  14. CATZ II RETAIL CD-ROM
  15. On your Catz II CD, click on the "Install Catz II" 
  16. button, or at the root level of the CD in the 
  17. Catz II directory, double-click the file called 
  18. "Setup.exe" to launch the installer.
  19.  
  20. DOGZ II ADOPTION KIT (Included on Catz II Retail CD-ROM)
  21. On your Catz II CD, click on the "Dogz II Demo" 
  22. button, or at the root level of the CD in the 
  23. Dogz II Demo directory, double-click the file 
  24. called "Setup.exe" to launch the installer.
  25.  
  26. CATZ II ADOPTION KIT (3 floppy disk set)
  27. Insert Disk 1 of the Catz II Adoption Kit.  
  28. Double-click the file called "Setup.exe" to
  29. launch the installer.  Follow the instructions 
  30. to complete your Catz II Adoption Kit installation. 
  31. Note - some of the features described below are 
  32. only in the full retail version of Catz II.  
  33.  
  34. Remember, each Petz II Adoption Kit comes with 
  35. 5 Petz breedz and a limited number of toyz.  You 
  36. can only have one Petz out at a time in the Adoption 
  37. Kits.  When you purchase the full version of Dogz II 
  38. or Catz II, you'll be able to enjoy all the cool new 
  39. features such as having two Petz out at once, (yes, 
  40. Dogz and Catz can play together now), a whole 
  41. collection of fun new toyz, and the ability to download 
  42. new breedz and toyz from our Web site at:  www.petz.com
  43.  
  44. Please note:  When you install a Petz II product, 
  45. Microsoft DirectX is also installed, but will not 
  46. overwrite drivers you already have.  Once Installation 
  47. is complete, restart your computer, then go to the 
  48. folder called PF.Magic on your hard drive, and double-
  49. click the file called "Petz II.exe" to launch and 
  50. begin playing with your new Petz.

  52. 2.  Product Overview
  53. Dogz II and Catz II are the newest releases in 
  54. PF.Magic's best-selling line of Virtual Petz.  These 
  55. products continue PF.Magic's mission to deliver the 
  56. best virtual Petz experience in the world. In Dogz II 
  57. and Catz II no two Petz are alike - every Petz 
  58. looks unique and has a unique personality.  Your 
  59. virtual Petz are now even more intelligent and can 
  60. play and interact with each other!  Also, more breedz 
  61. of Petz and more toyz are available on the Web for 
  62. users to download. 
  63.  
  64. Dogz II and Catz II are sold separately.  When both 
  65. products are installed, Dogz and Catz can play with 
  66. each other and with each other's toyz.
  67.  
  68. There are 3 separate areas in Catz II:
  69.      Playpen - This is the primary area.  Play 
  70. with adopted Petz and toyz here.  (You can also let 
  71. your Petz out of the Playpen into the Fullscreen 
  72. Mode - here you can play with your Petz right on your 
  73. desktop as you work in other applications or windows.)
  74.      Adoption Center - Check out all the 
  75. different breedz and adopt your Petz here.  Also, 
  76. connect directly to the Online Adoption Center to 
  77. see what new breedz are available to download.
  78.      Toybox - Get new toyz and rearrange your Supply 
  79. Shelf here.  Also, connect directly to the Online 
  80. Toy Shop to download new toyz.

  82. Owner's responsibility:  All Catz that you adopt 
  83. require daily attention.  Although you can adopt
  84. as many Catz as you like, you need to care for them 
  85. properly.  If you neglect or abuse your Petz, they 
  86. will run away.  Proper care for your Petz means playing 
  87. with them, feeding them food and water, and giving 
  88. them attention everyday that you launch Catz II.
  89.  
