-
- PrepZip is a utility that serves the following functions for anyone
- that processes multiple "ARCHIVED" files on a regular basis. PrepZip
- will perform the following functions on any LZH,ARC,PAK,SDN,ARJ,
- ZOO or ZIP archive.
-
- 1. Checks all files extracted form the original "ARCHIVE" for Virus's
- with SCAN.EXE from McAfee associates.
-
- 2. Creates a new "ARCHIVE" from the files contained within the
- original "ARCHIVE". The newly created archive does not have
- to be the same format as the original. You can convert to ZIP,
- ARC,ARJ,LZH,ZOO,or PAK.
-
- 3. If converting to ZIP or ARJ format you may optionally add a personal
- comment to the newly created archive. (Registered Version Only)
-
- 4. Optionally update GT Power's FILES.BBS description file. PrepZip
- will work with any version of GT Power ie 15.00 or 16.00 version
- FILES.BBS format.
-
- 5. Move a file and its description to another directory.
-
- 6. Optionally remove unwanted files from Archives.
-
- ┌─────────────┐
- │ Intro │
- └─────────────┘
-
- PrepZip was designed to aid primarily Sysops, or anyone else that
- processes multiple "archive" formats, to easily check files for
- virus's, recompress the files with the archiver of your choice and
- optionally apply a "Archive Comment" (if converting to ZIP format).
-
- PrepZip should be able to detect almost any kind of errors that
- could occur, short of disk errors, memory errors, or power failure.
- Prepzip will create a work directory on the configured "Work Disk"
- named PZ_WRK_1. If you already have a directory named this on your
- "Work Disk" all files will be deleted from it automatically, and the
- directory will be removed at the end of execution. Please verify that
- you do not have a directory by this name (if you want to keep it's
- contents).
-
-
- ┌─────────────┐
- │Configuration│
- └─────────────┘
-
- The first time that PrepZip is run, or at anytime that the
- configuration cannot be found, PrepZip will automatically enter
- configuration mode. To manually put PrepZip into config mode
- enter PREPZIP CONFIG on the command line. PrepZip's configuration
- consists of a two page menu driven listing of options. Page 1
- looks like the following......
-

- ╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- All configurations shown in this document represent PrepZip's
- DEFAULT CONFIGURATION. Now for a discussion of each of these
- options........
-
- 1. Registered Name: This is the name that you will used for Registration
- when you Register Prepzip. Without a valid CRC this
- field will remain UNREGISTERED. See the Registration
- section of this document for Registration
- Instructions.
-
- 2. Registered CRC : You will receive a Registration CRC to unlock all of
- PrepZip's features and eliminate all those annoying
- delays when you send in your Registration Form. The
- CRC is used in conjunction with the Registered Name
- option. See the Registration section of this
- document for Registration Instructions.
-
- 3. Work Disk: This is the letter of the Drive on which you wish
- PrepZip to create it's work directory. PrepZip will
- create a directory named PZ_WRK_1 off the root
- directory of the selected disk. It is advised that
- this disk be either a Hard Disk or a Ram Disk due to
- slow access speeds of floppy disks. You should also
- select a disk with plenty of free space. DO NOT
- SELECT A DISK WITH A DIRECTORY NAMED 'PZ_WRK_1'. ALL
- FILES IN THE DIRECTORY WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DELETED
- AND THE DIRECTORY REMOVED AFTER EVERY EXECUTION!
-
- 4. FILES.BBS Style: This option pertains to the FILES.BBS file as used by
- the GT Power HOST. FILES.BBS is a description file
- for files in a particular file download area. Since
- there are two styles (depending on the version of GT)
- of FILES.BBS listings, the style must be specified
- here.
- When this option is selected you will have the three
- choices from a 'mini menu'. This 'mini menu' will
- look like this......
-
- Please Select your FILES.BBS Style
- 1. NO UPDATING 2. Single Date, Single Line Description
- 3. Dual Date, Multiple Line Descriptions
-
- ─
- [ ]
-
- Selecting '1' will force PrepZip to NEVER update a
- FILES.BBS listing. If you never wish to create or
- update this listing then please select '1'.
-
- Selecting '2' will force PrepZip to use the GT Power
- Files.BBS format used in all versions prior to 15.50
- whenever updating or creating is selected from the
- command line. This is known as Single Date/Desc.
- The format is as follows......
-
- Filename Size ARC Description
- In K Date (One Line Max)
- ──────── ────── ──────── ────────────────────────────────────────────────
- TEST.ZIP 2 7-07-91 Description Goes Here (1 Line Maximum)
-
-
- Selecting '3' will force PrepZip to use the GT Power
- Files.BBS format used in all versions 15.50 and above
- whenever updating or creating is selected from the
- command line. This is known as Multi Date/Desc.
