  9. SIDING SPRINGS ASTRONOMER SEES UFO!
  10. Further to my report on other Coonabarabran sightings, the Sydney Morning
  11. Herald of January 11, 1995 ran an article featuring a UFO sighting by Dr. 
  12. John Dawe, the manager of the Sidings Spring Observatory, near Coonabarabran.  Dr.
  13. Dawe is an internationally respected astronomer.
  14. The article states that many months ago he was driving back from Sydney with
  15. his wife and daughter.
  16. "We were going up a hill near Merriwa, at the top of the Hunter, when I
  17. happened to look up at the sky.  There was a uniform, grey cloud cover, but
  18. suddenly something seemed to detach itself, hover for a while, then fall
  19. vertically very quickly below the brow of the hill.  I yelled an expletive,
  20. which made everyone take notice.  My wife saw the same thing, but by the 
  21. time we got to the top we couldn't see anything.
  22. "My tentative explanation was that it was a weather balloon.  But it was 
  23. grey, rather than silver, and was elliptical horizontally, not vertically."
  24. Dr. Dawe was quoted as saying it was "classic stuff."
  25. "It was something I still cannot explain.  But I am 99.99 per cent certain 
  26. it was nothing alien."
  27. In light of my Coonabarabran area investigations (the article mentions the
  28. Mendooran road incident, but only in the context of the local papers story) 
  29. I rang the observatory.  I have not yet been able to speak with Dr. Dawe, 
  30. but an associate there indicated that Dr. Dawe was rather embarrassed by 
  31. the story and how it has been blown up.
  32. The rest of the article refers to other strange goings on including yowies 
  33. (or local variants such as "Hairy Mary" or "the Pilliga Princess") and other
  34. UFO sightings.
  35. I've left messages with the journalist to follow up further.
