  8. ²Remember  all  the  hoopla surrounding
  9. the  release  of STARFOX for the Super
  10. Nintendo?   It  didn't  look  all that
  11. impressive   to  me.   Yet,  to  those
  12. people  that  have never seen an Amiga
  13. in  action, it was impressive.  I knew
  14. the  Amiga  could  handle  a game like
  15. that  with  no  problem (and since the
  16. CD32 is also an Amiga, I knew it could
  17. handle it as well.)
  18.  
  19. GUARDIAN  isn't  exactly like STARFOX.
  20. It's more of a 3D version of DEFENDER,
  21. the  old  arcade  game that put you in
  22. charge  of  destroying  aliens  before
  23. they  could steal humans from the face
  24. of the planet.
  25.  
  26. If  you've  never seen STARFOX, it's a
  27. 3D  polygon based flight game in which
  28. you  witness  everything from slightly
  29. behind the on-screen representation of
  30. your  ship.   GUARDIAN  has  a similar
  31. type of setup, but allows more freedom
  32. in  where  you can fly and also allows
  33. you  to  change your view to be pretty
  34. much wherever you want it to be.

  36. Numerous  enemies come after you in an
  37. attempt  to  snuff  you  out.   A very
  38. confusing    control    system   (that
  39. involves  all  four  action buttons on
  40. the  CD32 controller) makes it hard to
  41. concentrate on what you're doing while
  42. you should be doing it.  I spent a lot
  43. of  time flying around in circles just
  44. shooting   blindly   hoping   to   hit
  45. something  until  I  thinned  out  the
  46. ¶²enemy enough to use the onscreen radar
  47. to  single  out opponents and go after
  48. them.

  50. It's  a shame that the game is so hard
  51. to  control,  because  it looks fairly
  52. impressive  at  first  glance.   After
  53. playing  if  for  awhile, it's another
  54. frustrating   and  disappointing  CD32
  55. game   that  doesn't  do  the  machine
  56. justice.   The controls do not need to
  57. be   so  confusing  and  the  graphics
  58. appear to be more than the machine can
  59. keep  up  with  when a lot is going on
  60. (which is most of the time.)

  62. It's  obvious  that  a lot of work has
  63. gone  into  the  game.   The designers
  64. even  went  so  far  as  to  include a
  65. preferences  option that allows you to
  66. move  the screen position to allow the
  67. normally  PAL  mode  game to fit on an
  68. NTSC  screen.  That's a feature I wish
  69. more CD32 games had.

  71. If you've been searching for something
  72. a  little different, you might want to
  73. try GUARDIAN.  It's limitations aren't
  74. severe,   just  frustrating.   With  a
  75. proper amount of patience, it might be
  76. possible to salvage some fun from this
  77. disc.
