  80. This package contains the VENDINFO(TM) Basic Toolset, v1.30, by Rams'
  81. Island Software.  This version corrects a problem affecting distribution
  82. of shareware products via the Software Distribution Network (SDN),
  83. improves the VENDINFO.DOZ file that can be used in connection with
  84. CD-ROM submissions, and adds several new operating systems to the
  85. platform requirements section of VENDINFO files.

  87. In particular, if you're creating VENDINFO.DOZ files, there are now
  88. automated content checks available near the end of the DOZ export screen.
  89. These will help insure that you have provided the appropriate
  90. information for each of the various possible uses of the DOZ file.

  129. ===== Installation =====================================

  131. To install the VENDINFO Basic Toolset, simply unzip or copy all files
  132. into a single directory, which will be devoted to VendEdit.  If you are
  133. an author, or you expect to create VENDINFO records for testing
  134. purposes, you should plan to leave all these files in that directory.
  135. If you are a distributor, and plan to use only VendPrcs, then it will
  136. eventually be appropriate for you to place VENDPRCS.EXE on your path,
  137. and many of these materials will not be needed after your
  138. familiarization with the toolset is complete.
  139.  
  140. Once you've installed this package:
  141.  
  142.    o  If you're an author, or wish to try out VendEdit, simply
  143.       execute the command "VENDEDIT" WHILE IN THE VendEdit DIRECTORY.
  144.       Select "Help", and read through the first few items in the
  145.       help index.  You should find all the information you need.
  146.  
  147.    o  If you're a distributor, or wish to try out VendPrcs, you
  148.       should begin by reading VENDPRCS.DOC.  For authors, the
  149.       basic VendPrcs functions are executed automatically from
  150.       VendEdit.

  152. You may also wish to obtain and install the VendView viewer. It is
  153. available for use without charge, but is packaged separately from
  154. VendEdit because it is also used by end users who have no need for the
  155. VendEdit or VendPrcs programs. VendView is generally obtainable as
  156. VNDVUExx.ZIP, where "xx" represents the version number. If VendView is
  157. installed, the user of VendEdit will be able to make use of it in
  158. reviewing any VENDINFO.DIZ files that are created. It is a significant
  159. convenience.

  166. The evaluation ("shareware") version of the VENDINFO toolset is provided
  167. for evaluation only, on an "as is" basis.  The registered version is
  168. provided with a 30-day money-back guarantee, provided all materials are
  169. returned, and -- in the case of the editor -- no products have been
  170. distributed with included VENDINFO files.  This toolset is intended for
  171. use by producers and distributors of shareware and similar products, who
  172. are assumed to be familiar with the use of software tools.  The included
  173. tools allow both production and evaluation of VENDINFO files, and
  174. provide all the capabilities necessary for the user to verify correct
  175. functioning of those tools for his/her purposes.  Users are advised to
  176. do so.

  178. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, RAMS' ISLAND SOFTWARE

  206. copyrighted products of Rams' Island Software and are protected by
  207. United States copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.

  209. All rights not expressly granted here are reserved to Rams' Island
  210. Software.  The use or distribution of these products is expressly
  211. prohibited, except as authorized by the terms of this agreement.

  213. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile,
  214. disassemble, otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed
  215. program except as provided in this agreement.

  217. U.S. Government Restricted Rights:  Use, duplication, or disclosure
  218. by the U.S. Government of the computer software and documentation in
  219. this package shall be subject to restrictions as set forth in

  225. LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO TRIAL USE OF EVALUATION VERSION

  227. Rams' Island Software grants you a limited license to use this software
  228. for evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed thirty days.

  230. During this evaluation period, you may make full use of the VENDINFO
  231. toolset, with the following exception, applicable only to the VendEdit
  232. editor.

  234.    You MAY NOT distribute VENDINFO.DIZ files that lack authentication
  235.    codes.  These codes are tied to your company name, and are produced
  236.    only by the registered version of VendEdit.  They are intended to
  237.    provide a level of source authentication for your VENDINFO.DIZ files.

  239. If you continue using this software after the thirty-day evaluation
  240. period, or wish to produce "authenticated" VENDINFO.DIZ files for
  241. distribution with your products, you MUST make the prescribed
  242. registration payment to Rams' Island Software.  (NOTE: Single-line
  243. BBSes which are not associated with a business, and which do not charge
  244. fees to their users, may register VendPrcs without charge; see

  250. The software and the disks on which it is contained are licensed on
  251. a non-exclusive basis to you, the purchaser, for your own use.  You

  254. If you have purchased a license to use the VendEdit editor, you may
  255. also make use of the VendPrcs processor for the purpose of verifying
  256. correct functioning of VendEdit and correct contents of the VENDINFO.DIZ
  257. files you produce.  Any other use of VendPrcs requires a separate
  258. license.  Similarly, purchase of a VendPrcs license allows you to use
  259. VendEdit to verify correct functioning of VendPrcs, but does not imply
  260. a license for other use of VendEdit.

  262. You may use the licensed software on a single personal computer system,
  263. and make as many copies as needed for backup and archival purposes.

  268. LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO ALL USE OF VendEdit EDITOR

  270. A fundamental goal of the VENDINFO system is that distributors must be
  271. able to rely upon automated testing to determine whether or not they
  272. may distribute your products.  Therefore, any VENDINFO file which is
  273. distributed with your products must satisfy these conditions:

  275.    It must be an "authenticated" file, containing valid authentication
  276.    codes issued to you under your company name, or a company name you
  277.    are authorized to use for this purpose.
  278.  
  279.    The "License for Use and Distribution" section must contain the
  280.    actual text of your license agreement, rather than a pointer to
  281.    some other document, and must include the following statements or
  282.    their equivalent: "The attached VENDINFO data record is hereby
  283.    incorporated by reference.  Any distribution satisfying all the
  284.    distribution requirements expressed in that data record is hereby
  285.    authorized." (This means that distributors will NOT have to consult
  286.    the "License for Use and Distribution" text itself, UNLESS you select
  287.    "See Attached Text for Additional Requirements" in the data record.)

  289. The distributor also needs to be able to use the information you
  290. provide in the VENDINFO record without worrying about violating your
  291. copyright on the descriptions therein.  As a condition of use of
  292. VendEdit, you also agree that every distributor shall have the benefit

  295.    If the distributor satisfies your conditions for distributing the
  296.    product, you authorize the distributor's use of your unaltered
  297.    product descriptive texts without further permission.

  299. Finally, to keep any license disputes strictly between you and the

  303.    and distributor, and do not involve VENDINFO or Rams' Island

  335. the shareware version of this product, and provided they claim no
  336. ownership of these products.
