  15.        P&BNet espouses diversity in creativity. If your users are mostly
  16.        mature individuals who enjoy creativity and creative stimulus,
  17.        who do not need rules for conduct but conduct themselves with
  18.        wit and style, who enjoy a wide range of interests but would
  19.        rather not try to categorize each one... you've found the right
  20.        network for your BBS.

  22.        We don't call ourselves an "elite group" but somehow, that
  23.        description fits.

  25.        First and foremost, we are writers and artists.  Some of us have
  26.        publications on the shelves at the local bookstores; others have
  27.        artwork in various museums and galleries.  Above all, we share
  28.        the same muse - that dream we fall into when we create.
  29.  
  30.        Many of us are professional publishers, too, and writers will
  31.        find a tremendous research, reference and electronic publishing
  32.        resource with P&BNet.
  33.  
  34.        We also are a friendly lot with many interests, including
  35.        landscape arts (gardening <g>), cooking, birdwatching, and some
  36.        of the sciences such as astronomy.  In order to keep our network
  37.        focused, we primarily offer conferences for networking between
  38.        writers and artists; but to not constrain ourselves to ONLY 
  39.        those topics. To allow some free-flowing ideas exchange, we don't
  40.        hamper creativity within the bounds of a "conference."  We use
  41.        the conferences for focus, but we don't want to stop a fascinating
  42.        thread that has gone askew of the subject matter.  You see?
  43.        There is a balance... and we do our best to enjoy it.

  45.           If you can use a mail door, you can join P&BNet.
  46.      
  47.      There are many "mail tossers" that extract messages from your
  48.      BBS, put them into a QWK packet, and import them to your
  49.      network HUB.  Then they will accept a QWK packet from your
  50.      HUB and import them as a REPLY packet into your BBS. Some
  51.      examples of these "mail tossers" are RNET, QNET and MNET.
  52.  
  53.      Better than a mail tosser is a mailstore software, and we
  54.      are using Postlink.  This software is briefly described
  55.      in our packet (in another file).  It allows you to send
  56.      and receive files from any bbs on the network, route
  57.      private messages to specific bbs's, and even network
  58.      individually between other bbs's by claiming private
  59.      and local channels between yourselves. It is technologically
  60.      advanced enough to support objects routing, yet it is
  61.      still continually being improved and additionally developed.
  62.  
  63.      If you can afford the $50 fee, it's well worth the money.
  64.  
  65.      If you are already set up with Postlink for another network, 
  66.      you're in great shape to access P&BNet from one of our 
  67.      Postlink-capable regional hubs.
  68.  
  69.      If you are a FIDONET participant, you can use our FIDO HUB
  70.      for .QWK mail transfers of P&BNet mail.

  133.      keep the network amicable.

  136.      veer away from the original topic of a thread.

  138.  We do have a few Conference Hosts. These volunteers are leaders
  139.  in their respective fields and therefore are subject matter experts.
  140.  It's their job to help people, focus attention on the subject matter,
  141.  and enlighten everyone with news as it occurs.  We do not want to
  142.  turn our CH's into some sort of police force and therefore ask the local
  143.  SysOp to help out by using common sense and good communication skills
  144.  to prevent, neutralize or "moderate" any bad vibes that may occur between
  145.  users.

  154.  Network Concepts

  156.       NODE           A  bulletin board  system that calls  another
  157.              bulletin  board  system (a hub)  in order  to
  158.              transfer mail.  A node  doesn't receive its mail
  159.              directly from any other BBS  (that is, no one
  160.              calls it to transfer mail.)
  161.                    
  162.       HUB            A  bulletin board system which may or may not
  163.              call another hub system in  order to transfer
  164.              mail,  but is called by one or more  nodes to
  165.              transfer mail.
  166.  
  167.       REGIONAL HUB   A hub  which calls  another hub  in order  to
  168.              transfer  mail.  It's  called a  regional hub
  169.              because  when designing a  network, a  hub is
  170.              usually placed  in each of the  major regions
  171.              serviced in order  to minimize long  distance
  172.              phone charges.

  186.  P&BNetHub is the NATIONAL HUB because it does not call anyone for mail.
  187.  BBS1 and BBS2 are NODES, directly linked to P&BNetHub.  BBS3 and BBS4 are
  188.  nodes connected to RUBYS.  RUBYS is a node of P&BNetHub and also a
  189.  REGIONAL HUB since it calls P&BNetHub to transfer mail.

  191.  Each hub that is a regional hub  has a HUB ID.  This ID is used by the
  192.  regional hub to identify itself when it calls the hub "above" it to
  193.  transfer mail.  The network shown above would consist of four nodes, one
  194.  regional hub and one national hub (P&BNetHub).

  247. P&BNetHub distributes electronic publications through the use of
  248. the QMAIL mail door.  If you can possibly afford another mail door,
  249. please consider using this fine Sparkware product. QMAIL is not only
  250. netmail capable, it features automated "subscriptions" to electronic 
  251. magazines, which is something we as a group, enthusiastically support.
