- Information and addendum file regarding the information program and application
- generator program, PROGNET.EXE. PLEASE READ THIS!

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This program is designed to provide you with a convenient, easy-to-use interface
- to learn about ProgNet. It will also generate an application for you. This
- spares you from having to load up a text editor or word processor and fill in
- an application file. It also keeps things standardized for the coordinator and
- the applications officers.
-
- If you have never participated in a message network before or have no idea what
- a message network is, this program will explain the concept to you.
-
- If you have a copy of the old PROGNET.ZIP or PN-YYMM.ZIP, DELETE IT AND ALL FILES
- CONTAINED WITHIN IT. If you have already completed an old-form application, but
- haven't submitted it yet, please use this program to generate the application.
- If you have already submitted an old-form application, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT!
-
- From now on we will be using the form PN-YYMM.ZIP (YY = year, MM = month) as our
- filename to prevent confusion among the BBS sysops.
-
- Recently added to this archive is a file called PROGNET.INF for your users.
- If you choose to join, we encourage you to post this as a bulletin on your
- system. It explains the theory of a message network and what ProgNet is all
- about.
-
- A few notes about the program:
- ■ The program writes directly to video memory; this cannot be circumvented
- in any way at this time.
- ■ When viewing the conference and BBS listings, one may use Page Up,
- Page Down, Cursor Up, and Cursor Down to move throughout the file.
- Press Esc to return to the main menu.
- ■ In the second application screen, the space bar, the enter key, or the
- "X" key will "check off" the box where the cursor is.
- ■ The program is designed so that it will look equally well on monochrome
- and color systems.
- ■ If you do not experience "snow" during direct video writes (this occurrs
- only with older CGA's, not the monochrome adapter, EGA, or VGA), invoke
- the program using "PROGNET NOSNOW" to gain slightly faster video writes.
-
- Version 1.2 Update
- ------------------
- Version 1.0 had two mistakes in the code that generated the application.
- No bugs have been reported in the user interface yet. The problems involved
- the tampering check & networking method. Both have been corrected. Please
- delete version 1.0 if you have it or see it on another BBS, and use this
- version to generate your application.
-
- Version 1.3 Update
- ------------------
- There were no bugs, reported or otherwise, in the 1.2 release, however,
- there has been a SIGNIFICANT change in the admissions policy that makes things
- MUCH easier to get onto the network. Therefore, the screens and the code that
- generates the application had to be modified accordingly.
-
- Version 1.4 Update
- ------------------
- Explanation of PCRelay interfacing provided as we have a new gateway
- regional for this purpose.
-
- Version 2.0 Update
- ------------------
- What started out as a minor change to the applications generator to
- account for the newly added FIDO capabilities ended up in several major
- additions, rewrites, and bug fixes. First, ProgNet now has FIDO capability.
- Consequently, a FIDO-style node listing is included (PROGLIST.### where ###
- is a three-digit number) as well as a nice little parser to view the node
- listing from within the information kit. The applications screen is also a
- little less complex. Previously the user would "check off" the mail processor
- and mail door that he would be using. Now he can just enter the name manually.
- I also decided that 3-line comments could be incorporated into the application
- incase if a sysop wished to make a note about additional phone numbers, say
- something about his system, etc.
- There was also a small bug in the text entry procedure that was hardly
- noticeable. If one was typing over some characters in the text that he had
- already entered and continued typing PAST the end of the text previously
- entered, then that text would be lost. This has been corrected.
-
- ADDENDUM - READ THIS!!
- ----------------------
- This section contains recent updates to the information kit that were
- not included because they will be "old news" in a month or two, or the
- situation could change:
- ■ ProgNet DOES NOT need any more regionals in the United States
- We can still use some more overseas, though!
- ■ If you plan on echoing using PC-Relay through our gateway
- regional (the only PC-Relay system at this time), Chuck has
- told me that he will provide you with a complete listing of
- conference assignments and a script for his system.
