  9.   Viruses use a variety of methods to spread their infection. The
  10.   majority go 'memory resident' when their host program has been
  11.   loaded and then, from there, seek to infect other programs (or
  12.   boot sectors) that they can come into contact with.
  13.  
  14.   Some viruses can infect when a file is opened and the quickest way
  15.   to spread these viruses is through the use of a virus detection
  16.   program which opens all files as it scans them looking for viruses!
  17.   For this reason, virus scanners should ideally be run from a system
  18.   that has been rebooted from an uninfected diskette.

  20.   Some viruses can also infect files that are being copied, both the
  21.   source and the target files.

  23.   Also some viruses can infect simply through use of the DIR
  24.   command.
