish to change. Press
- <ENTER>. The arrow keys will now cycle through available options.
- Press <ENTER> when the option is the way you like it. The nickname
- option lets you set your players nickname. The PA announcer will
- refer to your player by this name. The skill level option allows
- you to set the difficulty level. If you select rookie, the pitcher
- will not throw nearly as many different types of pitches as on the big
- league level.
-
- NOTE: Each player can specify his own skill level, so that beginning
- players can compete with experienced players. You can set whether
- your player bats right or left handed, and adjust the uniform colors
- as well. Go to DONE when you are ready to continue. You will be
- asked whether you want to have another player in the tournament. If
- you select yes, you will go through the process for another player.
- If you select no, you will move on to the HOME RUN DERBY.
-
- Once all the player information has been entered, we go to the TV
- studio where Skip Smiley and Bob Yukon are waiting to start their
- broadcast. Press <ENTER> or <SPACE> after you have read each of their
- comments. The <ESC> key will allow you to move quickly through
- all of the comments. They will look at the bracket so that you can
- see who you will have to face in the first round. Bob Yukon will
- make predictions about the first round matchups; then it is time for
- the first round action.
-
- You will see a graphic for each matchup. To start each game, press
- <ENTER> or <SPACE>. If the matchup is two computer-controlled
- players, you will see a final score. Watching the scores is a good
- way to see which players are going to be toughest to beat. If the
- matchup is between a computer player and a human player, you will
- get to watch live action. The human player is represented by a
- blank face. The PA announcer will notify you when you are up to
- bat. Do your best! You'll have to concentrate to win. Remember,
- there are no time limits in baseball. "It ain't over, till it's
- over!"
-
- After all of the first round matchups are complete, you'll return to
- the studio for a brief exchange between Skip and Bob, and a look at
- the second round matchups. If you keep on winning all the way
- through the final, you can get into the HALL OF FAME!
-
- HALL OF FAME
- ------------
- Choosing the HALL OF FAME option allows you to view the ten all-time
- greatest home run hitters. To make the Hall of Fame, you
- have to win the home run derby, and have a home run hitting
- percentage that is high enough to get you into the top ten. Hall of
- famers are ranked not only by percentage, but also by skill level.
- A big league hitter will always merit a higher spot than a AAA
- hitter.
-
- QUITTING THE GAME
- -----------------
- You can press <CTRL Q> at almost any time during the game to get a
- chance to return to the main menu. From the main menu you can
- select EXIT TO DOS which will exit the game.
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- -------------------
- HOME RUN DERBY requires an IBM compatible computer with 560k base
- memory free. A SoundBlaster card is optional, but is required to
- hear the background music, and to have optimum clarity in hearing
- the digitized comments. SoundBlaster support requires 512k free
- extended memory.