  90. 3.  Key Features in Catz II:
  91.     The most lifelike and warmest Virtual Petz.
  92.     Multiple Character Interaction:
  93.         2 Petz can be out at once and 
  94.         play together  (Catz-Catz, and if
  95.         you also own Dogz II, Dogz-Dogz and

  133.         or a Dogz II Adoption Kit!  In the Adoption 
  134.         Kit, you can play with all 5 Catz or 5 Dogz

  137. 4.  Tips & Fun Stuff
  138.     PETTING:  
  139.         Stroke your Petz with the cursor while 
  140.         holding down the left mouse button to pet 
  141.         them.
  142.     PICK THEM UP: 
  143.         Click and hold down the right mouse button 
  144.         while over a Petz to pick it up and carry it.  
  145.         Let go of the mouse button to drop your Petz.
  146.     TRAIN YOUR PETZ:
  147.         Reward your Catz with a yummy Fish Treat for 
  148.         behavior you like or use the Spray Bottle to 
  149.         teach your Petz what not to do.  
  150.     FEED YOUR PETZ:
  151.         Catz need to be fed food and water daily.
  152.     PLAY WITH THEM:
  153.         There is endless fun to be had with all the 
  154.         toyz provided.
  155.     TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM:
  156.         If you neglect or abuse your Petz, they will 
  157.         run away.  Proper care for your Petz means 
  158.         playing with them, feeding them food and water, 
  159.         and giving them attention every day that you 
  160.         launch Catz II.
  161.     MICE:
  162.         Catz II comes with 2 Mice.  Take the Cheese off 
  163.         the shelf to lure the Mice out of their mouse hole.  
  164.         To get a mouse to go away, pick it up (right 
  165.         mouse-button click on the mouse) and shake it, 
  166.         then let go.  It will shriek and go home.
  167.     GAMES:
  168.         Watch two Catz wrestle with the Yarn Ball.  See 
  169.         if you can get two Catz to play games with each 
  170.         other.  Take out the Cat Dancer and watch your 
  171.         Petz go wild!   
  172.  
  173. 5.  Troubleshooting:
  174. ** I AM GETTING A FILE NOT FOUND ERROR
  175. - Make sure you have virtual memory turned on.  To do 
  176. this, open System in your Control Panels and select the 
  177. Performance tag.  Then, click on the Virtual Memory 
  178. button at the bottom and choose "Let Windows manage my 
  179. virtual memory settings."  
  180. - Also, you need to make sure that the hard disk where 
  181. your virtual memory swap disk is has at least 50 MB free.  
  182. This is generally your C:/ drive.
  183.  
  184. ** I GET AN ERROR INSTALLING PETZ II
  185. - As with all setup programs, you should exit any open 
  186. applications before running setup, including any other 
  187. Petz programs.  Make sure you exit out of ALL open 
  188. applications before installing Petz II.
  189.  
  190. ** I HAVE A PROBLEM RUNNING SCANDISK AND PETZ II
  191. AT THE SAME TIME
  192. Due to the complexity of Petz II, and the large amount 
  193. of unique animation and sound, Petz II will often prevent 
  194. ScanDisk from running to completion.  This is due to 
  195. signifigant amounts of swap activity in Windows virtual
  196. memory.  If you experience trouble, we recommend you 
  197. close Petz II before running ScanDisk.
  198.  
  199. If you run ScanDisk automatically, we suggest using the 
  200. Slideshow Screen Saver.  Slideshow uses minimal system 
  201. resources, and will allow ScanDisk to complete.
  202.  
  203. ** MY MODEM REGISTRATION FAILS
  204. - This is most likely due to an error in your modem setup.  
  205. Try re-hooking up your modem.  You may also have trouble 
  206. registering through LAN modem networks.  An easy solution 
  207. to both of these problems is to print out your Petz II 
  208. Registration card and Mail or Fax it to the address or 
  209. number provided on the printout.  
  210.  
  211. ** I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0 
  212. WHEN MY PETZ ARE IN FULLSCREEN
  213. - There are incompatibilities between Internet Explorer 
  214. 4.0 and Petz II Active Background mode.  To fix this, 
  215. disable Active Background mode by unchecking "Active 
  216. Background Mode On" in the General Options menu under 
  217. your Options Menu item.  You will still be able to go 
  218. to Fullscreen mode, but you will not be able to access 
  219. files underneath your Petz II program.