- The format is as follows......
-
-
- FileName Actual Size ARC Internal Description
- Date Date (Multi Line)
- ────────── ─────────── ───────── ───────── ───────────────────────────────
- TEST.ZIP 1718 7-07-91 6-23-91 The Description Goes Here,
- |Multiple lines may be used for the description.
-
-
- 5. Screen Writes: This option will force PrepZip to use Direct screen
- writing (directly to video ram), or use Bios Writes.
- If you plan on using PrepZip remotely over a modem
- link you MUST have this option to BIOS. Why a
- choice? Direct screen writing is MUCH faster and
- more efficient.
-
- 6. Default Options: This option will allow you to select those command
- line options that you ALWAYS use on the command line.
- This option will allow you to avoid some typing on
- the command line each time you wish to run PrepZip.
- PrepZip will not recognize all of it's possible
- parameters from this option however. The available
- options for the default are /Q /R /U /C. See the
- Command Line Option section for more details on
- these options.
-
- 7. Rearchive Type : What kind of Archive do you want to convert to? You
- have 6 options. You may create a ZIP,LZH,ARC,ARJ
- ZOO,or PAK archive. These archiver pathnames are
- configured under page 2 of the configuration. For
- details see below.....
-
-
-
-
- 8. Comment File: This is a plain ASCII file limited to 80 characters in
- width. This file can contain information about your
- BBS or anything you would like to put into it. This
- option will only work if you are creating a ZIP or ARJ
- archive. PKZIP or ARJ are the only archivers that will
- comment with this method. Anytime anyone UNZIPS or
- UNARJs the file you create, this comment will be displayed
- to them. As an example, here is the Comment file that is
- attached to all zip files processed here......

-
- You are more than welcome to modify this comment file to
- suit your needs.
-
- If you do not wish to add a comment to your files, simply
- enter NONE into the configuration of your Comment File.
-
-
- 9. Error Log: Just what it says. The full path and name of the file
- you want prepzip to log errors to. If you want a file
- called PREPZIP.ERR in the root directory of C: just enter
- C:\PREPZIP.ERR.
- Once again if you do not want ot have a Error Log simply
- enter NONE into the configuration of your Error Log.
-
-
- A. Unwanted List: This is a new option. You can now create a text file
- that contains a listing of filenames that you would
- like removed from Archives. Following is an example...
- C:\>TYPE DEL_LIST.TXT
- READ-ME.TXT
- BBD-ADD.TXT
- CALL_US.NOW
- README.*
- COME_C.US
-
- C:\>
-
- Notice that each file is on a separate line and STARTS
- IN COLUMN ONE. This is very important! Also notice
- the filename README.*, yes PrepZip WILL delete all
- occurrences of README with ANY extension. Please be
- careful with this file. If you place *.* on a line by
- itself, PrepZip will delete EVERY file out of the
- archive, no questions asked. You have the capability
- of deleting any files that you want, but at the same
- time you have the capability of deleting files that you
- DON'T want deleted. Use with caution.
-
- S)ave and Exit: This one is easy. If you hit 'S' PrepZip saves your
- changes and exits immediately.
-
-
- [ESC] to abort changes: If you decide not to save your changes hit ESC
-
-
- D)OS Shell: Forget the name of something? Shell out of you
- configuration and find what you need. Typing EXIT
- from the DOS prompt will return you to PrepZip.
-
- PgDn Screen 2: As stated previously PrepZip has a two page
- configuration. Pressing the PAGE DOWN key takes you to
- configuration page 2. Now for that discussion.
-

-
- The third and final screen of PrepZip's configuration allows for
- complete configuration of your Virus Scanner/Locator. You can now
- configure PrepZip to use most ANY virus scanner, rather than just
- using SCAN.EXE from McAfee Associates. SCAN.EXE is still the
- default however. Now lets discuss the options you have, and the
- defaults provided.
-
- 1. Virus Scanner: This is simply the full path and name of your virus
- scanner. Full Pathnames are not necessary if it is
- in your DOS Path. The default is SCAN.EXE (McAfee).
-
- 2. Initial Run Opts: These are the command line parameters to pass to your
- Virus Scanner on the FIRST execution. These options
- will be passed ONLY on the first execution. The
- default settings tell SCAN.EXE to scan ALL FILES AND
- DO A MEMORY CHECK. The Memory Scan may be removed
- by placing a /NOMEM here.
-
- 3. Sequential Opts: These are the command line parameters to pass to your
- Virus Scanner on SEQUENTIAL executions. These options
- will be passed on every execution EXCEPT the first one.
