- You dial up a local phone number to connect with various online systems in
- the electronic universe. The local number is part of a network that uses a
- technique called "packet switching" to route your call to its destination.
- Virtually all commercial systems are accessible via one or more packet-
- switching networks. The two leaders in the field are U.S. Sprint's (GTE
- and Sprint) Telenet and McDonnell Douglas Tymnet. Many Canadian users first
- connect with Datapac, which then gates them through to one of these two
- American-based systems. Most people don't know it but these networks will
- provide you with free online information-if you know what command to enter.
- [-- Note: Cmd for Tymnet Help from Data Pac 13106003295 --]
- Both can be used to search for the network phone numbers operating in a
- particular area. Similar information is available on Canadian cities via
- Datapac.
- This service can be especially valuable if you plan to be taking a computer
- with you on a trip. But it can also save you money. Many commercial systems
- off a similar feature that provides the identical information. The difference
- is that on a commercial system you must pay for it.
- Though the specific commands you enter are different for each network,
- the steps you should follow are essentially the same. First, call the toll-
- free customer service number we've rpvoded and ask for the network nearest
- your location. Since some network numbers can handle different speeds, tell
- the customer service representative whether you will be communicating at
- 300,1200, or 2400 bits per second or "baud". Then dial the phone and follow
- the steps outlined below. If you have any problems using these free
- information services, contact customer service for the latest instructions.

-
- Note that you can call the free dataline shown above from anywhere in the
- continental United States. Set your system to seven data bits, even parity,
- and one stop bit, and hit three carriage returns once you are connected.
- Then follow the instruction given below. Alternatively, you can phone
- customer service and request the number of your local Telenet node.
- When you dial Telenet, and see that your modem has locked onto the tone
- the node sends, hit your <Enter> key twice to let Telenet sense and match
- itself to your communications settings. The network herald announcing that
- your using Telenet will then appear. Key in D1 when prompted by your
- terminal identifier. (This is the identifier that applies to virtually every
- personal computer.) When the "at" sign (@) appears, key in MAIL. Then type
- PHONES when prompted for a user name and PHONES again for your password.
- (The password PHONES will not show on your screen.)
- The term "TCO" mentioned in the listings you will then see stands for
- "Telenet Central Office." As with a phone company's central office (those
- windowless block houses you see in some parts of the country), this is
- a switching station and network node. Just think of it as your local
- Telenet phone number. Telenet also provides service in over 50 countries.
- For information on accessing this part of its service, key in
- INTL/ASSOCIATES at the "User Name?" prompt then enter INTL at the "Password?"
- prompt.
- [[-- Note: If you live outside the United States, follow the local access
- procedures established by your PTT to connect to 311020200141

- There is also plenty of information available on the Canadian Datapac
- network. For information (in English) about Datapac public dial-up telephone
- numbers and locations, enter the following network address at the Datapac
- prompt sign: C 03020 921 00086. This number works from the U.S. as well, so
- you may want to give it a try when using Telenet. Here's part of what you can
- see if you dial Telenet and enter the above number at the @ prompt.

-
- [[-- Notes......
-
- Isn't tymnet wonderful to have such basic help file accounts to which you
- can learn a lot of valuable information from.. Well this isn't a lesson in
- totally breaking into tymnet.. this is just to teach you about the system
- thus as always you must take the information you learn here and on the system
- and use to your advantage... that will show right away wether or not you have
- what it takes to make it as a hacker... ps... heres something interesting
- for ya!
-
- On Jule 31, 1989, McDonnell Douglas Corporation announced that it had
- "reached a preliminary agreement to sell its Network Systems Business which
- includes the Tymnet public data netowrk, to British Telecom for $355
- million." At this writing the acquisition is conditional, pending regulatory
- clearances.
- More than likely the sale will have no affect on onine communicators.
- However, it may be that some of the addresses and customer service numbers
- given here will change.
