- Synchronet for OS/2 Answers to Frequently Asked Questions 03/26/96
- ------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Q. How much is a Synchronet for OS/2 node license?
- A. The retail price is exactly $50 more than the DOS version:
-
- Node Synchronet for DOS Synchronet for OS/2
- License Download w/Manual Download w/Manual
- ------- -------- -------- -------- --------
- 1 $79 $99 $129 $149
- 2 $129 $149 $179 $199
- 4 $179 $199 $229 $249
- 8 $279 $299 $329 $349
- 16 $379 $399 $429 $449
- 250 $479 $499 $529 $549
-
- Note: Licenses sold with manuals are shipped (shipping and handling charges
- apply). CA state sales tax applies to CA residents. Download ORDER.TXT
- for current order form. The above prices do NOT apply to purchasers
- of SBBS4DOS prior to v2.3 (see next question).
-
- Q. I already have SBBS4DOS. Do I need a different key file to run SBBS4OS2?
- A. Yes. When you "type" your SBBS.KEY file from the DOS prompt, it will say
- "License Op Systems: 3" if you have an OS2/DOS key file. If it says 1, then
- you need to obtain a new key file (a $25 upgrade from SBBS4DOS v2.2).
- The OS2/DOS key file can be used for either SBBS4DOS or SBBS4OS2 (or both
- at the same time). Call our BBS and use the online shopping door to place
- your order. You willl be able to download your new key within 48 hours.
-
- Q. Can I mix SBBS4DOS and SBBS4OS2 nodes on the same BBS?
- A. Yes. Registering/Upgrading-to SBBS4OS2 leaves your SBBS4DOS license intact.
-
- Q. Can I run DOS external programs (doors etc) under SBBS4OS2?
- A. Yes.
-
- Q. Can I run native OS/2 external programs under SBBS4OS2?
- A. Yes.
-
- Q. Can I use IBM's COM.SYS (included with OS/2)?
- A. No. Initial testing showed this driver to have bugs that were fatal to
- SBBS4OS2. Get a copy of SIO.SYS (from Ray Gwinn) and register it. SIO is
- available for download on our BBS. COM.SYS may work on your system, but
- we do not gaurantee it. We have tested SBBS4OS2 w/SIO rigorously.
-
- Q. Do I still need to use SVDMANSI?
- A. Yes (assuming you still want to run DOS externals).
-
- Q. How many nodes can I run on my system?
- A. There are too many variables to give an accurate estimate. The performance
- of SBBS4OS2 is greatly improved over SBBS4DOS when running multiple nodes
- under OS/2. You'll have to experiment and decide how many nodes you can run
- comfortably on your system. The more time users spend in DOS external
- programs, the less benefit your system will receive from running SBBS4OS2.
- OS/2 VDMs require a larger percentage of system resources than do native
- OS/2 windows and applications. The fewer DOS programs your system runs,
- the better.
-
- Q. Can I make my SBBS4OS2 nodes available for telnet?
- A. Yes. SBBS v2.3 now supports verbal modem result codes, so among other
- advantages, you can now use Ray Gwinn's VMODEM to link TCP/IP to your nodes
- (works with SBBS4DOS or SBBS4OS2).
-
- Q. How do I configure native OS/2 programs to only execute on nodes running
- SBBS4OS2?
- A. Use the DOS and OS2 ARS keywords to configure separate programs for the
- same functions.