  220.  
  221. ** ACTIVE BACKGROUND IS NOT WORKING, AND I AM NOT
  222. USING INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0
  223. - If you are experiencing problems in Active Background
  224. Mode, such as not being able to pick up your Petz, you 
  225. may be able to fix this by adding a line to your 
  226. "Autoexec.bat" file.  To do this, go to the root level
  227. of your C:\ drive and find "Autoexec.bat".  Right-click 
  228. on "Autoexec.bat" and select "Edit" from the pull-down 
  229. menu; this will open the file as an editable text file.
  230. Add the following line to the bottom of the file: 
  231.  
  232. Path="The Path to your PetzII.exe file";%PATH%  
  233.  
  234. For example, if you have installed Petz II to its 
  235. default directory, the line would read:  
  236.  
  237. Path="C:\Program Files\PF.Magic\Petz II";%PATH%  
  238.  
  239. Close "Autoexec.bat" and click "Yes" when prompted to 
  240. save these changes.  You will need to restart your 
  241. computer for these changes to take effect.
  242.  
  243. ** I GET WINDOWS POP-UP MENUS WHEN I TRY TO 
  244. CLICK ON THE SUPPLY SHELF
  245. -In Petz II Active Background mode, Diamond InControl 
  246. Tools' left-click or right-click popup menu may appear 
  247. when clicking on the Supply Shelf.  To stop this from 
  248. happening, go to Popup Menus under Display Properties 
  249. and uncheck "Start Menu" under Left Mouse Button Popup 
  250. Menu and/or "Enable Customized Popup Menu" under Right 
  251. Mouse Button Popup Menu. 
  252. -You can also choose to disable Petz II Active Background 
  253. mode if you want to keep your customized InControl Tools' 
  254. mouse options active. To do this, uncheck the "Active 
  255. Background Mode On" option in your Petz II General 
  256. Options menu.  Remember, if you disable the Active 
  257. Background mode, you will no longer be able to work in 
  258. your open windows while Petz II is running.  
  259.  
  260. ** I'VE LOST MY PETZ II SCREEN SAVER PASSWORD
  261. -If you forget your Petz II Screen Saver password while 
  262. in the Screen Saver, you will need to restart your 
  263. computer and enter a new password in your Display 
  264. Properties/Screen Saver dialog. You can do this by 
  265. launching Petz II, choosing "Screen Saver Options" from 
  266. the Options menu and clicking on the Change button next 
  267. to the "Password protected" option box.  Type in and 
  268. confirm your new password and then click "Ok" to save 
  269. your new password.
  270.  
  271. ** MY SCREEN SAVER IS SET TO PETZ II EVEN THOUGH 
  272. I DIDN'T CHOOSE IT IN THE DISPLAY PROPERTIES
  273. -Selecting "Screen Saver Options" from the Petz II 
  274. Options menu automatically switches any previously-
  275. enabled non-Petz screen saver to the Petz II screen 
  276. saver.  You will need to go back into your Screen 
  277. Saver properties to choose a different screen saver.
  278.  
  279. ** I'M EXPERIENCING STRANGE BEHAVIOR WITH MY 
  280. PETZ OR THEIR TOYZ 
  281. -Do not worry - your Petz probably just need a rest.  
  282. Simply close the application re-launch it.  That is 
  283. likely to cure many of the problems you may have.