- The default settings tell SCAN.EXE to scan ALL FILES
- WITH NO MEMORY CHECK. The memory scan may be added
- by removing the /NOMEM here.
-
- Virus Scanner Errorlevels are errorlevels that your virus scanner
- returns under three different situations. The default is SCAN.EXE
- errorlevel exits. Please consult your Virus Scanner Documentation
- for more info on errorlevel exits.
-
- 4. Normal Exit: This is the errorlevel that your virus scanner exits
- with if NO VIRUS is found and nothing abnormal occurs.
- SCAN.EXE exits Errorlevel 0 if everything is OK.
-
- 5. Virus Detected: This is most likely the MOST IMPORTANT errorlevel
- of all. This is what your virus scanner exits with
- if a VIRUS IS DETECTED! SCAN.EXE will exit Errorlevel
- 1 anytime a virus is detected.
-
- 6. Abnormal Exit: This is an errorlevel that is passed if something
- abnormal happens, ie. Disk Errors, Memory Errors, etc.
- This errorlevel should not indicate a virus, just a
- problem. SCAN.EXE will exit Errorlevel 2 under
- problem circumstances.
-
-
- ┌─────────────┐
- │ Options │
- └─────────────┘
-
- Prepzip currently recognized the following command line options:
-
- CONFIG - See Configuration section section of this document.
-
- /Q - Quiet Mode, If an error occurs, the error display
- and accompanying 10 second timer will not be displayed.
- The Error Log will be updated with the error. This
- option is useful for batch file usage.
-
- /R - Rearchive Only. When this option is specified PrepZIp
- will work as a Rearchiver ONLY and WILL NOT scan for
- virus.
-
- /O - Override the DEFAULT COMMAND LINE configuration. This
- option will effectively cause PrepZip to ignore the
- settings in the configuration for DEFAULT OPTIONS.
-
- /C - Update/Create FILES.BBS in the same directory as the
- files currently being processed. The /C Parameter
- will create the Files.BBS listing if it does not
- currently exist. Otherwise the listing will simply be
- updated. All updates will be in the style specified
- under FILES.BBS Style in the configuration. See the
- configuration section for further discussions on the
- different styles.
-
- /U - Update FILES.BBS in the same directory as the file
- currently being processed. The /U Parameter will
- update this file in the style configured for FILES.BBS
- style. See the configuration section for further
- discussions on these styles. /U WILL NOT create a
- FILES.BBS listing if it does not already exist. See /C
- for creation of FILES.BBS.
-
- /D - Force DIRECT screen writing, no matter what is
- configured. See the discussion concerning Direct and
- Bios screen writing under the configuration section.
-
- /B - Force BIOS screen writing, no matter what is
- configured. See the discussion concerning Direct and
- Bios screen writing under the configuration section.
-
- /I - Ignore The Remove List. When this option is specified
- PrepZip will NOT delete the files specified in the
- "Remove List".
-
- /T:<dir> - Transfer Archive to Another Directory. The Transfer
- option will move the archive to any directory specified
- by <DIR>. This option will not attempt to update the
- FILES.BBS no matter what is in the configuration. Used
- for moving ONLY. ie PREPZIP /T:C:\NEWFILES
-
- /M:<dir> - Update FILES.BBS then Move the Archive AND Description
- to the directory specified by <DIR>. If the Files.BBS
- style is set to NO UPDATE the /M: will work exactly like
- the /T: option. If Descriptions are moved, the
- description from the original FILES.BBS will be removed
- and the FILES.BBS in the new directory will have the
- description line appended to it.
-
-
-
- ┌─────────────┐
- │ Errorlevels │
- └─────────────┘
-
- Prepzip will exit with the following errorlevels if something
- happens during execution. These could be useful for batch file
- operation:
-
- Errorlevel 0: Everything seems to have worked perfectly.
- All the archives were successfully Opened
- Scanned, Rezipped, and commented (if you
- configured a comment file).
- Errorlevel 1: Some sort of a virus was found. The
- archive(s) containing virus's have been
- renamed to VIRUS1,VIRUS2,VIRUS3, etc.
- respectively. See the ERROR LOG for more
- details on original filenames etc.....
- Errorlevel 2: Some of the Archives were unsuccessfully
- processed. Several instances can cause
- this errorlevel to be set. Duplicate
- file names, archiver or dearchiver not
- in the DOS path, Password Encrypted
- archive, etc. See the ERROR LOG for more
- details on errorlevel 2.
- Errorlevel 3: Insufficient parameters were given on the
- command line. You must enter a filename
- to process or CONFIG.
- Errorlevel 4: Unable to create Word Directory. Most
- likely cause is a full disk.
