  6. General Comments 
  7. ----------------
  8.      If you have a registered copy of the Message Finder System, 
  9. you should now have in your possession a floppy disk containing 
  10. the system.  Before proceeding you may wish to make a backup copy 
  11. of this disk.  If you obtained the system as the shareware file 
  12. MFS204.ZIP, you should now unzip that file preferably onto an empty 
  13. formatted floppy disk (which will become your backup copy after 
  14. installation.)

  16.      Version 2.04 of the Message Finder System (MFS) is written for 
  17. use with the Off-Line Xpress (OLX) Version 2.1 (or OLXTD or SLMR) 
  18. off-line reader, or the Blue Wave Vers. 2.10 off-line reader systems. 
  19. OLXTD is the shareware "test-drive" version of OLX, while SLMR (Silly 
  20. Little Mail Reader) is a predecessor version of OLX, which is said to 
  21. be essentially identical. This version of the Message Finder System 
  22. will NOT function correctly with the recently released version 3.0 of 
  23. OLX. This version of MFS also requires the PKWARE system (Vers 1.01) 
  24. for file compression/decompression system, and the Alpha 4 
  25. file-management system (Vers. 2.0 or 2.1) It may be possible to 
  26. operate the system with other file-management systems having
  27. import/export capability, although I have not tested the system with 
  28. any of these systems.

  30.      If this is an INITIAL installation and if you are already
  31. using Alpha 4, first check the directory used for execution of
  32. Alpha 4 (the directory containing A4.EXE).  There should be NO
  33. files in that directory named: A4.ITM, OLXINP.SCP, FIND1.SCP, or
  34. FINDX.SCP  If any of these files already exist, they should be
  35. renamed if possible, before executing MFINSTAL.EXE for the first
  36. time.  If you are unable to rename these files, consult with the
  37. author of this system before proceeding. If this is an UPDATE,
  38. the above files will already be in existence.  During an update
  39. with MFINSTAL.EXE, these files will be reloaded with updated
  40. versions, if any.  Otherwise none of the Alpha 4 data-base files 
  41. will be disturbed.

  43.      Please read the Message Finder System Documentation (file
  44. MSGFIND.DOC) carefully before executing MFINSTAL.EXE. This file
  45. may be printed by entering: COPY MSGFIND.DOC PRN from the
  46. directory containing that file, e.g. when entering from floppy
  47. disk.

  49.      If you find this system to be useful, and intend to continue 
  50. using it, I would appreciate your registration for this use.  A 
  51. registration form is included in the documentation and for your 
  52. convenience as a separate file, MSGFIND.REG. Whether you register 
  53. or not, I would greatly appreciate your comments. 
  54. Is the documentation clear?  Easy to understand?  Do you have any 
  55. suggestions for program additions or modifications.  Also when you 
  56. write your comments, I would like to know EXACTLY what system you 
  57. are using with MFS -- both hardware and interface software, i.e. 
  58. off-line reader software version, etc.

  60. Modifications from Earlier Versions
  61. -----------------------------------
  62.  
  63.      Version 2.03 of MFS corrected several minor problems which
  64. were discovered after the original 2.01 and 2.02 beta-test
  65. versions were issued.  In addition, the system was modified so
  66. that it could accommodate either Vers. 2.0 or 2.1 of the Alpha-4
  67. file-management system.  
  68.  
  69.      Version 2.04 of MFS includes additional corrections and
  70. modifications of earlier versions. Some of the following changes
  71. included in this version were recommended by beta-tester Bob
  72. Perkins, to whom I am deeply indebted:

  74. 1) Made it possible to specify location for ZIP file during
  75. installation, i.e. on floppy or hard-drive directory.
  76. 2) Made it possible to use different disk drives for the off-line
  77. reader and for MFS.
  78. 3) When OL.BAT finished input of message header data, control was
  79. left at the Utility Menu. This version ends at the Main Menu
  80. 4) Documentation was revised to emphasize operation of the system
  81. in the preferred manner using OL.BAT for data entry and using a
  82. Script command in Alpha 4 to initiate a lookup.
  83. 5) Set up a Browse table option to place less-important
  84. information, i.e. File Name and message number and date/time on
  85. the right-hand side. Include comments in documentation.
  86. 6) Fix last comment box in OLTODB. Reference to script names not
  87. quite right.
  88. 7) Include a Work Sheet for users convenience in installation.
  89. 8) Modify scripts so a single version is called using either
  90. Alpha 4 Vers. 2.0 or 2.1.
  91. 9) Modify lookup scripts to include shell to DOS, and dialog box
  92. on what to do next.
  93. 10) Include comments in documentation to save message packet from
  94. communications system directory into off-line reader directory. 
  95. 11) Add short pause after every seven messages entering the Alpha
  96. 4 data base.
  97. 12) Fix MFINSTAL to copy proper Alpha 4 version of MSG.SCP into
  98. data-base directory.