  284. -You can first try resetting your PF.Magic registry by 
  285. holding down the Control key, Shift key and Home key at 
  286. the same time that you launch Petz.  You will get a 
  287. dialog asking if you want to reset the registry.  Click 
  288. OK and your program will launch.                                      
  289. -If Petz II continues to act up, you may want to try 
  290. reinstalling your Petz II program.  To do this, first 
  291. uninstall Petz II by opening the Add/Remove Programs 
  292. Properties in your Control Panel at the root level of 
  293. My Computer or under Settings in the Start Menu.  In 
  294. the Install/Uninstall menu, select Petz II from the 
  295. list and click on the "Add/Remove..." button.  Choose 
  296. "Yes" in the "Confirm File Deletion" dialog.  NOTE:  
  297. Uninstalling Petz II will NOT delete your Adopted 
  298. Petz.  They will be waiting for you in their Playpen 
  299. after you reinstall.  Reinstall Petz II by launching 
  300. "Setup.exe" from your Petz II CD-ROM.
  301.  
  302. ** NO SOUNDS ARE HEARD, OR THE SOUND IS NOT 
  303. PLAYING PROPERLY
  304. -Make sure the "Play Sound Effects" option is checked 
  305. in the "General Options" menu and that you don't have 
  306. "Play Sound Effects Only if Front Window" selected.  
  307. If you're not hearing sounds in the Screen Saver, you 
  308. may not have the "Petz II Sound Effects" option selected 
  309. in your "Screen Saver Options" menu. 
  310. -Petz will not make sounds when the Playpen is minimized 
  311. (this is a quick way to quiet your Petz down!).  Make 
  312. sure the Playpen is open on the screen or that you are 
  313. in Fullscreen mode.
  314. -You may have a problem with your DirectX sound drivers.  
  315. Try reinstalling Petz II.  If this does not work, we 
  316. suggest you try getting the most recent DirectX sound 
  317. drivers directly from Microsoft by downloading it off 
  318. their web site at:  www.microsoft.com/directx/default.asp  
  319.  
  320. ** MY OTHER APPLICATIONS GET NO SOUND WHEN PETZ II
  321. IS RUNNING; EVEN WHEN PETZ II SOUND IS TURNED OFF
  322. -Sorry, Petz II needs to initialize the sound channel when 
  323. launched, whether or not you have sounds on.  This means 
  324. that Petz II needs to have constant access to the sound 
  325. channel, therefore not allowing other applications to 
  326. play sound.  You will still be able to play CD's in your 
  327. CD-Rom drive, though.  Quit Petz II in order to hear
  328. sounds in other applications.
  329.  
  330. ** I GET A CRASH TRYING TO RUN PETZ II WITH 
  331. ANOTHER APPLICATION
  332. - Many older programs cannot run with newer programs 
  333. that use Microsoft's DirectX.  Since Petz II uses 
  334. DirectX's sound drivers, you may not be able to run 
  335. Petz II at the same time as some of these older programs.
  336.  
  337. ** THE GENERAL OPTIONS PULL-DOWN MENU TAKES 
  338. A LONG TIME TO APPEAR
  339. -If you had a network connection but no longer do, and 
  340. have a link to the network in your Startup folder, you 
  341. will experience long pauses in the Petz II program when 
  342. you open the General Options Menu.  To fix this, either 
  343. reconnect to the network, or delete your network link 
  344. in "Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup." 
  345.  
  346. ** I CANNOT "IMPORT" PETZ FROM A FOLDER THAT 
  347. MY FRIEND COPIED FOR ME
  348. -The import feature is only for importing Petz from 
  349. Dogz I or Catz I.  It is not for bringing in Petz from
  350. Petz II that friends copied for you or that you 
  351. downloaded off of the internet.  In these cases, you 
  352. need to copy your new Petz file into your "Adopted Petz" 
  353. folder.
  354.  
  355. ** I CAN'T STOP PLAYING WITH PETZ II
  356. -That's OK.  Just be sure to play with all of the Petz
  357. you have adopted equally, so that none feel left out.
  358.  
  359. ** MY NON-VIRTUAL DOGS AND/OR CATS ARE GETTING JEALOUS 
  360. WHEN I PLAY WITH PETZ II
  361. -Don't forget to give your other pets love and affection,
  362. food and water, and all the care that they need.  We know
  363. that your other pets may also want to join in the fun
  364. with Petz II, but we haven't gotten there yet.
