- DIXIE-NET
-
- After starting up my BBS, The Corn Cobb, I quickly decided that the
- fastest way to start the message base off right was by joining a
- network. I downloaded FrontDoor and TriDog and proceeded to setup FD and
- had visions of joining Fido. After many hours spent trying to track down
- the correct hub to obtain a node address, I finally decided that Fido was
- not for me. During my BBS "career", I had spent many hours on User to User
- and Absolutl(e)y Temporary. I had joined in on many of the discussions on
- U'NI Net and was impressed with both the range of topics covered and with
- the quality of the arguments and opinions offered. Also, I program for a
- living and programming interests me very much. With all this in mind I
- joined ProgNet and U'NI Net and proceeded to realy pack my message base.
- Then I "discovered" and joined TriNet.
-
- Still, something was lacking on my BBS. I live in the South and am
- fascinated by Southern facts. Let's face it, we here in the South live a
- much slower lifestyle and are less influenced by the trends that abound in
- the "modern" day world. Also, football reigns king supreme in the fall with
- NASCAR taking up the slack during the "rest" of the year.
-
- So, in order to hopefully bring a more "southern" lifestyle to the BBS
- community I have decided to launch DIXIE-Net. A network for SOUTHERN BBS's
- that is devoted to SOUTHERN interests. Much like our beloved Kudzu, my
- prayer is that Dixie-Net will soon spread across the south linking those of
- use who appreciate the southern way of life to-gether.
-
- Well, 3 days after this missive was penned, Dixie-Net has grown WAY beyond
- my expectations. We are currently up to 1 State Hub, 4 nodes and myself!
- The friendships that have already been formed are ones that *I* believe
- will continue to grow and blossom over the years....who knows, we could
- even end up having a Dixie-Net convention one day! Well anyway, I really
- wanted to add a THANK YOU to all of you who have responded so positively
- so far, especially LARRY GUNTER at The Bald Eagle. Larry has been a
- workhorse for me, he has been spreading the gospel (er Kudzu) and
- grabbing people to join up. THANKS Larry....you are truly inspirational
- and I APPRECIATE the confidence and support!!

- We are now up to 14+ boards and the list keeps growing. Even though we are
- currently in the start of gardening season and summer it continues to amaze
- me over how fast the net is growing! And, like anything good, our growth has
- forced some changes...we have applied for Trademark protection, copyrighted
- the name, logo (soon to be released!) and the conferences. Not that any of
- this is really "neccessary", I felt that it would be in the net's best interest
- to protect what so many have worked to build. Again, MANY thanks to all those
- folks who decided to try us out...they have not been sorry and neither have I!

- Well, after a nerve racking summer....back surgery, getting laid off from my
- job, starting a new job, quitting that noe when I was recalled etc I
- FINALLY got The Corn Cobb back up and online. I owe a debt of gratitude and
- tons of thanks to Anita Abney for assuming duties as Net Administrator
- during my abscence. We lsot some nodes and gained some hubs, but on
- January 23rd, 1993 The Corn Cobb resumed acting as net hub and a new era of
- message traffic begins for Dixie-Net.

- Changes, changes. After much thought and consideration, I have decided to
- add many more conferences and allow any BBS country wide to join into
- Dixie-Net. Sam Creel of Tessla's Coil and Lamar Smith of The Night Watch
- have been of great help in pointing DN in a decent direction. By opening up
- Dixie to the rest of the country it is hoped that the net will really take
- off. We also entered into an agreement with Sam to be the exclusive
- distribution method of the WildCat! Ansi support conference. Hopefully this
- will allow for greater and better exposure.
