- FBI searches for software 'pirates'
-
- [cyber.strike] January 28, 1997
- Web posted at: 8:36 p.m. EST (0136 GMT)
-
- SAN FRANCISCO (Reuter) -- The FBI said it carried out searches from coast to
- coast Tuesday as part of an undercover investigation, code-named "Cyber
- Strike," into software piracy through computer networks.
-
- The searches follow an eight-month undercover investigation of illegal
- duplication and distribution of computer software, a $1 billion-a-year crime,
- the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
-
- The probe focused on groups that allegedly pass copyrighted software through
- the Internet, the global computer network, or through private computer
- bulletin board services, the FBI said.
-
- It said the searches were aimed at "identifying and disrupting" the most
- flagrant bulletin board service operators.
-
- Agents were interviewing people or searching homes and businesses in Atlanta;
- Columbus, Ohio; Miami; Oklahoma City; Des Moines, Iowa; Pittsburgh; and San
- Leandro and Cedar Ridge in California.
-
- [cyber.strike]
-
- The search warrants allege violations of U.S. laws against copyright
- infringement and authorize agents to seize computer hardware, documents and
- records, the FBI said.
-
- FBI spokesman George Grotz said he did not expect any arrests to be made
- Tuesday. The FBI said the investigation, led by the bureau's San
- Francisco-based International Computer Crime Squad, was continuing and more
- searches were expected.
-
- Bob Kruger, vice president of the Business Software Alliance, a group of
- leading software publishers, praised the FBI.
-
- "'Cyber Strike' comes at the right time, as the popularity of the Internet
- has increasingly provided an electronic haven for software pirates," Kruger
- said in a statement. "'Cyber Strike' represents the most ambitious law
- enforcement action to date against Internet piracy."
-
- The FBI said it was investigating groups which allegedly had banded together
- to pass commercial software through computer bulletin board services,
- Internet file transfer protocol sites and Internet relay chat channels.
-
- [cyber.strike]
-
- Bulletin board services are privately owned networks that often are run out
- of people's homes. They allow users to log on to a central computer through a
- telephone line and a modem.
-
- File transfer protocol sites are libraries of documents or software, and
- Internet relay chat channels are forums where computer users discuss
- different topics.
-
- The FBI said programs being pirated in this way included some of the most
- popular software programs such as utilities, graphics, netware, operating
- systems and games.
